    David,

Yes, I have a Ida Jane listed as a child of Lowra Monroe Merriman. I will give you all I have - this info came from my great aunt who is still living in Bridgeport, AL

William Alan Merriman married Malita Curby and they had the following children:

Lowra Monroe; William; Rufus; Milton Owen; Walter Lewis; Carolyne; Jane and Adeline.

Lowra Monroe Merriman married Martha Ann McGarr and they had the following children:

John Floyd; William Luther (my gg-grandfather); Tom Polk; Charles Richard; Homer Sewell; Annette Loyd; Ida Jane; Lillie Mae; Ethel Lee; Mollie Edna; Mattie Lowra and Josie. ** the date 1873 showes up beside Ida Elliott's name. . . could this be her birth year?

The father of William Alan Merriman was a Demarcus Merriman born about 1760-1770 in Lancaster Co., VA. He died in 1850 in Bledsoe Co. TN. He married Elizabeth (ukn) who was born about 1772 in N. C. So far nothing on Demarcus' parents.

I do have a tidbit on Martha Ann McGarr. . . her father William Issac McGarr came to America from Ireland as a stowaway during the potato famine. He married a Susan Shumake and Martha Ann was born in Pikeville, TN April 1852 and died on Feb. 13, 1925.

I hope this helps you. Debbie

William married Malitia Margaret Kirby on 13 Nov 1823 in Burke County, North Carolina. Malitia (daughter of William W. Kirby, Patriot and Eliza LNU) was born on 15 Apr 1806 in (Surry County) North Carolina; died on 1 Mar 1886 in Bledsoe County, Tennessee. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

A very kind researcher forwarded a will abstract to me some months ago for John Kerby of Burke/Wilkes County, NC. In that will, John names the children of his brother, William, and his sister, Sarah?, as well. Apparently, John and his wife never had children and he left everything to his nieces and nephews. Among his nephews, a boy by the name of Bailey Kerby. A girl, Lettie, is who I am hoping is my Malitia. She would have been Bailey's sister and I know that my Malitia was born around 1806. So it is very probable that Bailey Kerby, the person listed in John Kerby's will, is one in the same. AND IF Bailey is my Malitia's brother, that would make their parents William and Eliza Kerby. Notice, Bailey Kerby named his second daughter Eliza. Just thought I'd share my donated tidbits with you!

Dorothy, do you have anything on a Malitia Margaret Kerby, whose mother was named Eliza. She was born 1806 in the Surry County, NC, area. She married William Merriman in Burke County, NC in the early 1820's. He was from Wilkes County, NC. They moved, with her mother, to Bledsoe County, TN, around 1830. I suppose I'm looking for a will or deed that names her and her father. Thanks!

Ridly Chancellor & C (?) upon the report of Stephen Hicks the special Commissioner here to fore ordered in this cause & the exceptions filed by the defendants thereon which exception being since heard & understood by the court are ordered to be overruled & said report in all things confirmed from which it appears that the defendant Lewis D. Merriman was indebted to the complainants for principal & interest on the 15th day of March 1848 in the sum of $692.34 & that the distributive share of the said Lewis D. Merriman in the personal estate of his father Demarcus Merriman deceased in the hands of his administrators. Willie & Allen Merriman amounts to the sum of $350.38 & it further appears from said report that commissioners were appointed by the Circuit Court of Bledsoe County who assigned to the widow of the said Demarcus Merriman deceased dower in his real estate & also to the defendant Lewis D. Merriman his distributive share of residue of said estate unencumbered with the dower distinguished in the commissioners report as lot No. 9 & described as follows.

    Pg 590--Tues Mar 13, 1855

Unknown said Eveline being sister to said Benton A now deceased & Lewis D. Merriman.

    Mary Merryman mentioned.

(There was so much on these Merriman's in the court record that I just gave up writing it down. At that time I didn't recognize any names. I was in Salt Lake Library & was trying to get as much information that I could on my lines.) Now I wish I had.

I gathered all my information that I have collected over the years & for at least a month, I have been trying to piece it all together.

We all descend from John & Audrey Merryman, John the immigrant. Came in early 1600's to VA then they went on to MD. All of that information is in MD Hist. Mag. by Culver. I have that.

1st generation was John & Audrey.
2nd generation was Charles Merryman Sr.
3rd generation was Charles Merryman Jr.
4th generation was John Charles Merryman, called Charles, he married Millicent Haile.MERRIMAN/MERRYMAN

I don't know from which of John Charles children we descend from, but I think it was a Charles that had a wife Elizabeth. He died and the family eventually moved to Bledsoe Co., TN, remarried. I descend from his second wife. He had about 4 children under 10 when wife Betsy Cook died. Elisha, Malachia Merryman and a few others followed him to IL. Others stayed in Bledsoe Co., TN.

They say most of Bledsoe Records had been destroyed, but I know that the one I just typed off is still available, think it was on film. They all originated from Granville, NC, They were in Lancaster, VA. They may never had moved, when the states redid their state lines. They may have been just over the line.

So many in those days couldn't read or write and names spelled as they sounded.

Book: Marriage Records 1765-1810 Mecklenburg Co., VA
By: Katherine B. Elliott Copyright 1963, reprint 1984

    Notes on Marriage Records
In compiling this volume of early marriage records of Mecklenburg County, it was deemed advisable to examine the marriage records of Granville County, NC, because of the close association of the early families in the two counties.

Many of the early residents of Granville County had settled first in Mecklenburg & later moved to Granville. Colonial Granville County was established in the same year, 1746, in which Lunenburg County was created. Warren, Vance & the present Granville, all boarding on Mecklenburg County, were a part of Colonial Granville County. Many of the early Mecklenburg County people owned land on both sides of the state line dividing the two counties; & in many of the early wills reference is made to land owned in North Carolina.

The information that I have is the following.

Demarcus [Mark] Merriman had land in Wilkes Co., NC in 1807/1810. He died before 1848 in Bledsoe Co., TN. There is a will or estate papers for him in Bledsoe Co., TN naming wife Elizabeth.

(Editor's Note: Bledsoe County Clerk cannot find any papers for DeMarcus - I contacted them in 2012 - DAH)

    Children are:

    Briant/Bryant [b.c.1794 VA] married [Wilkes Co., NC Sept 1818] Martha Ferguson;
    William Allen [b.c.1798 NC]; Owen [b.c.1806 NC probably Wilkes] married [Nov 4, 1834 Wilkes Co., NC] Jane Colvard [Bill's line];
    Nancy married [Nov 12, 1834 Wilkes Co] Jesse Colvard;
    Elizabeth married [Feb 14 Wilkes Co.] Levi Green;
Virginia "Jenny" married [Mar 26, 1813 Wilkes Co.] Thomas Carlton.

There is a will/estate papers in Granville Co., NC for a Charles Merriman & wife Millicent & a Malachi is named there.

I think it may have given the relationship of Malachi to Charles & Millicent but not sure. I've only seen the abstract info in a book. The will/estate info for both Charles & his wife Millicent are at the NC State Archives. We don't know what the relationship between Demarcus/Mark & Charles was [could have been parent or maybe grandparent]. This Charles & Millicent Merriman could be the John "Charles" Merriman who married Millicent Hale/Hail in Baltimore Co., MD. It is reported that they were in several counties in VA before going to GranvillCo., NC. There have been quiet a few people working on this Demarcus/Mark Merriman puzzle. Welcome to our club! If your Allen isn't the son of Demarcus, then he is probably the grandson. There is a marriage for a William Merriman married [Nov 13, 1823 NC]Malita Kirby. Some say that Malita is a misspelling. Looking forward to hearing from you.

    _______

WE think your Mark may be the father to our Nancy Merriman who married Henry Webb. We have found info that many of the Merrimans ended up in Caldwell Co. N.C.

Dovie Meeriman married a Benjamin Gilbert in Caldwell.
Lewis Merriman operated a stagecoach in Caldwell County about 1835.
We also have an Augustus Merryman who was in Buncombe Co.
There was also an Owen that ended up in Buncombe Co. that may be this Mark Merrimans son.

We discovered most of these Merriman names you have listed have a mother named as Sally. She shows as a head of household from about 1830 to 1850 in Caldwell Co. We also have a Merriman that married an Isaac Green in Burke Co. N.C. We know that this hodgepodge of info ties together somehow, we just aren't sure how. Hope this helps and please pass on anything you have.

Mark Merriman also appeared in the 1830 Wilkes Co., NC Census. All Merriman cousins, including myself, believe this to be Demarcus Merriman who was born between 1760 - 1770 In Lancaster, VA. He married Elizabeth Unknown, born abt. 1772 in North Carolina. Demarcus died before 1850 in Bledsoe County, TN. Demarcus & Elizabeth had the following children:

Have copy of land warrant from N C State Archives: County Wilkes; Name Merimon, Mark; Acers 50; Grant No . 2787; Issued 6 Dec 1810; Entry No. 495; Entered 20 Mar 1809; Book No. 1 27; Page No. 401; Location On waters of Beaver Creek.

In the 1810 censu s his age was listed of 26 & under 45 [putting his birth year between 17 66 & 1774]. In the 1840 census his age was listed of 60 & under 70 [put ting his birth between 1771 & 1780]. With this info, he was probably bo rn 1774 & before 1780.

The goal is to find the parents of Mark/Demarkus .

DeMarcus' son, Allen Merriman, names his first son, "Isaac Mark Merriman". Could this imply that Demarcus' full name might be, "Isaac DeMarcus Merriman"? Just another clue...DAH

William, Allen, Nancy, Jenny, Mary (never married), Elizabeth M., Briant, Lewis D. and Owen.

Do you have any information on this Mark Merriman before he appeared on the 1810 Wilkes Co. Census?

There is a missing link between him and the Merryman/Merriman families of Lancaster, VA. and Baltimore, Ann Arundel Counties, MD.

Any thing you might add will be greatly appreciate.

    Surname: Merriman

Recorded in several forms including Merriman, Merryman, Merriment, Maryman, and the usually Irish, Marmon and Marmion, this ancient surname is found in most parts of the British Isles, although is never common. It is a derivative of the Olde English pre 7th century personal name 'Myrige', meaning merry, which in the medival period became a nickname surname given either to a person of 'honest' character, or a professional clown, one who took part in the theatres of the day. The suffix ending "man(n)" was in the context of a surname, a form of endearment meaning "friend of". The overall meaning is probably "Merry's friend". Given the robust humour of the medieval period as shown in the famous works of Geoffrey Chaucer, the alternative possibility exists, that the name could sometimes mean the very reverse of merry! Early examples of the recordings taken from authentic registers and charters of the period include John Meryman in the registers of Gloucester, known as the "Letter books", in the year 1359, whilst Adam Myryman is recorded in the 1379 Poll Tax rolls of the city of York. Later examples include those of Alice Merriman, who married Thomas Chalduke at St James church, Clerkenwell, London, on October 9th 1563, and John Meriment, christened at St Botolphs without Aldgate, also London, on October 17th 1686. The famous Irish poet Brian Merriman, was born in 1757, and died in 1810. The first recorded spelling of the surname is believed to be that of Adam Muryman, which was dated 1332, in the subsidy rolls of the county of Staffordshire, during the reign of King Edward III of England, who reigned from 1327 to 1377.

I think that I've narrowed the Kerby line down to brothers John and William Kerby of Wilkes/Burke Counties, NC. Just going from memory here, but John didn't have children, but willed things to brother William's children. I think that William had a daughter referred to as Letty (Malitia?) and I don't have access to the necessary records to be sure that it's the right bunch. I didn't find this info, a kind gentleman posted the will and I just tried to fit the pieces together. If you have access to Wilkes/Burke NC and have the time, you may want to check it out! I will get around to it in time, but that it something I lack right now! Maybe when the kids return to school.........
Take care, and I'll keep you posted!

Lori, I'm searching for a John Kirby who married Elizabeth Humphreys(ies). They married about 1800 in Burke Co I believe. This is where the Humphreys lived. Her sisters that I know about are Frances, (my ggggrandmother) Nancy and Rhoda. Her brothers were James, William and George. Her parents are William and Susannah Webb Humphreys. Frances was born in 1780. Maybe you can figure something out. Don't know anything about John or his family

    Surname: Kirby

Recorded in many spelling forms including: Cerby, Cirby, Curby, Cerbee, Kirby, Kirkby, Kirkebye, Kerbey, Kerby, and Kurby this is an English surname.

It is of locational origin from one of the numerous places named Kirby or Kirkby, as for example, Kirby le Soken in the county of Essex; Kirby Cane in Norfolk; Monks Kerby in Warwickshire; Kirby Hill in the North Riding of Yorkshire; Kirkby on Bain in Lincolnshire; and Kirkby Lonsdale, in Westmorland.

These places, recorded variously as Chirchebi, Kerkeby and Kirchebi in the famous Domesday book of 1086 for the above counties, derive from the Northern Middle English word "kirk", meaning a church and ultimately from the Olde Norse word "kirkja," with "byr", a farm.

The Olde English pre 7th Century "cyrice", also meaning "church," accounts for the initial "C" in some Domesday Book recordings.

Early examples of the surname recording taken from surviving early registers include: Richard Kyrby in the Subsidy Rolls of Suffolk in 1524, whilst on October 19th 1589, Ann Kirby was christened at the famous church of St. Dunstan's in the East, Stepney, and Nathaniel Curbee was christened at the church of Holy Trinity in the Minories, in the city of London, on February 21st 1647.

The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Godebold de Kirkebi. This was dated 1121, in the records of the Abbey of Bury St. Edmund's, Suffolk, during the reign of King Henry 1st of England, 1100 - 1135.

Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.

SPARTANBURG COUNTY, SC records (Equity Court, box 21, Pkg 3) tell us that John made a will dated 9 May 1813 and that it was presented to the court 5 July 1813. The witnesses of the will, were not able to attest to his being of sound mind, and the will was not proven.

His son-in-law, Nathan Byers, then requested to be administrator but Rebecca Turner, wife of the decedent, stepped up to claim the administratorship.

This will gave son, Nathan, a negro named Job and all his smith tools. To daughter, Sally, a negro named Sarah. All the rest to his wife, Rebecca, and after her death to be divided between all his children.

He named Joseph Price and Joshua Richards as his executors. Witnesses; Jesse Turner, Rachel Price and Robert Price. Appraisers of the estate were; Charles Hester, Joseph Price, Nathan Byers, Joseph Camp and Joshua Richards.

The estate was appraised and a sale of personal property was held. But the estate was vigorously disputed and not settled until after the death of Rebecca in 1836.

In the Probate Court records of SRARTANBURG COUNTY (file 375 SC Archives) in the settlement of his mother's affiars, William's children are said to all live out of state and are named; Real Estate Papers of the Probate Court involve the sale of the property of Rebecca Turner after her death which took place before 17 October 1836. 2. William MERRYMAN (John1) was born before 1652 in Lancaster Co., VA and died in 1697, about age 45. General Notes: When John Sr died in the late 1600 William inhereited the lands totaling 1700 acures. Charles and John moved to Baltimore .

. He was chosen, on April 1, 1657, as a Churchwarden for the Church of England parish on the north side of the Rappahannock River ("Christ's Church"). On November 10, 1680, he was deeded 500 acres in Lancaster County that his father had patented in 1649. On July 11, 1677, he deeded his brother Charles Merryman land he had inherited from their father. William Merryman's will was probated in 1697 in Lancaster County Court. His wife, whose name is unknown, evidently died before 1697 since she is not mentioned in his will, from which the following information about his family comes. William married Mary (MERRYMAN) . Mary (MERRYMAN) died before 1697.

Children from this marriage were: + 7 M i. Thomas MERRYMAN was born about 1674 and died in 1718 in , Lancaster Co., VA, about age 44. 8 F ii. Margaret MERRYMAN was born before 1678. 9 M iii. William MERRYMAN was born about 1680 and died in 1740 in Lancaster Co., VA, about age 60.

    1. John MERRYMAN , son of ?? MERRYMAN and Unknown , was born in 1614 in Monkton Manor, Herefordshire England, died on 21 Nov 1674 in Lancaster Co., VA, at age 60, and was buried in Christ Church In VA. General Notes: The History of Hereford can be traced to the early 7th century AD when the Saxon settlers fortified the site against the marauding Welsh. Situated adjacent to a ford over the River Wye, the name is said to derive from the Old English, ford used by the army. Following the Conquest, the Normans extended the city to the north, beyond the Saxon ramparts, and surronded it by fortified perimeter wall. The city remained a military stronghold until the 17th century. Hereford was valiantly loyal to the Crown during the English Civil War (AD 1642-49) but afterwords lost its strategic significance.

There has been no family information linking John Merryman to Herefordshire nor is there any information in the town naming John Merryman. Some historians of Herefordshire do note that there was a Monkton Manor, but it is no longer standing.

John Merryman, the bother of James Merryman, was born in England about 1614. He immigrated to Virginia by 1638, when he patented 150 acres adjoining Weyanoke in Charles City County, on May 10, 1638. He lived there until about 1649 when he moved to Lancaster County, Virginia, where he patented land in 1649, and acording to a court record had a new dwelling house in 1652. Audrey Merryman, the wife of John who sponsered her immigration, came from England to Virginia in 1649 when he evidently returned to England to marry her and bring her home to Virginia.

On November 14, 1649, John Merryman patented 500 acres in Lancaster County (then located in Northumberland County since Lancaster County was formed in 1652), on the north side of the Rappahannock River on Island Neck Creek. The new home in Lancaster County is mentioned in a court order of September 21, 1652. John Merryman was a attorney as well as a planter.

John Merryman, Sr., is listed among churchwardens and sidesmen, appointed by the court, in parish records of 1650-1664, before Lancaster and Middlesex counties were divided and a general vestry was formed in 1661. He died in 1674 in Lancaster County where his will was dated December 3, 1673, and probated on January 13, 1674. He and his wife Audrey had four sons and a daughter, born in Lancaster County. They were William, Elizabeth (both born by 1652) , and Richard who remained in Lancaster County, John Merryman, Jr., of James City County, Virginia, and Charles Merryman who moved to Baltimore County, Maryland. (Above notes came from web page of William "Bill" Merryman II at merrymanfamily.com) John married Audrey Haile. She was the daughter of Nicholas Haile and Mary Travers. She was born about 1635 and died after 1680 .

Children from this marriage were: + 2 M i. William MERRYMAN was born before 1652 in Lancaster Co., VA and died in 1697, about age 45. 3 F ii. Elizabeth MERRYMAN was born before 1652 in Lancaster Co., VA. 4 M iii. John MERRYMAN Jr., + 5 M iv. Charles MERRYMAN was born before 1660 in Lancaster Co., VA and died on 22 Dec 1725 in St Pauls Parish, Baltimore Co., MD, about age 65.

    Descendants of John MERRYMAN

There were a number of Merrymans in Colonial Virginia between 1638 and 1650.

The name Merryman and Merriman shows up early on Virginia Records. Merryman in The Chancery Patent Rolls of 12 Charles I, part 23, (1636/1637) Merryman in Port Book of London, Waiters Overseas (1637/1638)

The relationship of John Merryman to there others is not certain. These others include a John Merryman and John Merryman Jr. who settled around Isle of Wight Co. VA. John, the father of Charles, is thought to been related to Richard Merryman who also settled in Lancaster Cp VA and lived close by to John. There is evidence of several men named Merryman coming to Maryland prior to Charles Merryman. In Skordas' "Early Settlers of Maryland" There is a John Merryman listed as being transported prior to 1677 (l.15/f.448) and prior to 1679 (l. WC/f.108) and a William Merryman transported before 1663 (l.6/f.214). Also a James Merriman was among the early settlers of Anne Arundel Co MD, being a justice in 1650. James Merryman assigned his grant of 500 acres of land in 1662 to John Browne of New England.
Charles Merryman of Baltimore Co has long been known to come from Lancaster Co., VA, as he was styled Wheelwright of Crototoman River, Virginia as grantee of the 300 acre tract "East Humphreys"on the north side of Patapsco River dated 30 March 1682 from Thomas Everset, planter and wife Hannah, alias Hanah Bale.1 Also many of the genealogies that address the family, identify records in Lancaster Co that show he was the son of John and Audrey Merriman. However, what seems to be missing from most of the material on the family is the fact that his first wife, Mary, was the daughter of Nicholas and Mary Hale/Heale and the widow of Henry King. He had a second wife Mary who appears to be the mother of his daughter, while his three sons are by Mary Hale. The Henry King who left a will dated 18 Jan 1717 in Baltimore Co appears to have been the step-son of Charles Maerryman. Also in the Virginia records we find the likely reason why Charles Merriman left Virginia and came to Maryland

The trail of evidence for the identity of Mary, wife of Charles Merryman starts with the court of 12 Nov 1672 in Lancaster Co in an action concerning the estates of Nicholas HALE and Mary Hale. A suite was filed by Henry King, who married Mary, the daughter of Nicholas Hale against George Hale, the Administrater of Mary Hale who was the administrix of the estate of Nicholas Hale. The court ordered that one-third part of the two third part of Nicholas Hale's estate and a one-third part of the estate of Mary Hale be delivered to Henry King. This action shows that Mary Hale, daughter of Nicholas and Mary married Henry King. It also indicates she had two sibblings. At the 12 March 1672/3 Court there is further action about the suite of Henry King, the husband of Mary daughter of Nicholas Hale against George Hale, administrator of Mary Hale who has been administrix of Nicholas Hale in which Thomas Martyn, Nicholas George, Thomas Bickley, and John Arnold on the 15th Instant were to divide the estate into three equal parts.

On 8 March 1681/82 a suite was filed in Lancaster Co Court by Nicholas George and George Heale, securities for the Estate of Henry KING. The Court order that since Charles MERRYMAN, who had married the widow and relict of the said KING, had clandestinely departed the Country, that for the security of Nicholas GEORGE and George Heale, an Inventory of the whole Estate belonging to Charles Merriman in this County be forthwith taken by Robert PRITCHARD and Thomas PARFIT and exhibited to the next Court. This is the time of course at which Charles Merryman purchased the 300 acre track "East Humphreys" in Baltimore County (30 April 1682).

For further data on Charles Merryman in Virginia, researchers are encouraged to look at the Court Order books for Lancaster County, VA that have been extracted by the Sparacios. , & the series Cavaliers and Pioneers of Virginia.

We all descend from John & Audrey Merryman, John the immigrate.

The first recorded spelling of the surname is believed to be that of Adam Muryman, which was dated 1332, in the subsidy rolls of the county of Staffordshire, during the reign of King Edward 111 of England, who reigned from 1327 to 1377.

John Merryman & Audrie Heynes, progenitors of the Merryman family in the USA
    Posted by: Michael Merryman

Does anyone know about the parents of John Merryman (b. circa 1625) and/or Audrie Heynes that came to Lancester County, Virginia prior to 1650 and started the Merryman line in the United States?

John's children started the Merryman family of Maryland, among many other lines of descendency.

John and Audrie apparently came from Herefordshire, England, and one source from Family Tree Maker's World Family Tree says that father of John Merryman is William.

    About George Hale, of Jamestown
No proof that this George Hale is the father of Nicholas Haile (immigrant)

George Hale, said to have been the son of William Hale, Esq., of King's Walden, and wife Rose Bond, was born July 13, 1601 in Hertfordshire, England. Many believe that he was the original Hale or Hale emigrant to Virginia. This is not well proven, but more information is below.

Those who do not believe that this is the emigrant point out that this George was the son of a well-to-do landowner from Hertfordshire and the emigrant was an indentured servant. Also, George the emigrant is believed to be from Kent, not from Hertfordshire.

The only information I have is:

George Haile Born about 1602 in Bristol, England. He was a passenger on the Ship "Supply" that landed in Virginia in 1620. His occupation was a Drummer or Salesman. He married around 1626, wife unknown. His known children were John, Thomas and Nicholas Haile Senior. He died about 1662 in Lancaster County, Virginia.

Other people on ancestry.com say his father was Nicholas Haile, but I have no clue if that is right or not.

    DISCLAIMER:

I am a seventh generation decendant of the first Nicholas Haile of Virginia. I was personally acquainted with Maude Crowe. She did us all a great disservice with her sloppy research and by making a completely unwarranted connection with the drummer boy on the Supply. There is no documentation to support this. I have never seen any reliable link beyond the first Nicholas going back to England. Unfortunately the internet spreads a lot of misleading information.

    Hale name meaning

English (also well established in South Wales): topographic name for someone who lived in a nook or hollow, from Old English and Middle English hale, dative of h(e)alh ‘nook’, ‘hollow’. In northern England the word often has a specialized meaning, denoting a piece of flat alluvial land by the side of a river, typically one deposited in a bend. In southeastern England it often referred to a patch of dry land in a fen. In some cases the surname may be a habitational name from any of the several places in England named with this fossilized inflected form, which would originally have been preceded by a preposition, e.g. in the hale or at the hale.
