    HiAll,

In digging around this evening (no pun intended) I found an Isaac Barnes
buried in the Barnes Cemetery at Irving College. He was listed as a member
of the 2nd D Co 35th Tenn Infantry.

In my files I have an Isaac Barnes who is the son of Charles Barnes (b. 1
Apr 1809) and Susannah Smith. This Charles sister was the brother of my GG
Grandmother, Mary (Polly) Barnes m. Samuel Worthington. I understand that
Charles and Mary's father William was killed in a powder mill explosion at
Irving College in 1819 and it really does seem like too much of a
    coincidence.

By chance, can someone tell me if these are the same person?

    Dear Wanda,

While not a Barnes researcher per se, several of my direct lines and Barnes lines intermarried.

This is the information that I have compiled from several different Barnes cousins.

    Generation 1

John Barn b. 1661 in Surrey, England + Katherene O'Stoner. They had two children known to me to be

William Barn and Thomas Barn b. 1695 in Surrey, England. I have no further information on Thomas.

    Generation 2

    Thomas Barn, above
William Barn b. ca 1695 in Surrey, England + Dorothy Hansard. I list 4 children for them:

    Leonard b. 1709;
    Thomas b. 1711;
    Richard b. 1719 and
John Barnes, Sr., who changed his name to Barnes b. 1712 in Essex, England.

    Generation 3

John Barnes, Sr. b. 1712 in Essex, England who married 1737 in Plymouth, Massachusetts to Mary Plummer. They had 5 children known to me.

    Lydia b. 1750,
    John Barnes, Jr. b. 1751,
Thomas Barnes b. 1756 in Lincoln, NC [more later],
    Hanner Barnes b. 1757, and
    Mary b. 1760.

    Generation 4

Thomas Barnes b. 1756 in Lincoln, NC who married Margaret St. Jermyn.

They had one child known to me who is William B. Barnes.

    Generation 5

William B. Barnes b. 1780 in Edgecomb, NC, d. 1819 in Warren Co., TN. These are my notes for William: William B. Barnes born 1790 and died 1819 at Irving College in Warren County from burns in a powder mill explosion. He was one of the first to be buried at Shellsford Baptist Church (unmarked grave).

He was married to Charity Philips. Children: Thomas, Mary, Sara, Charles, William, Jesse, Millery, and Eliza.

More on William: From the William and Mary Quarterly (possible parents for William): June 28, 1785. --- Wm. Barnes & Mary, his wife, of Parish of Blissland, New Kent, to Wm. Place, of St. Paul's, Hanover, on Black Creek, Littleberry Wade's, & Turner Slaughter.

Settler: 3 Aug 1812, Collins River Valley, Warren, TN

Probably buried at the Shellsford Baptist Church. * The cemetery is located in Warren Co., TN SE of McMinnville in the Shellsford community on State Road
    127.

    Gen. 5 continued:

William B. Barnes married Charity Phillips b. 24 Aug 1783 in Georgia and died 8 May 1871 in Warren Co., TN. She is probably buried in an unmarked grave in Shellsford Cemetery with her husband. These are my notes for Charity Phillips: BARNES, PHILLIPS

posted by Sandi McDonnell on Sunday, May 30, 1999

Charity PHILLIPS was born 24 August 1783 in Georgia. She married William B. BARNES in Warren Co., KY 7 Jul 1800. By 1806, they were in Warren Co., TN along with William and Sarah PHILLIPS, Charity's aunt and uncle. (William and Sara's daughters were Elizabeth, Charity and Millery)

This Phillips family is related to Joel and Elizabeth Phillips of Wilkes Co., GA, and traces its roots back to the Phillips family of Richmond Co., VA. I am searching for Charity (b. 1787 d. 1871) Phillips's parents.

Charity Phillips and William B. Barnes had 8 children known to me:

    Generation 6

    1. Thomas Barnes (1800-1881) + Hannah Martin (1803-1889), d/o James Martin
    b. 1774 in North Carolina and d. in Kentucky and Ellender Yokum b. 1778 in
Kentucky. I have more information on this Martin and Yokum line should you
    be interested.

    2. Mary "Polly" Barnes (1805-1866) + Samuel Worthington. You probably have
much more info here that will undoubtedly be more accurate than mine.

    3. Sarah "Sack" Barnes (ca 1807 TN/1860 Arkansas) + John Barnes with 8
    children.

    4. Charles Barnes (1809-1864) + Susannah Smith (1812-1896) d/o Isaac Smith
and Brittania Savage. This couple is the parents of the Lt. Isaac Barnes who
married Susannah Elinor Hill d/o Irving/Ervin Hill and Eleanor Morgan that
you mentioned in you e-mail. I list 13 children for Lt. Isaac Barnes and
    Susannah Elinor Hill.

    5. William P. Barnes (1812-1882) + Margaret Hill, possibly related to
    Susannah above.

    6. Jesse Barnes (1813-1887) + 1) Selinda Fields, 2) STB White, 3) Bessie
    Campbell, and 4) STB Burger.

    7. Mildred "Millery" Barnes (1816-1863) + Henderson Safley

    8. Elizabeth "Eliza" Barnes (1819-1889) + Thomas S. Myers.

Again, this information has been shared with me by several Barnes cousins and
is not my original research. It might, however, be a good starting point for
    further research.

    Sincerely,

    Sue Tiffany

Thomas married Margaret St. Jermyn. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 9.  Margaret St. Jermyn
    Children:
    1. 4. William B. Barnes was born in 0___ 1780 in Edgecombe County, North Carolina; died in 0___ 1819 in Warren County, Tennessee.

  3. 14.  Sterling Savage (son of Robert Savage and Elizabeth Bell); died in 1794 in Martin County, North Carolina.

    Notes:

Sterling SAVAGE had married early, but his young bride died when he was about 25 years old, leaving him with two young sons, Jesse and Sterling King SAVAGE.

He soon married young Susannah Swales, and together they added three children of their own to the two boys Sterling brought into the marriage.

Sterling and Susannah SAVAGE appear on a land deed in 1786 in Martin County, NC, and are listed on the 1790 Census there as well. In 1794, Sterling SAVAGE died, leaving his widow Susannah with five children, including her two step-sons Jesse and Sterling K..

Susannah remarried to Henry J. A. Hill, the son of the Sheriff of Edgecombe County, North Carolina, and shortly thereafter the new family moved to Georgia around 1800 for a few years, and then on to Warren County, Tennessee. Before we go on with the Tennessee SAVAGE story, a footnote about Susannah and her new husband is in order. Around 1808, Henry began an affair with 16 year old Polly Johnston, and continued the relationship, eventually having six children. The arrangement apparently was common knowledge to Susannah and the community as well, and the children of both families are entered in the same Family Bible. Henry Hill was well liked, and served three consecutive terms in the Tennessee Legislature. Oh well....

Sterling married Susannah Swales. Susannah was born on 31 Dec 1767; died on 23 Sep 1846 in Warren County, Tennessee; was buried in Hill Graveyard, McMinnville, Warren County, Tennessee. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  4. 15.  Susannah Swales was born on 31 Dec 1767; died on 23 Sep 1846 in Warren County, Tennessee; was buried in Hill Graveyard, McMinnville, Warren County, Tennessee.
    Children:
    1. 7. Brittania Beda Savage was born in (1785-1792).
    2. Jesse Savage died in 0___ 1848 in Warren County, Tennessee.

Generation: 5

  1. 28.  Robert Savage was born in 1730 (son of Lovelace Savage, Jr. and Lucy LNU).

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Will: 13 Sep 1788, Martin County, North Carolina

    Notes:

Robert SAVAGE was born most likely in the 1730's, but we are not sure if he was born in Virginia, or after his family moved to North Carolina.

He married Elizabeth BELL, and by 1788 they had raised eight children during the period that included the turbulent times of the French and Indian War, and the American Revolution.

On December 21, 1776, Robert and Elizabeth sold their 200 acres on Deep Creek in Edgecobe County, NC, and moved to Martin County, NC, about 70 miles to the east, where Robert SAVAGE wrote out his Last Will and Testament on September 13, 1788, listing his wife and seven children as his heirs. One of the Executors of the Will, was son Sterling SAVAGE.

Robert married Elizabeth Bell. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 29.  Elizabeth Bell
    Children:
    1. 14. Sterling Savage died in 1794 in Martin County, North Carolina.

Generation: 6

  1. 56.  Lovelace Savage, Jr. (son of Loveless Savage, Sr. and Sarah LNU); died about 1775 in Edgecombe County, North Carolina.

    Notes:

Sometime between 1729 and 1759, Loveless SAVAGE Jr. decided to head south, and moved his family to Edgecombe County, North Carolina, created in 1741, an area that soon would become known for its vast pine forests used to produce pine tar, a necessity used for sealing tight the wooden ships of that period. (Today's Carolina "Tar Heel"s get their nickname from this process in the 1800's).

Not much is known about Loveless SAVAGE Jr., and he died around 1775, leaving behind his wife Lucy, and a son Robert

Lovelace married Lucy LNU. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 57.  Lucy LNU
    Children:
    1. 28. Robert Savage was born in 1730.

Generation: 7

  1. 112.  Loveless Savage, Sr. was born in Surry County, Virginia (son of Robert Savage and Mary LNU); died in 1729 in Surry County, Virginia.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Will: 6 Oct 1728, Surry County, Virginia

    Notes:

Loveless Sr. (spelling varies) also lived and died in Surry County, Virginia, and we have his will, dated October 6, 1728, which begins,

"'In the name of God Amen. I Loveless SAVIDGE, living in Lawnes Creek Parish, in the County of Surry, Being Weak and Sickly in body but of Perfect mind and memory, thanks be to God therefore, and calling to Mind of the mortality of my body and knowing that it is ordained for all Persons once to die, therefore I appoint and ordain this to be my last Will & Testament ..."

Ready for, and aware of his impending death, Loveless itemized and gave away such things as a feather bed and a pewter dish to his wife Sarah and children, while an Inventory taken after his death listed his possessions as including a spinning wheel, old trunks, honey jugs, and brass candlesticks.

Loveless SAVAGE was dead by May of 1729, where we pick up the story with his son, Lovelace SAVAGE Jr.

Loveless married Sarah LNU(Surry County, Virginia). Sarah was born in (Surry County, North Carolina); died in (Surry County, North Carolina). [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 113.  Sarah LNU was born in (Surry County, North Carolina); died in (Surry County, North Carolina).
    Children:
    1. 56. Lovelace Savage, Jr. died about 1775 in Edgecombe County, North Carolina.

Generation: 8

  1. 224.  Robert Savage was born in (Surry County, Virginia); died in Surry County, Virginia.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Probate: 1697, Surry County, Virginia

    Notes:

...SAVAGE family line begins over 100 years before the American Revolution, in the Colony of Virginia, on the southwest side of the James River, in the Parish of Lawnes Creek, in the County of Surry.

The only facts we know about our head of this line, is by the 1697 Last Will and Testament of Robert SAVAGE, in which he names his wife Mary and children as heirs.

We know that his son, our next in line, had an unusual name, Loveless SAVAGE, but we do not know what his parents were thinking when they named him...

Robert married Mary LNU(Surry County, Virginia). Mary was born in (Surry County, Virginia); died in (Surry County, Virginia). [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 225.  Mary LNU was born in (Surry County, Virginia); died in (Surry County, Virginia).
    Children:
    1. 112. Loveless Savage, Sr. was born in Surry County, Virginia; died in 1729 in Surry County, Virginia.
