BIOGRAPHY: A great granddaughter, possibly Mary Attie Austin Anderson, of Nathaniel Austin, who grew up very near his farm, stated: I can remember Aunt Betsy very well and recall her telling many times how her father came driving four white horses to bring his family down the mountain side through "Natty's Pass" into a large cane break on Lost Creek, and there building a small log house, and later the two story log house.

A story told by Mary Attie Austin Anderson, handed down by her mother, was that Nathaniel Austin had three slaves, Abram and Rachael, who were man and wife, and Gates. One morning at breakfast, Abram was over in the corner of the kitchen mumbling; and Nathaniel asked what was the matter. Rachael replied that Abram was wanting another biscuit. When asked how many biscuits he had already eaten, Abram replied, "Just twelve." Nathaniel said, "Give Abram another biscuit!"

The Austins went back to North Carolina to visit relatives, and while gone, the house was accidentally set afire by some of the children [Uncle "somebody" asleep upstairs, upon being awakened and told of the fire, replied sleepily, "Just let her burn", and went back to sleep. He was reported to be kind of 'droll'.] The fire was extinguished, but the family never left home again!

MILITARY: Served in Capt. Tatton's (or Raton) Company.

BIBLE: The original Bible is in the possession of Col. Jimmie L. Akin (Ret.) of Denver, CO. A copy of the information was furnished by Col. Akin for his cousin, Flora Lillie Mae Farmer Mines, of Chattanooga, Hamilton, TN. Mrs. Mines is the daughter of Mary Annie Akin Farmer whose mother was Flora Elizabeth Austin Akin. Flora Elizabeth Austin's parents were Pleasant Austin and Mary Elizabeth Warren Austin, of Sparta, White Co., TN. The original Bible was damaged by water and smoke.

    (3) A household headed by Nathaniel AUSTIN is listed in the 1820 census of White County, TN.

Listed in Nathaniel's household are 2 free white males under 10 years of age; 2 free white males between 10 and 16 years of age; 1 free white male between 26 and 45 years of age; 3 free white females under 10 years of age; 1 free white female between 10 and 16 years of age; and 1 free white females between 26 and 45 years of age.

Assuming that Nathaniel is the free white male listed in the 1820 census as then being 26 and 45 years of age, he would have been born between 1775 and 1794, according to the 1820 census.

Assuming that the other persons in Nathaniel's household are children of Nathaniel and/or his wife, those children would have consisted of 4 sons (2 of which sons would have been born between 1810 and 1820, and 2 of which sons would have been born between 1804 and 1810, according to the 1820 census) and 4 daughters (3 of which daughters would have been born between 1810 and 1820, and 1 of which sons would have been born between 1804 and 1810, according to the 1820 census).
