    Hi David:

    I had a question about a reference on Leona's page, S11315.

It is a historical journal reference to a bastardy case involving Leona.

Is there a copy of this reference? If so, could I get a copy?

The historical society that made these journals had a fire back in 2015 so I was wondering if this reference was saved somewhere.

    Thanks!

'The Curtis Family of Warren County Tennessee' By Don Martini

The 1880 Warren census gives us another valuable clue. It shows that Delilah Curtis, age 77, and William Curtis, age 68, both born in North Carolina, were brother and sister. It also shows that their father was born at sea, their mother in Virginia.

Using the fact that two of Sarah’s heirs were brother and sister, and the fact that all the heirs had an equal share in her 30 acres, I have assumed that all the heirs were siblings, her children. By assuming that all the heirs were Sarah’s children, the genealogy would be:

____ Curtis, born at sea, married Sarah ____.born in Virginia about 1770. Their children were born in North Carolina between 1785 and 1812-1816. Mr. Curtis died by 1824, Sarah in late 1846 or early 1847.

Suffice to say that a check of all available North Carolina, Virginia, and Tennessee records to date has not yielded the name of Sarah’s husband. It also suffices to say that the Lynn Dodson book is absolutely incorrect in stating that Chesley et al were children John Jr. 9 and Rachel Curtis. Wiley Curtis, maybe. The deed and census records of Warren Counry clearly list John Jr,’s and Sarah’s heirs.

The Curtis Family of Warren County Tennessee By Don Martini

    Sarah Curtis

While John Curtis Sr. and his sons were trading in land on Barren Fork in the 1820s, there appeared in Warren County another Curtis family. On November 22, 1824, there was surveyed for Jay McGregor a tract of 99 acres on Collins River. The land bordered the lands of Patrick Hennessee, Elijah Dodson, William McGregor, and Jacob Martin) and included on its east side “a spring -made use of by the Widow Curtis. A survey of 20 acres for William McGregor done on September 18, 1826, was carried out with Jacob Martin and Chesley Curtis as chain carriers.

The 1830 census shows this new group of Curtises, who were not listed in 1820:

    p. 346 Rolen Ware
    Thomas Hennessee
    Richmond McGregor
    William J. Cartwright
    Chesley Curtis 200001-00001

    p. 360 Jay McGregor
    Sarah Curtis 00111-000040001
    William McGregor Jr.
    Ezekiel McGregor

More about this family comes to light through a series of deeds made in the 1840s. On March 21, 1841, Wiley McGregor sold to Henderson McGregor a large tract of land once owned by Jacob Martin. He also sold “one other tract of thirty acres adjoining the above and Ezekiel McGregor and William J. Stubblefield purchased of the heirs of. Sarah Curtis on which I now live.” The deed books also show that on April 6, 1847, Chesley Curtis sold to Wiley McGregor his interest in a tract of land which he had gained by descent. According to that deed he held equal and undivided interest in the tract, along with Elizabeth Melton, Amy Freeman,_____ Huckden, Margaret Freeman, Patsy Sanford, Delilah Curtis, Sarah Curtis, Priscilla Curtis, Charnel H.(Hight) Curtis, and William Curtis. The land lay in District 4 on Collins River, bordered on the north by Ezekiel McGregor, on the west by William Stubblefield, and on the south and east by Wiley McGregor (the tract once owned by Jacob Martin,, whose daughter, Rebecca, born TN, September 14, 1806, married Chesley Curtis in 1825). The 1836 tax list showed that Sarah Curtis owned 30 acres valued at $150.00. (In 1838, the tax list had the 30 acres in William Curtis’ name).

Thus the deeds show that Chesley Curtis and the others were heirs of Sarah Curtis. Some of the other heirs sold their interest in the 30 acres to Wiley McGregor. Vinson Sandford and wife Patty did so on September 8, 1847. Sarah Curtis (Jr.) did so. on September .20, 1848. Charnel H. Curtis did so on June 20, 1849. Elizabeth Melton did, so on July 1, 1849, in a deed attested to in Lincoln County, Tennessee. No deeds have been found for the other heirs.

Here’s some records on this family:

1836 tax list, District 4, Sarah Curtis (30 acres), William Curtis, Chesley Curtis, Charnel H. Curtis

1838 tax lists, District 4, William Curtis (30 acres), Chesley Curtis, Charnel H. Vinson Sandford

    l840 census:

    p. 364 Chesley Curtis 013101-200001001
    Sarah Curtis 00001-600021001
    William Melton 000001-20001
    p. 365 Vinson Sandford 1000101-0000101

1844, March 11 - election to sell school lands near Harrison’s Ferry. Held at the home of Audley Harrison, District 4. Voters:
Vinson Sandford, William Curtis, Wiley Curtis, Charnel Curtis.

Census records give us more information on the heirs of Sarah Curtis. First of all, the 1850 census gives us very little. Chesley Curtis, Charnel H. Curtis, Vinson Sandford, all are missing. Two of Chesley’s sons, Moses and Aaron, are shown. So is William Curtis, but his is data is wrong, based on later censuses. Here’s what it shows:

    p. 459 William Curtis 22 NC (should be age 38)
Mania 24 NC (should be age 32)
    Jolih H. 2 TN
    Martha M. 1 TN
    Priscilla 38 NC
Lila 38 NC (should be age 47)

Why this is in error is unknown. Later censuses correct the ages. Also why the other Curtis members were missed is not clear. They were also omitted from the 1850 agricultural census, leading me to believe that they had moved, at least temporarily, from the county. I’ve not found them in any state in 1850 as of this time.

One note before continuing. Note that among the voters in District 4 in 1844 was Wiley Curtis. He was also a witness to a deed made by Sarah Curtis Jr.-in 1848. He lived among Sarah’s heirs until his death in 1865. Born in Tennessee in 1815, Wiley may have been a nephew of Sarah Curtis.

The 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880 censuses give us these birthdates for Sarah Curtis’ heirs:

Elizabeth Melton b. NC 1785 (d. Lincoln County, Tn, March, 1860)
Patsy Sanford b. NC 1745 (died after 1860)
Chesley Curtis b. NC 1799 (tombstone says 8-6-1796, but all
    censuses show 1799-1800) d. 1866)
    Delilah Curtis b. NC 1803
    Charnel Hight Curtis b. NC 1805 (d. 1875)
Priscilla Curtis b. NC 1811 (based on 1850 census only)
    William Curtis b. NC 1812 (d. after 1880)
    Margaret Freemen ???????
    Amy Freeman ???????
    ___ Huckden
Sarah Curtis Jr. b. TN or NC, 1816 (if she married William B. Melton, as family story goes)

Posted by: Barbara Daniels (ID *****0362) Date: September 30, 2006 at 15:27:33

I have reached a brick wall in my Ray family. Joseph Marion Ray was living there in 1813 and then moved to AL. His father was John Ray,b. 1739 at Charleston, SC and d. 1813 at McMinnville, Warren Co. He was married to Catherine Manning.

Joseph was in Capt. Tait's M Infantry in War of 1814, along with his brother, Thomas Ray. They were at Horseshoe Bend.

Joseph also had two known uncles, Thomas Ray and Benjamin Ray.

One of his brothers had the following sons: John Ray, George Thomas Ray, Hiram Ray, Joseph William Ray. Joseph's brother Thomas did not have any sons.

Joseph was born 1 Mar 1770 for an age reference.

    Any help greatly appreciated!!!!!!!

John Ray/Rhea sent his five oldest male children to America. The spelling was to have changed when the boys came to America. SonWilliam is believed to have changed his name to Rhea and is usually reported to have settled in West Virginia or Eastern TN.

Surname spellings in Ireland are : Ray, Rea, Rhea. Information from A.Deason Smith: adeasons@bellsouth.net.

The IGI has him born about 1720 and marriedabout 1739. Mr. A. Deason Smith states that is is only a possibilityfor the ancestry of James Rea, Sr.. There is no proof as yet. Alsospeculation that John Rhea is descended from French HuguenotAncestory, again with no proof.

Indenture made the 26th day of March, 1751, between Hezekiah Thrower of Johnston County, North Carolina, and Joseph Wrenn of Surry County, Virginia for 37 pounds, conveying to Hezekiah Thrower, 195 acres beginning at upper Fork of the first great Creek above Christianna Fort, granted to John Ray, by patent bearing date of October 16, 1727.Witnesses were M. The IGI gives the birthdate (approximated) of about 1740, as the first child of John and Hannah. However, an old Rae (Ray) graveyard, not far from McMinnville, discovered by Thomas J. Barnes (information found in Tennessee Cousins, page 526) states: John Rae died February16, 1813, ages 74 years, Baptist Preacher. Nancy Cooper, daughter of J. M. Rae died June 1, 1843, aged 61 year; Mary Brazeal daughter of J.M. Rae died 1811, aged 42 years. After John Rea died in 1813, Moses Rae was executor of the estate, on April 8, 1816. The witnesses to his appointment were Daniel Payne and Uriah York..

    end of biography

Semore York pp 529 Randolph County History Book item 643.

Semore York (ca 1727-1783) was a loyal British subject, born in England about 1727 along with his brothers Henry, John, and
perhaps Thomas York. Semore is also recorded in the Colonial North Carolina records as Seymore, Seymoure, and Cemore York.
Their father Jeremiah York had emigrated from England with his family into the Pipe Creek settlement of Maryland between
Baltimore and Philadelphia in the early 1700's. By 1750 Jeremiah York and his three sons Henry, John, and Semore had migrated
into Granville County, NC, in what is now Randolph County, NC. Thomas York had also migrated into Granville County, NC.

The great awaking or Great Revival began about 1726 in New England. Mr. Shubal Stearns, a native of Boston, Massachusetts,
was bred a Presbyterian, but embraced the Baptist principles in Tolland, Connecticut. He was ordained March 20, 1751, by elders
of Stonington and New London, Conn., as a Separatists Baptist minister. The Philadelphia Association appointed in 1755 two
ministers to visit North Carolina "in the interest of evangelism." Rev. Shubal Stearns and Rev. Daniel Marshall with a few families
came to Orange County, North Carolina, from Cacapon near Winchester in Hampshire County, Virginia, in the fall following
General Braddock's defeat in November 1755. The Stearns and the Yorks all settled in the Sandy Creek and Mount Pleasant
Creek region of what is now northeast Randolph County. Rev. Shubal Stearns established the Sandy Creek Baptist Church in
1756 on land donated by Semore York.

As soon as they arrived, a little meetinghouse was built in 1756 with sixteen members. This was followed by the organization of
the Sandy Creek Association in 1758. Then a house of 30 feet by 26 feet was built in 1762 with about 40 families. One of their
    exhorters was Tidence Lane.

"It was the mother church, nay the grandmother church, and a great grand mother to 42 churches from which sprang 125
ministers. All the separate Baptists sprang hence; not only eastward toward the sea, but westward to Tennessee, towards the
great river Mississippi, but northward to Virginia and southward to South Carolina and Georgia" according to Morgan Edwards'
    1772 notebook.

Some of the Baptists were involved in the Regulator movement that later resulted in the Battle of Alamance on May 16, 1776.
Rev. Shubal Stearns and the Sandy Creek Association threatened to excommunicate members who disturbed the peace as
Regulators. But feelings for freedom from oppression ran very deep. The Sandy Creek Church reduced from 616 to fourteen
souls following the defeat at the Battle of Alamance and percussion of the Regulators by Governor Tryon.

Morgan Edwards wrote, "It is said that 1500 families departed since the Battle of Alamance and a great many more are
waiting…to follow." It is from this historical event and origin that the Southern Baptist and Primitive Baptist formed their
beginnings and had their greatest missionary growth throughout the South.

Soon after the Battle of Alamance, Rev. Shubal Sterns died 20 November 1771 and was buried in the Sandy Creek Baptist
Church Cemetery. There is a rough, stone gravemarker nearby in the same cemetery for Semore York. It reads "S Y, 8 Feb
1783" and is only a few feet northeast from the original church building site. The will of Semore York was probated in Randolph
    County in March 1783.

The North Carolina Colonial Records indicate Semore York was very active in the Revolutionary War activities and events
leading up to our Independence. On January 10, 1776, Governor Josiah Martin, last royal governor of North Carolina, issued the
    order:
    To…William Fields, James Hunter, Robert Fields, Jeremiah Fields, and Seymoure York, Esquires of the County of Guilford;
    Greetings:
I hereby grant to you power and authority to form the forces you shall so raise, into companies of fifty men each, and to appoint
one Captain, …and I do hereby give you…full power and authority to seize and take whatsoever may be necessary of arms,
ammunition, provisions, horses, and carriage for the subsistence and accommodation of His Majesty's faithful subjects…"

Semore York was a loyalist Tory, served a British Captain, who led 34 men into the battle of Moore's Creek Bridge near
Wilmington, North Carolina, on February 27, 1776. The battle lasted three minutes. Thirty of the Tories were killed or mortally
wounded and between 20 and 30 taken prisoners, among whom was his Excellency General Donald Macdonald, the aged
Highlander and sick leader of the Tories.

The British Royal government in North Carolina came to an end on the dark, twisting, swampy waters of Moore's Creek. During
this battle Capt. Semore York was taken prisoner and removed to Halifax, North Carolina, for several months. On April 1776 a list
of prisoners in the Halifax Goad include Semore York's name. On October 12, 1776, his wife Sylvania Aldridge York, petitioned
the Council of Safety, setting at Halifax, North Carolina, seeking his release in order to provide for his family. Semore committed
the worst possible act when he lead the king's troops against the patriots at Moore's Creek in 1776, yet he was eventually released
from prison, retained his property and received his citizenship. This indicates he was able to atone for his loyalty to the crown
during the early months of the war. It also indicates he possessed that rare ability of being able to stand firm in his convictions
without losing the respect of his opponents and his children, who were patriots.

Semore York and his wife Slvania Aldridge had ten children: Jeremiah York (ca 1752-1818) m. Sara Allred (ca 1760-1810); John
    York (ca1754-1805); Sarah York (1755-1816) m. John Welborn (ca 1750-1805); Dorcas York (ca 1757-) m. William Fields;

Elizabeth White; and Martha York (1772-1860) m. Edmund Hays (1760-1836)

    Notes:

James was inventoried in Goochland, Virginia in 1731.

George Alves of New Kent County, VA transported a James Bowling in 1700--but did James Bowling stay in New Kent (from Ernie Perry). Is he the same James Bolling who died 1730 and was inventoried by Stephen Hughes. Ernie thinks, but can't prove that he was and that James Bowling moved with the other Hughes to Goochland. Ashford Hughes bought 400 acres on thesouth side of James River on Bolling's Quarter Branch, on the branches of Muddy Creek, in Goochland County.

According to Ernie Perry: "I'm almost certain that our Bollings came at least through New Kent around 1700. Why? Stephen Hughes inventoried James Bowling's estate in 1730 [you had to be a relative or a debtor to that] and granted he could have been a debtor, but I don't think so..it was Ashford Hughes he was in debt to and it was Ashford Hughes that sold 150 acres on Muddy Cr. to Christopher Bolling for 10E in Goochland in 1743. He was in Goochland as early as September 1729 and on 25 August 1731. Asford Hughes owned 400 acres on the south side of the James River on Bollings Quarter Branch and the branches of Muddy Creek, along with John Macou [Michaux] and Daniel Wilmore.
