The Shipleys and Mitchells moved to near Greenfield, Dade Co. MO. in around 1850. James Mitchell(1796-1882) and Martha McGregor (1794-1872) were the parents of many of these Mitchells. I do appreciate hearing from you.

James and Martha McGregor Mitchell, moved from N.C. to Warren Co. abt. 1800~1810 way I have it figured since they had 11 children and the first was born in 1811 (William B. Mitchell) This B could stand for either Box or Burleson some has it both way's I tend to think Box since the Box Family are supposedly in the family farther back and why Burleson he William married a Malinda (Matilda) Burleson the family would have had to had connections with this Clan before William was born.

This was my 2nd Great-Grandfather. All the other 10 children were born there too...in McMinnville or there close 'bouts.

The second child was Lucinda A. she Married a Tidence Shipley abt 1843.

The third was Margaret J. "Peggy" she married Isaac N. (I think Newton)Martin Abt. 1842

The fourth was Maxwell he married Rachel Foster in 1849. He died in the Civil War and his whereabouts are unknown. January 31, 1863

The fifth child was Richmond married Luinda Shipley abt. 1846

the sixth child was William Ela He marred abt. 1847 to Cynthia Adeline Morton and moved to Texas and died on April 27, 1883 in the F-5 tornado that tore through Bell County, Texas.

The seventh was James Andrew he married a Charlotte Adeline Harris about 1853 in Missouri.

The eighth child was Elizabeth H. "Eliza" Mitchell marred a Greenberry Cartwright in 1854. Not much is known about

the ninth child Alfred P. he married probally in Missouri year unknown to a Ellen McGuire.. there is a Alfred Mitchell listed in the Dade County Poorhouse Book unknown if it is the same at this time, as some has him as having died in Texas winter of 1902.

the tenth child Raleigh marred a Cynthia Underwood abt 1858 in Missouri. He died in Oklahoma 1913.

The eleventh child was Mary (Molly)Polly married a John Jackson Shipley abt 1841. This Group Moved to Dade County, Missouri in 1850.

I need assistance in Warren County TN. I am in Maryland and I am working with a prospective member for DAR. We can prove 7 Generations to James Mitchell b. 6 Jul 1796 in NC and is shown in the 1850 Warren County, TN census.

James Mitchell died in Dade Co Missouri in 8 Apr 1882. Sometime after 1850 he moved his family to Dade County, MO. James Mitchell married Martha McGregor b. 30 Sep 1794 in NC and died 22 Feb 1872 in Dade Co MO.

The 1880 Dade Co MO census shows James Mitchell (grandfather) and states as in all the census from 1850 - 1880 that he was born in NC, however, in 1880 census he states both of his parents were born in VA.

James was born in NC in 1796, moved to KY by 1800, later to Tenn by 1812. His obit. says that he was married to Martha McGregor by 1812. They stayed in Warren Co. TN until before 1850, when they removed to Washington Co. ILL, and later to Dade Co. Mo. His obit says that he had 122 great great grandchildren. He was buried in the Wetzel Cem in Dade Co.

James married Martha Jane McGregor on 8 Apr 1812 in Warren County, Tennessee. Martha (daughter of William "Will" McGregor, Jr. and Mary Jane Stiles) was born on 30 Sep 1794 in Montgomery County, North Carolina; died on 22 Feb 1892 in Greenfield, Dade County, Missouri; was buried in Wetzel Cemetery, Greenfield, Dade County, Missouri. There appear to have been at least two -and possibly three- pioneer Mitchell (or Mitchel) families in the area that is now Van Buren County, Tennessee. There is the Mitchell family settled in the Big Bottom and Hickory Valley area of what is now White County -who can be traced back to 1700's Caswell County, NC; there is the Mark Mitchel family of Bone C Mountain and Rocky River (Mitchell Knob is named for this family, I believe.); and there was Jacob Mitchell -who obtained a land grant around 1808 in what is now the Cummingsville community of Van Buren County.

Can the subject William Mitchell be connected to one of those pioneer Mitchell (or mitchel) families?

Reverend William McGregor (the "Fiery Old Scots Preacher"�) was born about 1730-35 probably in Scotland. No records have been found as to when he immigrated to America, but he first appears in North Carolina in 1771 on the Bute County North Carolina tax roll, and was mentioned in the Kehuky Baptist Association minutes in 1774.

He was ordained to preach in June 1776 in Franklin County.

He was the organizing pastor of Mouth of Uwharrie Baptist Church in 1780 in Montgomery County North Carolina.

It is believed by some that when William came to America he was joined by two brothers, John McGregor and Bartlett McGregor, and in fact there are a John McGregor and a Bartlett McGregor in North Carolina, but no evidence has surfaced that proves they are William's brothers.

William purchased land in Anson County in 1778 lying southwest of the PeeDee River near the mouth of Attaway Branch.

He paid taxes in 1780 and 1782 for five hundred acres of land in Montgomery County in the same location. That land is now part of Morrow Mountain State Park in western Montgomery County.

Some internet sites say that William married Sarah (Molly) Flowers, but I have not seen evidence to verify the marriage. The John McGregor referenced above, lived in Northampton County North Carolina and is said to have married Mary Flowers, and in his will his wife was named Mary and he had a son named Flowers. If William and John were brothers, perhaps they married sisters.

Rev. William McGregor and his wife are probably buried in the cemetery above the Kron Cemetery and is called the McGregor Cemetery at the Morrow Mountain State Park.

Rev. William died about 1804/5; it is not known when his wife died but probably around the same time as she was alive in the 1800 census.

There are many internet sites that have confused Rev. William, Sr. with his son William, Jr.

There are sites that say Bartlett McGregor is Rev. William's brother, and others that say Bartlett is William's son.

Some sites say Ezekiel and Willis are the sons of William, Jr. Also, Rev. William's daughters have never been addressed.

There is also a William Megriger aged 16-26 and wife on page 501. Could this be the male living in McGregor household in 1790? I don't think it is William Jr.'s son as he named a child William b. in 1805.

By 1810 census there were no McGregors in Montgomery County.

I have not researched any of William Sr.'s grandchildren but have relied on information contained in web sites.

In the 1790 and 1800 censuses, the names seem to have been put in a loose alphabetical order so we don't know how close together they lived to one another.

Bartlett McGregor moved to Stanly County North Carolina where he died .

William, Jr., Ezekiel and Willis moved to Warren County, Tennessee.

William McGregor, Jr. is the son of Rev. William McGregor, Sr. and was probably born between 1755 to 1770 either in Scotland or America and is probably the first son.

I think Bartlett McGregor is the son not the brother of Rev. William McGregor, Sr. William Sr. could have had a brother named Bartlett and he could have come to America, but is out of the picture by the above time frame.

Ezekiel and Willis b. 26 Nov. 1784 are the sons of William Sr. There could have been other sons who were out of the house or not living by the 1790 census.

There are web sites that say Mary Ann McGregor is a child of Rev. William McGregor, Sr. I believe she is the child of William McGregor, Jr. and his wife Mary Jane Stiles McGregor.

Any daughters of Rev. William McGregor, Sr. are probably married by the time of the 1790 census.

I have been told that a daughter named Susan married and moved to Rowan County North Carolina.

There is another who I believe is the daughter of Rev. William McGregor, Sr., and her name is Martha McGregor and she is my ancestor.

William Boyd was 16 years old when he joined the Rowan County North Carolina militia in 1777. He lived in Rowan County, but I have not been able to find his father among the Boyds living there. In his Revolutionary War pension file, he states that he served in the Revolutionary War with Bartlett McGregor. In 1784 he was living in his fatherãa€™s house when it burned down. I do not know where William was living in the 1790 census, but I believe he and Martha McGregor were married by this time. On March 18, 1794 William Boyd enters 100 acres great glade of Mountain Creek, border on McGehe. This land lies next to Rev. William McGregorãa€™s 500 acres. Also, McGehe is another name for McGregor, although it is usually spelled McGeehee. In the 1800 Montgomery County North Carolina census William Boyd and Martha McGregor Boyd are listed on page 518 as being age 26-45 with 1 male and 4 females under 10.

About 1808 when the McGregors moved to Warren County, Tennessee, William and Martha Boyd went with them. William states in his pension file that locations he lived after his service were Montgomery County, North Carolina, Warren County, Tennessee, Lauderdale County, Alabama, McNairy County, Tennessee, and Washington County, Arkansas where he died. Other Boyds show up in Warren County as well. The McGregors and Boyds are in the 1812 tax list of Warren County, Tennessee. Other families that traveled to Warren County from Montgomery County were Ware, Rowland, Martin, and Burleson.

I donãa€™t know the names or the fate of any of William and Martha McGregor Boydãa€™s children before 1800; the ones I do know about are McGregor b. 1804, William b. 1806, Willis b. 1808, Ezekiel b. 1811, Martha b. 1812 and another daughter I have not found as of yet. If anyone wants additional information regarding William and Martha Boyd please contact me directly.

I have not done any original work on this family, but, alas, have accepted what I have found that others have done. Now, I will have to find time to retrace your steps. :) I would appreciate any other information you might have to share.

I am a descendant of Avie McGregor and Benjamin Marks. To the best of my knowledge, Avie is William's granddaughter, a daughter of his son Ezekiel McGregor.

Thank you for your comments. I wish there were more records in North Carolina that had survived the centuries.

The MacGregor Clan in Scotland was a warring bunch and one of their favorite foes was the Clan Campbell. However, the Campbells were more political and were able to obtain legal grants for the MacGregor lands. This was a time when religious conflicts between the Catholics and the Protestant Crown of England was at its height. Several clans of MacGregors fought in the Jacobite rebellion for Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1745. On April 3, 1603, the MacGregor clan was proscribed and the name MacGregor was outlawed. The members of the clan were forced to take another surname and hide among the other clans; they were prosecuted and persecuted and were prohibited from carrying any weapon. The procription was lifted a few times, but was almost immediately put back in place. It wasnãa€™t until 1775 until the proscription was finally lifted for good. During this turbulent time we started seeing variations of the MacGregor name; the name McGeehee was one of those variations. There are still McGeehees in the United States today.

William MacGregor was a boy during the Jacobite rebellion. Hundreds of MacGregors left Scotland for America or for Ireland and then some of those came to America. Because Williamãa€™s name was outlawed, I doubt we will ever be able discover where in Scotland he lived. I have been told that most ships coming into Virginia from Scotland did not preserve the names of their passengers so that information is lost to us.

Information I have on Ezekiel is he married Sarah Ware (twin to Willisãa€™ wife) and he died on 9/23/1856 in Warren Co. Tennessee. Children were:

I really enjoy the historical information. It makes for interesting reading when combined with the family tree.

Avie is the name on her gravestone in Bell County, Texas.

The names of Ezekiel's children are the ones that I have, but I must admit I copied them from other sources and have not verified them. (I have been working on another side of my family.) The name Ezekiel McGregor Marks was given to Avie's son. He was always called "Mack" Marks. His grandson, my grandfather, was named Ezekiel Mack Hale.

The only information I have on Avie is below and was copied from the county history book for Bell County, Texas. It was submitted by a member of her family, George Huckabee.

AVIE MCGREGOR MARKS HUCKABEE
(March 6, 1819-October 9, 1897)

Avie McGREGOR was born in Warren County, Tennessee, on March 6, 1819, the daughter of Ezekiel and Sarah Ware McGREGOR. She married Benjamin MARKS in the mid 1830s and had two sons: James H. and Ezekiel McGregor "Mack".
A widow, she married Bartlett HUCKABEE in either Pontotoc County, Mississippi, or Middle Tennessee. Marriage records are not available for these counties for those years.
Avie and Bartlett HUCKABEE had three children: Jason, Charlotte Ann and Martha T. While in Mississippi, the Huckabees were members of the Laodicea Primitive Baptist Church where he was a deacon and often a delegate to the associational meetings. A farmer in Mississippi, Huckabee
also was a member of the state militia in 1864. This group was made up of older men of the home guard. The two Marks sons also served in the Confederate Army, but Jason was too young to serve.
After the end of the Civil War, the Huckabee family, in company with several Wilson families, left Mississippi to come to Wilson Valley in Bell County. Bartlett and Avie moved their church letter to Little Flock Primitive Baptist Church, but were later charter members of Mount Vernon Primitive Baptist Church, located near present Taylor's Valley.
Bartlett Huckabee died in Wilson Valley on March 10, 18??(my error). Avie also died in Wilson Valley. Their marked graves as well as their children, in-laws, and most of their grandchildren are in the Wilson Valley Cemetery.

Much of this information came from a document that my great uncle provided to my mother many years ago. I can verify much of the Pontotoc Co, MA information regarding the descendents of Ezekiel McGregor and his wife. However, my information does indicate that Wm did marry Sarah, but confusion arises that many people refer to her as "Molly", which is not the nickname for Sarah, but for Mary. My mother's name was Sarah. It would not be unusual for Wm to have married Mary's sister, as his twin sons married twin sisters. I would be interested in sharing additional information about his family. I am at a dead-end with Wm. My mother grew up being told she was "Scotch-Irish". I personally believe that Wm and his family left Scotland for Ireland and immigrated to NC from there. I have not proven this theory, but I do research it as time allows.

I descend from Willis Boyd. My gr grandfather was son Burton, son of Jacob. Jacob was son of Willis. They were all in the NW Ark. area. I do not have my information with me at this time to give details. But I would like to exchange information with you.

I am a descendant of William McGregor Jr. b. abt 1755 in Warwick Co. VA and d. 1839 Warren Co., TN.
I have a considerable amount of information on this line beginning with his son Jehu b. 1796 in North Carolina.

My sources list William Jr.'s children to be:
Sally b. 1792
Richmond b. 1794
Jehu b. 1796
William b. 1802
Ezekiel b. 1810
all but Ezekiel were born in North Carolina.

I would love to compare notes and exchange information on this line. As you said, the internet sites are not very helpful as they have so much incorrect information and contradict each other. I've been trying to get this line straightened out for quite some time and would appreciate any and all help.

I also have the book titled "The Dodson Family of Warren County, Tennessee and Allied Families" by Catherine Gaffin Lynn which includes a section on the McGregors. I'll be happy to share information from it as well. William Jr. and Jesse Dodson came from Virginia together into Tennesse and were closely intertwined during the late 1700's and early 1800's.

Greetings from California! (Hello cousins, Bill & David.)

Trust you are all well. I'm forwarding a response that I received from our Society Secretary (Clan Gregor Society, Scotland), Ms Ishbel McGregor...I had e-mailed her regarding trying to find info on either Apion's Glen or Ossian Glen in Scotland, and she was kind enough to check in w/Dr. Hutcheson (as he does not have e-mail). It's purported that Rev. William McGregor (who came to the colonies to preach in the meeting houses from Scotland) was from Ossian's Glen. Larry, who is a genealogist & new member of our Western USA Chapter (CGS), has been helpful w/this research. He has info that possibly Apion's Glen is the correct location.

In 1994, while Doyle & I were in the Perthshire area, Dr. A. MacGregor Hutchison was kind enough to spend time w/us. At one point, he took us on a wonderful outing/day-trip to a great deal of MacGregor sights. He is learned in history & place names of Scotland. I've asked before about Ossian's Glen, or a place once known as Ossian's Glen. There is a Loch Ossian, which is high above Glen Lyon, one of the glens Gregor took us a tour through, and wonderful experience, I might add. In trying to pin point g-g-g-g-grandfather's origins, traveling every avenue is quite difficult. I still maintain that these MacGregor brothers (William, Bartlett, John & possibly one other, think Andrew) came from an area where they had an opportunity to study...surely one didn't just sail over from Scotland & start preaching in the colony meeting houses without some sort of education, even back in those times.

I would like to research further regarding the ancient town of Dull & a school/college, said to be the first seminary of education mainland Scotland (have not confirmed this). Dull apparently became a famous educational centre - mid centuries schools which was removed to Kunkeld - later St. Andrews.....this town was in the area of Glen Lyon, Rannoch area. Loch Ossian is to the northeast of this, if my memory serves me well.

Thanks for reading through....this is getting to be a lengthy saga on our illusive McGregors.

Gregor phoned me tonight (perhaps I should say last night) and I asked him about your query.

He has never heard of Apion's Glen but reminded me that there is a district called Appin just north of Oban and there is an area near Aberfeldy called Appin of Dull. Whether either of these have any connection with your Apion ........ We just don't know.

Gregor also informed me that part of what we call the Sma' Glen, between Crieff and Aberfeldy, is called Ossian's Glen. (Ossian was son of Fingal). Well! Just goes to prove we are never too old to learn.

I can relate to your comment about e-mails. Every time I sit down to try and get some work done, I get a great load of e-mails. Once I have answered them, there is no time left to do the work I set out to do. I'm not sure how to overcome this problem. Any ideas?

About a place once called/known as Ossian's Glen...perhaps it never existed and if it did, possibly, only a handful of MacGregor's knew it as such. Our time spent w/him during 1994, was indeed special, a highlight of our travels that year.

Thank you, yes! I did enjoy my break from the normal routine of life but unfortunately a back problem rather curtailed my activities and I have just been told by my chiropractor that the problem normally takes at least six months to settle. I shall just have to plod on as best I can.

Gregor does not have e-mail and is adamant that he never will. He's not even interested in having a computer, in spite of the enormous amount of work he does. He just passes most of it to me for typing!!!

I will certainly put your question to Gregor. I cannot help on this one as I have never heard of either Ossian's Glen or Apion's Glen. Perhaps he will be able to throw some light on it. He should be in touch with me very soon.

The census reports suggest that Mary Jane Stiles McGregor lived to at least the 1830 census. William J McGregor died in 1839 so by the 1840 census, neither individual appear alone or with their children. Not sure why Mary Jane was not enumerated with William in the 1800 Census in Nash County, North Carolina, but she delivered two children, one born in 1800 (Jehu) and one in 1805 (William Jr) so she was not dead.

Mike, this is in an effort to assist your quandry, and that of so many others, that have one of the many senior William McGregors as an ancestor in early America (1820 and before).

The files reveal three (3) separate William McG lines that were noted to be in early NC. It is possible, however and perhaps likely, that one or more of these three have a familial relationship. Hopefully, thru DNA testing we will begin to determine those relationships, if any exists.

I have chosen to designate these three Wm McG lines as follows: 1) "The Preacher", 2) "The Rebel" and 3) "The Warrick". Others have used the two first terms to describe their ancestor and I have selected the third term so that we have a clear distinction about whom we are speaking or writing.

THE PREACHER WILLIAM MCGREGOR

William McG, "The Preacher" is thought to have been b. @ 1735 in Scotland and is believed to have come to America "to preach in the meeting houses". Our earliest recognized record of the Preacher is with the Bute Co. NC Tax Roles for 1771. We also see mention of him in the 1774 minutes of the Kehuky Baptist Association, again in Bute Co. NC. Subsequently, he is noted on property deeds when he purchases land in Montgomery Co. NC. It is here that he is thought to have preached until his death in 1807.

We are informed that a grave marker exists in NC's Morrow State Park indicating he and his wife's death. Although we have no supporting document, one researcher indicates the wife to have been one Sarah Courtland. Another researcher, who has both observed the grave marker and taken a tracing of same, states that the years are not clear. So, the date of death for William McG the Preacher is in question.

We believe the Preacher had a son named William. This WILLIAM MC GREGOR is thought to have been b. 1755 in NC. He m. 1st Elizabeth Webb and 2nd Mary "Martha" Stiles. Wm the s/o the Preacher d. 1839 in Warren Co. TN. The children of this Wm McG are:

THE REBEL WILLIAM MC GREGOR

Mike, you and others, appear to descend from "The Rebel" Col. William McGregor. However, your 3 distance away on the 67 DNA markers with Robert "Bob" D. McGregor (tst kit # 29834), the brother to Carolyne (McG) Long, suggests a common ancestor exists between the two of you. That is further illustrated by Dr. Richard McGregor's "twig chart" appearing in his 2 Jan '10 posting on the MacGregor DNA Project site. See Note 1 below on last page.

This William McG, b. 1696 in Scotland (where unknown) is stated to have been "attained" in 1715 by the British, and therefore fled to America. See Note 2 on last page. Once settled in Northamption Co. NC he was given the title of Captain of a NC militia company. Upon meeting, the then Governor Gabriel Johnston, he was promoted to Colonel. See Note 3 on last page.

According to Francis Bobbit McGregor, deceased (see Note 4 below), the Rebel Col. Wm McG had two sons: William Bartlett McGregor b. 1730 and John McGregor b. 1740, both in Northampton Co. NC. This, among other information, was what Frank had graciously shared with me concerning the two sons:

THE WARRICK WILLIAM MC GREGOR

According to the 1790 Census for Northampton Co. this William McGregor is b. before 1766. He appears in the 1767-84 Warrick Co. VA Tax Lists. Further, a deed for 287 acres purchased on Jack Swamp in Northampton Co. NC indicated this William McG to be from Warrick Co. VA.

From his will dtd in Apr 1809 and a codicil in Nov 1810 we can determine that he had a wife named Nancy in 1809, but she is not mentioned in the 1810 codicil. Their children are determined to be:

1) William McGregor b. @ 1173 VA
2) Anthony McG b. @ 1774 VA m. Lydia; he d. 1824 NC
3) An unnamed female b. 1776-84 VA m. John Little
4) Nancy (McG) b. 1785-90 m,. 1st Williams and 2nd Hill

The son Wm McG b. 1773 VA first appears in Nash Co. NC as a witness on a 1797 deed. This Wm McG is head of household with family in the 1810 and 1820 census takings for the county. About 1824 he moves his family to Lawrence Co. AL. Before leaving Nash Co. NC a son William McG is born in 1803.

Mike, Though I see no direct connection to the the Warrick William McG line, you may find that you have a distant common ancestor with Scott McGregor (tst kit # 153532) who is descended from this line. Scott and his father William Albert McGregor have both participated in the MacGregor DNA Project. I would once again refer you to Richard's "twig" Chart # 4 mentioned above. You will find Scott on a line at about 11:55pm (on the clock), whereas you are at about 12:10 and Robert "Bob" D. McG at about 12:05. You and Bob are on a separate branch of the "twig" from Scott, but you probably have a distance match in your markers.

Note 2 from the World Book Encyclopedia. "Attainder was a legal term for the loss of civil rights by an outlawed person or a person sentenced to death. According to old English law, such a person lost his rights to property. His land and his personal belongings were taken from him. Because he was judged to have suffered 'tainting' (corruption of blood) he could not inherit property or leave propery to anyone. Parliament put an end to attainder in England in 1870..." We can speculate that this Wm McG was involved in the first Jacobite Uprising that took place in 1715 and thereby was attained.

Note 3 According to NC Archives, Vol II, both the Governor and Wm McG had been friends while they attended St. Andrews University in Scotland. We have no indication of when Col. William McGregor died.

Note 4 Frank McGregor, a descendant of Col. Wm McG, was a prominent attorney in Hillsdale TX (outside Waco). Unfortunately, he was killed in a fire at his home resulting from a gas explosion in late 1998 or early 1999. It is not known if his genealogical materials were extinguished by the fire at his home or whether they were in an office safe at the time of the explosion. My last contact with Frank was in Oct 1998 and at that time his law firm was McGregor, McGregor & Carmichael, Inc. Hillsdale, TX tel # 254.582.7337. I believe that his daughter was a practicing attorney in the firm.

24 Feb 2002: Could this "William" be father of William & John, cited by Catherine Gaffin Lynn? Is a tantalizing find by Carolyne McGregor-Long because familiar names are cited, William, John, Bartlett, et. al., however, it disturbs me that

(a) the traditional naming pattern of that time has been ignored and
(b) there is no mention of Virginia as home-places...DAH

Hello Cousins!

Just a wee e-mail to let you know that I've discovered some interesting info regarding a possible connection (place) w/our ancestors, the McGregor brothers...William, Bartlett, John....possibly another brother, whose name is unknown to me.

Over a year ago, at the Bakersfield Scottish Highland Games, I visited one of the usual vendors, Tea & Sympathy, who deal in some very fine, sometimes old books. Being a book lover, I rarely pass up an opportunity to check through the racks. There was one book that took my notice, not that it was fancy or bright, just a wee worn green book w/the title of "The Road to Rannoch and The Summer Isles". I had to have it, so paid over $20 to take it home. Being I'm truly a busy & scheduled person, I've just now gotten round to reading this book. The author is T. Ratcliffe Barnett. The book was printed in Great Britain by Turnbull & Spears, Edinburgh, 1st edition July 1924. I'll send more info later when I have time to find my pages (lost my marker).

What's exciting to me is to find some place where possibly our ancestors went to school. Speaking of Rev. William McGregor...we know he came to the colonies to preach in the meeting houses, he had collateral to make the journey to the new world & to purchase property at some point after getting here. Thus, he was not exiled from Scotland by force (it would seem) & not without another shirt in his bag, so to speak. Where did he get his schooling? Was it at his mother's knee? Possibly, however, rather doubtful as in those days, girls/women normally were not schooled. This place once called Ossian's Glen...where is it today? We do know there is an Ossian's Loch, which is higher up from Rannoch...but, is still in the same locale...mix this in w/Glen Lyon, south...not an impossible idea. I've always thought Glen Lyon played a role in this somehow, having been there, it's making more sense to me. There is a kirk (church) in Fortingal in Glen Lyon....but, what I've just read in this book, makes me wonder about another possibility. A place called Dull. Whether it's there today, I'm not sure, however, where Dull was, a church was built over a burial place of Adamnan (Saint), and a school & college - said to be the first seminary of education mainland Scotland. Dull became famous as an educational center, but in the mid centuries, the school was removed to Dunkeld, and later to St. Andrews.

If any of you have time to research any of this in regards to our line of MacGregors, pls do, & keep us all posted. This is the first "clue" I've found that feels right, in a long time.

Keep searching...we'll get over the pond & documented one of these days, I'm certain of it.

Lineage of the McGregors of Warren County, Tennessee

The following is derived from research done by Mary Elizabeth Barnes for The Wiseman Family and Allied Lines by Eugene M Wiseman, now deceased.

Little substantiated proof of the Warren County, Tennessee McGregor lineage exists, however researcher Mary Elizabeth Barnes believes that it appears the McGregors came to Warren County from Northampton County, North Carolina. Her assumption is based primarily on the fact that several families who intermarried with our line of McGregors also left Northampton County, North Carolina area and moved to Warren County.

Mary's research, published in The Wiseman Family and Allied Lines states; There are at least three William McGregor men listed in the 1790 census of North Carolina and two in southern Virginia. The William McGregor born about 1755 of Warren County is believed to be the son of a William McGregor, Sr. who was born between 1730-1735. This William Sr. also is assumed to have a son Richmond MeGregor.

The Wiseman Family book further states; The following information has been gathered in an attempt to solve this problem of the parentage of William McGregor of Warren County, without resolution. It is presented here so that the reader may draw his own conclusion.

The Will of John Gregory Jr., Charles County, Virginia, Westover Parish, dated 1776 names wife Martha Gregory, children Richmond Gregory and John Munford Gregory and brother William Gregory. William Christian was bondsman. (Martha Stiles McGregor is thought to be the name of William McGregor's wife.)

A William and a John Gregory were Revolutionary soldiers in the 6th Virginia Regiment. Bute County, North Carolina 1771

Tax List: William McGregor, Moses Curtis, Drury and John Christian, Green Hill, John Huckaby, James Huckaby, Thomas Huckaby, John Solomon, William Solomon, James Stiles, Thomas Webb, and William Webb. (Stiles and/or Webb is thought to be the name of William
McGregor's wife.)

Bute County, North Carolina Record Book A, 25 May 1772 Will states; William Solomon to William Solomon Jr. Gift of a negro man to be his at my death. Witness, John Edwards, William McGregor and Green Hill.

In Index to the 1790 Census of Northampton County, North Carolina, shows John McGregor, William McGregor and Flowers McGregor, along with Thomas Webb. By 1796 the above were joined by Green Hill and Rowland Ware. Also the 1790 Census in Montgomery County, North Carolina, shows William McGregor, Bartlett McGregor, Thomas Huckoby and Bennett Solomon.

John McGregor's will is in Montgomery County in 1794.

A William McGregor bought land in Montgomery County in 1782 and 1779, and in Anson County in 1778, although these deeds are not necessarily all to the same William McGregor.

In 1776 William McGregor was given a license to preach in Franklin (formerly Bute County) NC. He served as pastor of the Mouth of Uwharrie Baptist Church.

On 1 July 1778 William McGregor bought the first land of record in Anson County, North Carolina, from Henry Mounger.

In 1795, land was surveyed for William McGregor in Montgomery County, North Carolina

Richmond McGregor with 1 male under 10, 1 male 18-26, 1 female under 10 and 1 female 16-26

1830 Census, Warren County, Tennessee shows the following families:

Jehu McGregor, William McGregor, Jr, Ezekiel McGreggor, Richmond McGregor, Ezekiel McGregor, William McGregor and Willis McGregor

1836 Tax List, Warren County, Tennessee (Dist 4) lists: Jay McGregor (Jehu), William McGregor, Sr., Ezekiel McGregor, Richmond McGregor, William McGregor, Willis McGregor (Dist 9)

1840 Census, Warren County, Tennessee shows the following families: Ezekiel McGreggor, William McGreggor, Richmond McGregger, Jay McGreggor, Ezekiel McGreger (slave schedule), William J McGreggor and Willia McGregger

Mary Elizabeth Barnes' research closes with the following statement:

"It would appear that William McGregor and Richmond McGregor, age 70-80 in the 1830 Census, both of whom lived and died in Warren County, Tennessee, might be the sons of William McGregor, Sr. who was born between 1730 and 1735.

Need Information - Information I find that seems accepted suspect could be wrong.

Haven been told for years now that John McGregor, of Northampton Co., NC d. c. 1794, sp. In will named Mary was Mary(Polly) Flowers d/o Ransford Flowers of same county, who d. 1789.

William McGregor, of Northampton Co., NC, was married to a Sarah Flowers d/o Ransford Flowers and sister of Mary (Polly) Flowers above.

Just found what is in Ransford Flowers’ will which cast great doubt on this and on most of the information on the McGregor and Sandefur information found on the web for genealogy research.
Ransford Flowers will (1788) lists living children as:
Sarah Hardan (Hardin – husband maybe a John Hardin from some land records but not certain)
Polly Mitchell (husband probably Jesse Mitchell – from land records and he witnessed Ransford Flowers will.
Ann Flowers
Ransford Flowers
Elizabeth “Betsy” Flowers

He also mentions a grandson – William McGregor (only grandchild mentioned) – the executor of the will was John McGregor

These 2 wills are only 6 years apart. Ransford Flowers’ daughter Polly (assume this is Mary) in 1788 is married to a Mitchell – so very doubtful if she is the Mary sp of John McGregor found 6 years later in Johns will with 6 children 3 with married names.

Who is John McGregor’s wife Mary – is she a Flowers and if so who are her parents?
Who is William McGregor grandson of Ransford Flowers mentioned in his will – it appears he was his only McGregor grandchild maybe of a daughter who was dead by 1788…

Who is this William McGregor – he left property in his will which is called Jack Swamp. John McGregor (Megreger) (sp. Elizabeth according to deed) transferred property called Jack Swamp to William McGregor (Megreger) of Warwick Co., VA This was a 287 acre parcel which John McGregor (Megreger) had purchased from John Justice – is this the same piece of property and then was is the relationship of these men. William McGregor of Warwick Co., VA I have been told went to Warren Co., TN – or is he the William with a will stating he was of Northampton Co., NC?

Any Information to help sort this out with documentation would be appreciated. It seems that people put whatever they find on the web without noting that much is speculation and then if becomes urban legend and it will be very hard for people to know that there genealogy is accurate. This is not a good thing for those who love genealogy and are searching for truth. And then you have the nuts out there who are so excited that their DNA have shown them to trace back to Adam – please understand just what DNA can and cannot show. There is a McGregor genealogy on the web which is cited for source information and they have all sort of McGregor families mixed up and are a complete mess.

The William McGregor you mention as having left a portion of land called Jack Swamp is known as "The Preacher". He was licensed to preach in the American colonies in 1776. A hand written statement in the Sandy Creek Baptist Church records (Franklin County, N.C.) reads as follows: "At a meeting in conference Sandy Creek meeting house of June 1776, ordered that William McGregor have liberty to exercise his right in preaching the Gospel of Christ." At least from this time until his death, he was the pastor of the Mouth of the Uwharrie Baptist Church. He may have also pastored a the Fishing Creek Baptist Church in Bute Co., NC. Some of his descendents headed to GA.

It is believed, but not confirmed, that the McGregor family that settled for a time in TN were descendents of one William McGregor who d aft. 1786, known as William "The Rebel". Ironically, he seems to be the one who served as a Justice of the Peace until his resignation was accepted by the House of Commons of the North Carolina Legislature on November 30, 1786, and endorsed by the Senate on December 1, 1786.

I wondered if you've made any further progress on this line? I believe I descend from the Wm McG you mention, and have the following:

The senior WILLIAM MCGREGOR D. Bef 1815 NC was in Warrick Co. VA 1767-84 before moving his family to Northampton Co. NC prior to the 1790 Federal Census. A property transaction in 1767 is indicated when he buys land from a James Dancy. And, on the VA State Enumerations he appears in Warrick Co. for 1782 and 1784. There is a William McGregor in the Warwick County, VA 1782 enumeration with a family of 7 whites and 12 blacks (obviously prosperous and established).

He receives land (287 acres on Jack Swamp) in Northampton, NC, on 4 Mar 1776 deeded from John MeGreger and his wife Elizabeth (2nd wife for John?) to "Wm MeGreger, planter of Warwick Co, VA". (Deeds of Northampton, Co, NC 1774-1787). John McGregor is his neighbor on the 1790 census, and possibly his brother since John's will of 1794 mentions a brother, William. On 10 Dec 1789 he is a buyer of personal property at the estate sale of Ransford Flowers in Northampton Co. He is head of a household in that county for the 1790 census.

This Wm McG writes his will Apr 1809 with a codicil added in 1810. He dies before 15 Jan 1815 when his children agree that their brother Wm is authorized to sell property of the father; this is land on Jack Swamp. The property is sold to John Sandifer 11 Dec 1816.

In 1809, when the will is drawn, the senior Wm names his (second) wife Nancy (to be an executor with son Wm); the children named are: William, Anthony, Nancy, Alexander and Frances. An unnamed daughter (probably deceased), is one of the three oldest children thought to have been born in Warrick Co. VA. This daughter appears to have married a John Little, as a grandson Willis Little is named in an 1810 codicil to the will.

I have a close DNA match (FTDNA yDNA 35-marker, distance=2) to a claimed descendant of the John McGregor above, suggesting a common ancestor around this time. John and Wm are likely brothers or otherwise closely related. We both also a close match (FTDNA 35/67-marker, distance=1,2,3) to a large number of people with the Monroe surname, suggesting a linkage of some sort in the 1600's or 1700's, but I can't find anything in the paper trail that would otherwise link these two surnames.

I am trying to determine the parents of William T. McGregor (born abt 1798, married Mary "Polly" Allen - 1828) who 1st purchased land in Marengo County, AL in 1833. I believe his father might be the John McGregor (married to Nancy) who bought land there in 1824, but can't figure out which John this is. The 2 of them have ties to Wilson County, TN, which is where you will find Flowers McGregor. A Willis McGregor purchased land in Marengo County in 1825, but I believe that he is one of the Warren County, TN bunch. Lastly, who are the parents of Lucy Jane McGregor who marries Joseph Vaughn in Sumter County, AL in 1845? I am thinking that she is either a child of William T. McGregor (from a previous marriage), or his little sister.

This is interesting... The William who left the land in Jack Swamp was a planter of Warwick Co., VA - his will is from Northampton Co. and was for 287 acres on Jack Swamp in an area of a Quaker meeting house where as the Rev. William was from Montgomery Co and had taxed 500 acres - you have it documented that these two men are the same men?

William the Rebel as you call him - is he the Scot who was in NC from around the 1740's? who wouldn't sware allegence to England but worked with Gov. Johnson of NC?

you mentioned that John McGregor with wife Elizabeth that she was a second wife? Do you know who his first was would have been? Also do you know how old this William McGregor was when he died? You also indicate that this William McGregor's wife Nancy mentioned in his will was his second wife - do you know the name of his first wife? and who is the mother of his children listed in his will?

I am trying to sort through what I have on these lines and will try to post it here.

I am not convinced that John (wife Elizabeth) and John with widow Mary are one and the same people... But this line seems to be tied up with the Flower family and I am at a loss which William would be the grandson of Ransford Flower or by what name the mother of said grandson would have been.

The will indicates that William had a grandson of the name Little? do you know the name of his mother and father?

Has anyone ever found a will in Montgomery Co., NC for any McGregors?

Here is some information that might be relavant to your DNA match to the Monroe surname... from the Library of Virginia chancery records, Fauquier County, Virginia. Index# 1811-038.

John McGregor vs. Admr. of Daniel Monroe (for some reason this is indexed under John McGregor vs. Admr. of Dodd Monroe). Summary of relavant information is this: that Daniel Monroe died abt. 1789 in Fauquier County, Virginia leaving no children. His wife Mary was either deceased or died soon after her husband. John McGregor who proves to be a half-brother to Daniel Monroe, is the only surviving sibling or half-sibling. Chancery case not settled until 1811. This means that John McGregor and Daniel Monroe share a mother. To me, this also implies that this particular John McGregor was probably Virginia born, since his mother married twice and had children in Virginia.

This document can be viewed online @ Library of VA.

I ran across this while researching my own McGregor, John McGregor who married Mary Ridley Irby. They had at least two daughters; Martha Ann McGregor b.1833 and Catherine McGregor. Martha Ann McGregor married into my Henderson line in Person County, NC; but they lived in Halifax County, VA. There are records of John McGregor in Halifax County as well.

Any information about how my John McGregor ties into the larger McGregor line would be greatly appreciated!!
