Too 'Frail' for Confederate Ranks, Non-Combatant, Nearly 101, Dies

William M. Bess, rejected as too frail to serve in the Confederate Army in 1861, died Saturday morning just twenty days short of his 101st birthday. He remained in vigor and health until the last and was ill but six days.

He had lived for the last thirty-five years at the home of his daughter, Mrs. C.M. Lorhum, near Joelton.

Funeral services were conducted for him this afternoon at the Oakland Freewill Baptist Church by the Rev. J.L. Welch. Burial was in the Oakland Cemetery.

Mr. Bess's vigor was as remarkable as his very great age and until his final illness, he was able to walk about - enjoying a daily three-quarter mile constitutional - and could read without glasses. Until three years ago, he "walked down to Nashville" - some twelve miles distant- whenever he "took a notion. Mr. Bess never claimed to have a formula for his health and longevity, but pointed out that he never used tobacco, drank little liquor and had eaten no meat during the latter years of his life.

When the Civil War broke out, Mr. Bess volunteered, seeking enlistment in the Confederate Army, but he was turned down because whooping cough and measles had settled in his lungs and he was deemed too frail. He was born in Warren County near the McMinnville and Smithville highways. He lived on a farm in that community during his youth and spent most of his life engaged in farming in Warren County.

Surviving him are: his daughter, Mrs. Lohrum; a son, Luster Bess; and a half brother, Henry Bess of Nashville.

His grandsons, William, Henry, Edgar, Almar and Edward Bess, and Polk Merryman, served as pallbearers.

    David,

I just found this in my email. Do you have this? Do any of the dates work with what you do have? Thought I'd send it just in case you didn't have it.
Hope you and Sheila are doing well. Are you going to get to come to Tennessee later in the fall? Hope you can.
    Love you,
    Christine

Subject: more info on Henry Bess

I found an old email from Robert White (RobWhite@dekalb.net ) from 1999. This is what it said:

I don't find a lot to answer your DeKalb Co. inquiry with, hope someone else can help you more. In the 1860 Census, Henry, age 30, and his wife, Elizabeth, age 25 are living in the northwest part of Dekalb Co. in the Helton Creek area, with their two year old son William. They also have living in their household Delia Crook, a 55 year old widow, and her children, Washington, 18, Ellen, 15 and Jermiah, 12. I do not know if they are any relationship.

In 1870, Henry, now shown as age 45 and his wife, Elizabeth, 35, are living in the Dry Creek area (4th district). This area is south of the present towns of Dowelltown and Liberty. It lies in the central western part of the county. Their son William is now 12 years old.

In 1880, Henry now 54, and Elizabeth, now 45, are still on Dry Creek and son, William is 22 year old widower. There is an erasure after his name on the census records (for what I do not know). He has two children, Ellen age 3 and James H. age 1.

Henry is the only Bess listed in these three census. In 1850 there is a Finus Bess, age 21 at Blue Springs in the southern part of the county. There is a Phinies Bess age 21, Henry J. Bess, age 17 and Eliabeth Bess, age 16 and Caroline Bess, age 12 all living with John Bayne (Bain) at Belk in the southern part of the county. There is a William Bess age 31 with wife Mary, age 25 and a daughter Sarah age 11 months living in the northeast part of the county at Sligo on the Caney Fork River. They have living with them, Nancy Willis, age 65. I do not know if she is a relative.

Henry J. Bess is buried in the Dismal Cemetery about 2 miles north of Dowelltown. His tombstone has a birth date of Sept. 22, 1824 but no death date. Buried beside him is Mary E. Bess born Oct. 12, 1829 and died Sept. 27, 1894. These may be for your Henry and Elizabeth. In the same cemetery there is a Martha, wife of Henry Bess, born March 20, 1836, died March 15, 1910. Amazingly, these seem to be the only Bess tombstones in Dekalb Co.

My great grandfather, James Harrison White, was 1st Lieutenant of the (?) F, 4th Tenn. Mtd. Infantry. The U.S. mounted infantry groups that were raised here in Dekalb Co. mostly were raised for the purpose of overcoming the confederate guerilla bands operating in the area (which it did.)

I could kick myself since I did not have this info with MY BOOK I keep info in!!!!

In honor and of the memory of my 5th Great Grandfather William Dunn. William married my 5th Great Grandmother Elizabeth Bradley, on December 11, 1810, Lebanon, Wilson County, Tennessee. I wish I knew more about him, but maybe in time.

I can find only three children of William and Elizabeth:

    William Dunn (1810 - 1880)
    Thomas B. Dunn (1811 - 1900)
Mary "Pollie" Dunn (1819-1890), my 4th Great Grandmother, (Find A Grave Memorial# 8867973) who married James "Jim" George.

I found my third Great Uncle, William Henry George (Find A Grave Memorial# 143095248), the son of my 4th Great Grandparents, James and Mary "Pollie" Dunn-George, in the 1890 Veterans census in Trousdale County. He must have moved back before the 1920's when he filled out his questionnaire. That part of Tennessee where he lived started off as part of Sumner County, then part of Smith County, then part of Warren County and finally Dekalb County.

For question #43 & #44 regarding ancestry, William answered:

"{Mother's name} Mary Dunn {Mother's parents} William Dunn; Elizabeth Dunn." William Henry went on to say, "My Grandfather William Dunn was in the War of 1812, Butler County, {Alabama?} and I think he was in some of the Indian engagements."

I have no specific death date or any burial location for William.

This may be with same William Dunn of the War of 1812; Corporal, 13th Regiment of the Kentucky Militia.

William married Elizabeth Bradley on 11 Dec 1810 in Lebanon, Wilson County, Tennessee. Elizabeth was born in 1795 in (Cumberland County) Virginia; died in 1870 in Wilson County, Tennessee. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

My 5th Great Grandmother Elizabeth Bradley married my 5th Great Grandfather William Dunn on December 11, 1810, in Lebanon, Wilson County, Tennessee.

I have found where some say Elizabeth was born in Cumberland County, Virginia. I am not sure. A number of Bradley's were living in Wilson County, Tennessee, in 1820, but I can't find any before that time. The 1880 DeKalb County, Tennessee, census, for my 4th Great Grandmother, Mary "Pollie" Dunn-George states that her mother was born in Ireland. Elizabeth Bradley Dunn was of course her mother. Just another possibility to consider.

It would appear Elizabeth's son Thomas took it upon himself to look after and support Elizabeth until her death sometime between 1870 and 1880, in Wilson County, Tennessee. She was alive for the July 20, 1870, Wilson County, Tennessee, census, and Thomas was married December 7, 1870, after taking care of her for decades. She probably died in 1870, from the time of the census to Thomas' marriage.
