'The Curtis Family of Warren County Tennessee' By Don Martini

The 1880 Warren census gives us another valuable clue. It shows that Delilah Curtis, age 77, and William Curtis, age 68, both born in North Carolina, were brother and sister. It also shows that their father was born at sea, their mother in Virginia.

Using the fact that two of Sarah’s heirs were brother and sister, and the fact that all the heirs had an equal share in her 30 acres, I have assumed that all the heirs were siblings, her children. By assuming that all the heirs were Sarah’s children, the genealogy would be:

____ Curtis, born at sea, married Sarah ____.born in Virginia about 1770. Their children were born in North Carolina between 1785 and 1812-1816. Mr. Curtis died by 1824, Sarah in late 1846 or early 1847.

Suffice to say that a check of all available North Carolina, Virginia, and Tennessee records to date has not yielded the name of Sarah’s husband. It also suffices to say that the Lynn Dodson book is absolutely incorrect in stating that Chesley et al were children John Jr. 9 and Rachel Curtis. Wiley Curtis, maybe. The deed and census records of Warren Counry clearly list John Jr,’s and Sarah’s heirs.

The Curtis Family of Warren County Tennessee By Don Martini

    Sarah Curtis

While John Curtis Sr. and his sons were trading in land on Barren Fork in the 1820s, there appeared in Warren County another Curtis family. On November 22, 1824, there was surveyed for Jay McGregor a tract of 99 acres on Collins River. The land bordered the lands of Patrick Hennessee, Elijah Dodson, William McGregor, and Jacob Martin) and included on its east side “a spring -made use of by the Widow Curtis. A survey of 20 acres for William McGregor done on September 18, 1826, was carried out with Jacob Martin and Chesley Curtis as chain carriers.

The 1830 census shows this new group of Curtises, who were not listed in 1820:

    p. 346 Rolen Ware
    Thomas Hennessee
    Richmond McGregor
    William J. Cartwright
    Chesley Curtis 200001-00001

    p. 360 Jay McGregor
    Sarah Curtis 00111-000040001
    William McGregor Jr.
    Ezekiel McGregor

More about this family comes to light through a series of deeds made in the 1840s. On March 21, 1841, Wiley McGregor sold to Henderson McGregor a large tract of land once owned by Jacob Martin. He also sold “one other tract of thirty acres adjoining the above and Ezekiel McGregor and William J. Stubblefield purchased of the heirs of. Sarah Curtis on which I now live.” The deed books also show that on April 6, 1847, Chesley Curtis sold to Wiley McGregor his interest in a tract of land which he had gained by descent. According to that deed he held equal and undivided interest in the tract, along with Elizabeth Melton, Amy Freeman,_____ Huckden, Margaret Freeman, Patsy Sanford, Delilah Curtis, Sarah Curtis, Priscilla Curtis, Charnel H.(Hight) Curtis, and William Curtis. The land lay in District 4 on Collins River, bordered on the north by Ezekiel McGregor, on the west by William Stubblefield, and on the south and east by Wiley McGregor (the tract once owned by Jacob Martin,, whose daughter, Rebecca, born TN, September 14, 1806, married Chesley Curtis in 1825). The 1836 tax list showed that Sarah Curtis owned 30 acres valued at $150.00. (In 1838, the tax list had the 30 acres in William Curtis’ name).

Thus the deeds show that Chesley Curtis and the others were heirs of Sarah Curtis. Some of the other heirs sold their interest in the 30 acres to Wiley McGregor. Vinson Sandford and wife Patty did so on September 8, 1847. Sarah Curtis (Jr.) did so. on September .20, 1848. Charnel H. Curtis did so on June 20, 1849. Elizabeth Melton did, so on July 1, 1849, in a deed attested to in Lincoln County, Tennessee. No deeds have been found for the other heirs.

Here’s some records on this family:

1836 tax list, District 4, Sarah Curtis (30 acres), William Curtis, Chesley Curtis, Charnel H. Curtis

1838 tax lists, District 4, William Curtis (30 acres), Chesley Curtis, Charnel H. Vinson Sandford

    l840 census:

    p. 364 Chesley Curtis 013101-200001001
    Sarah Curtis 00001-600021001
    William Melton 000001-20001
    p. 365 Vinson Sandford 1000101-0000101

1844, March 11 - election to sell school lands near Harrison’s Ferry. Held at the home of Audley Harrison, District 4. Voters:
Vinson Sandford, William Curtis, Wiley Curtis, Charnel Curtis.

Census records give us more information on the heirs of Sarah Curtis. First of all, the 1850 census gives us very little. Chesley Curtis, Charnel H. Curtis, Vinson Sandford, all are missing. Two of Chesley’s sons, Moses and Aaron, are shown. So is William Curtis, but his is data is wrong, based on later censuses. Here’s what it shows:

    p. 459 William Curtis 22 NC (should be age 38)
Mania 24 NC (should be age 32)
    Jolih H. 2 TN
    Martha M. 1 TN
    Priscilla 38 NC
Lila 38 NC (should be age 47)

Why this is in error is unknown. Later censuses correct the ages. Also why the other Curtis members were missed is not clear. They were also omitted from the 1850 agricultural census, leading me to believe that they had moved, at least temporarily, from the county. I’ve not found them in any state in 1850 as of this time.

One note before continuing. Note that among the voters in District 4 in 1844 was Wiley Curtis. He was also a witness to a deed made by Sarah Curtis Jr.-in 1848. He lived among Sarah’s heirs until his death in 1865. Born in Tennessee in 1815, Wiley may have been a nephew of Sarah Curtis.

The 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880 censuses give us these birthdates for Sarah Curtis’ heirs:

Elizabeth Melton b. NC 1785 (d. Lincoln County, Tn, March, 1860)
Patsy Sanford b. NC 1745 (died after 1860)
Chesley Curtis b. NC 1799 (tombstone says 8-6-1796, but all
    censuses show 1799-1800) d. 1866)
    Delilah Curtis b. NC 1803
    Charnel Hight Curtis b. NC 1805 (d. 1875)
Priscilla Curtis b. NC 1811 (based on 1850 census only)
    William Curtis b. NC 1812 (d. after 1880)
    Margaret Freemen ???????
    Amy Freeman ???????
    ___ Huckden
Sarah Curtis Jr. b. TN or NC, 1816 (if she married William B. Melton, as family story goes)

____ Curtis, born at sea, married Sarah ____ born in Virginia about 1770. Their children, were born in North Carolina between 1785 and 1812/1816.

  1. 64.  Samuel Hillis, The Immigrant was born in 1707 in Londonderry, Ireland (son of John Hillhouse and Rachel LNU); died on 7 Aug 1782 in Salisbury, Rowan County, North Carolina; was buried in Thyateria Presbyterian Cemetery, Rowan County, North Carolina.

    Notes:

    Samuel Hillhouse (wife Ann Hillhouse)

Born 1707 FreeHall Londonderry Northern Ireland
Passed on 8/17/1782 (per registered NC will) SAMUEL HILLIS WAS BORN IN 1707,IN FREEHALL,DERRY IRELAND, TO JOHN AND RACHEL HILLHOUSE (JOHN 1655-1716)-(RACHEL 1667-1716).SAMUEL HILLIS WAS ABOUT 9 YEARS OLD WHEN HIS PARENTS DIED.

SAMUEL CAME TO AMERICA AS A YOUNG MAN LANDING IN PENNSYLVANIA. HE MEET AND MARRIED ANN LUCKEY, THE DAUGHTER OF ROBERT AND ISABLE LUCKEY OF LANCASTER CO. PENNSYLVANIA.The first time I find samuel hillis' name in print,is in the will of Robert luckey Ann hillis' father, in that he states that he leaves to his daughter ann the wife of samuel hillis, five shillings. ON THE 13th DAY OF APRIL 1754 ANN (LUCKEY ) HILLISES FATHER ROBERT LUCKEY WROTE HIS LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT,HE PAST AWAY THE 21st DAY OF NOV 1757,AFTER HIS DEATH SAMUEL ,ANN AND MEMBERS OF THE LUCKEY FAMILY SET OUT FOR " THE IRISH SETTELMENT" IN ROWAN CO. north carolina. I belive that samuel and ann hillis' sons Robert and sampson were either born in pennsylvania,or on the way to north carolina, because I don't find any record of samuel till he is granted land in north carolinain 1761. WITH SAMPSON BEING BORN IN 1753, AND ROBERT BEING BORN IN 1755.

The book the carolina cradle by Robert w. Ramsey states that the will of robert luckey, written in 1754in the martic township, lancaster co. pennsylvania, referred to sons hugh, john, andrew, james, robert and samuel and to daughters isbel the wife of william sleven, and ann the wife of samuel hillis. also mentioned was agnes luckey the wife of robert pendry. By 1762 john luckey, john luckey jr., joseph luckey, robert luckey, samuel luckey, william luckey, william sleven, alexander pendry and samuel hillis were all residents of the Irish settlement.

Arriving by way of the shenandoah valley from pennsylvania and maryland, these avid scotch-irish presbyterians settled in the western part of the present rowan co.(26 counties were finally carved out of the original county, the present county taking its shape in 1840). About this time the eastern part of the county was settled by germans of the reformed faith. Both groups kept strictly to themselves for over a hundred years.

THE COUNTY RECORDS OF ROWAN CO. NORTH CAROLINA (BOOK 5-PAGE 78) REVEALS THAT ON DECEMBER 21,1761 SAMUEL HILLIS AND MEMBERS OF THE LUCKEY FAMILY WERE GRANTED LAND IN ROWAN CO. NC BY THE EARL OF GRANVILLE;. SAMUEL HILLIS WAS GRANTED 640 ACRES OF LAND DESCRIBED AS BEING ON THE NORTH SIDE OF SECOND CREEK . THIS SECTION OF LAND WAS PAID FOR AT THE RATE OF TEN SHILLINGS FOR EACH 100 ACRES OF LAND,OR $7.80 FOR THE ENTIRE 640 ACRES.

AT THIS TIME IN ROWAN CO. NORTH CAROLINA MANY PEOPLE WERE DIVDED ON THE SUBJECT OF INDEPENDENCE. KING GEORGE HAD MANY LOYAL FOLLOWERS IN THE COLONIES; HOWEVER THE SCOTCH-IRISH IN EVERY COMMUNITY WERE ALMOST TO THE MAN FOR INDEPENDENCE. THEY HAD SUFFERED MUCH FROM BRITISH OPPRESSION IN IRELAND AND HAD COME TO AMERICA, THAT THEY MIGHT HAVE RELIGIOUS AND CIVIL LIBERTY.

All five of samuel hillis' sons Sampson, robert, john, samuel jr. and palser all fought in the war.Sampson fought in the continental line-revolutionary war. robert fought with co. B under gen. griffith rutherford army of north carolina and under col.francis locke reg. comm. and with capt.w.m wilson. samuel jr. fought under griffith rutherford 10th regiment of the continental army at the age of 16 yrs. john hillis served under capt. bell and was present when cornwallis surrender, and served under capt. hyskill. his brother palser also served in the war.

In 1782 samuel hillis wrote his last will and testimony, samuel hillis died August 7, 1782 he is buired in the cemetery of the Thyateria presbyterian church at mt. ulla in the mill bridge area of rowan co. north carolina.(ann luckey hillis is not buired beside him).

    IN HIS WILL SAMUEL HILLIS STATED THAT HE KNEW HE WAS WAS VERY SICK OF BODY BUT OF PERFECT MIND AND MEMORY, AND WHILE BEING IN THIS CONDITION, HE WONTED TO DISPOSE OF HIS WORLDLY POSSESSIONS AS FOLLOWS;

to his loving wife ann he bequeathed three cows, her mare, spinning wheel, bed clothes, and possession of the farm for her lifetime.

to my son sampson, one-third of the farm, the plow, mall and wedges, and one cow.

to my son samuel jr. ,one-third of the farm, the family house and improvements, three cows, mare.

to my son robert, one-third of the farm.

to my daughter elizabeth, her mare and saddle, three cows, her bed and furniture.

to my daughter ann, her white mare.

to my daughter martha, five shillings in hard cash.(65 cents)

in addition, samuel asked that he be giving a decent christian burial.

samuel didn't mention john or palser in his will.I belive john and palser left rowan co. north carolina in september of 1779,with Daniel Boone when he lead a large party of emigrants to kentucky.

NOW THAT THE WAR WAS OVER, AND SAMUEL SR. WAS DEAD,SAMUEL JR. HIS MOTHER,BROTERS AND SISTERS DISPOSED OF THE FAMILY FARM AND MOVED. THIS MOVED OCCURRED ABOUT 1786 AND TOOK THEM TO FAYETTE COUNTY ,KENTUCKY.

Hi my name is Ally and i am looking for information on a grandfather of mine by the name of William Logue Sr. I have no information on his birthdate or place of birth, i believe his wifes name is Martha Jane Edwards and she was born around 1730. They had a son named William Marrs Logue born 1778 in Virginia. Middle names often get passed down therefor they tend to play an important role in my family yet i have no clue where Marrs comes in. I heard that William Sr. may have died in a war when William Jr. was younger but i am still not positive. If any one can help me find information on either William Sr. or Martha Jane Edwards it would help a lot. I mostly need their parents names and so on. Thank you!!!

    http://genforum.genealogy.com/logue/messages/1142.html

Just started looking into the wifes family, I have found William Marrs Logue in Warren and Van Buren Counties in Tennessee. I know he was the sheriff in Warren county until the land he owned (135 acres) was annexed into Van Buren county. From what I have seen it looks like the elder Logue died in 1777 or 1778 during the Revolutionary War. I think I have found where his widow applied for his pension and it lists him as a sailor--www.cwss.com My wife is descended through Oliver. Her family is mostly still in Cass County Ill. Would take any info anyone wanted to share. Robert Simpson

The William Logue who served in the navy from Maryland during the Revolutionary War was married to a Martha, but he was not the father of William Marrs Logue. William Logue of Maryland received a Revolutionary War pension in Maryland in 1841, and his widow, Martha Logue was a resident of Baltimore Co., Maryland, when she applied for a widow's pension in 1855. I believe William Marrs Logue was the son of William Logue b. abt. 1752-1754, either in Pennsylvania or in Augusta Co., Virginia, d. 1789 in Botetourt Co., Virginia. William served in the Botetourt Co., Militia during the Revolutionary War. It appears that William married abt. 1775 and had his first child Elizabeth in 1775. William's wife Martha had a second marriage to John Fleming. in 1789.

William Logue, Sr. is cited as a Revolutionary Soldier in a listing from Hancock, Georgia. What's he doing in Georgia?

    THE HILLHOUSE FAMILY

    LONDONDERRY
    Northern Ireland

An American found tracing family roots can seem a peculiar oddity to people in the countries from where our ancestors immigrated. After all, many centuries of family lineage are still firmly grounded on the land of their ancestors. It may come as a comfort to those who stayed to know that once driven from those well-loved landscapes by persecution or famine, early immigrants landed in 18th and 19th Century America looking for the lay of familiar land. They named their parishes and towns in memory of the life they left behind, names like Derry and Londonderry, New Hampshire or hundreds of other place names brought from Britain, Europe and nearly all of the countries of the Earth. They brought their traditions and their passion in search of a chance to start a new life. The ties remain true whether spoken or silenced to just beneath the surface, ready to reveal itself again through the backward glance of the generations of descendants that follow.

According to Margaret P. Hillhouse's "Historical and Genealogical Collections Relating to the Descendants of Rev. James Hillhouse" (1924) Abraham Hillhouse of Artikelly, Ireland was born sometime before 1639 when he moved from Ayrshire, Scotland to Ireland as a landholder in the Ulster Plantation. The family resided in the Parish of Aghanloo for most of their 120 year stay in Northern Ireland, the townlands where their name appears in historical records include Ballycastle, Artikelly, Free Hall, Streeve Hill and at least 101 days held in siege in 1689 of the city of Derry.

Reid's History - 1644 quote "Abraham Hillhouse, of Ballycastle and a burgess of Limavady with a large number of people took the Oath of the Covenant in September 1644 at Ballycastle, and there met the Scottish Ministers on their return from Londonderry to Coleraine."

Abraham (1) and Janet Hillhouse had three children, Abraham (2), James (1) and John (1). His will is dated 1676 states he was "to be buried in such charges as my dear wife, Janet, and my eldest son, Abraham Hillhouse, shall think fit." Free Hall is first mentioned in the 1667 and was the birthplace that year of their son John.

    Tragedy for the family...

I am descended from Archibald and your post was not quite correct on what happened to him.
It was not Archibald Sr. but his son Archibald Jr. who was killed in the massacre. His wife Ann was initially captured, but escape, and received a frosty reception from relatives when she arrived to reclaim the family property from them.

Quite a few of Ann's relatives were also killed in the massacre. As for Archibald Jr. and Ann's children, this is a somewhat confusing point:
-- An oldest son named John is said in some accounts to have been killed, but in others to have escaped. I have seen some researchers claim to be his descendants.
-- A baby was kidnapped and eventually killed. One version has the baby killed immediately when Ann escaped. Another has a Shawnee family adopting the child, but killing it a few years later. Both versions describe a gruesome death by the child's head being bashed in.
-- Jane Clenndennin was the young daughter of Archibald Jr. and Ann, who was captured by the Shawnees. She was held captive by near Pittsburg for nine years. At the age of 14 she was released in a hostage swap or some such arrangement. According to one version, she was with child and Ann intially would not accept her as her daughter.

Jane married a Mr. Davis. Her daughter Mary Gray Davis (wife of Congressman Ballard Smith of Virginia) is my direct ancestor.

Since one version of the story implies that Jane's oldest child was not really a Davis, I would be very interested in learning more about whether that is accurate and whether that was Mary or an older sibling (half-sibling).
