    Notes:

    Samuel Hillhouse (wife Ann Hillhouse)

Born 1707 FreeHall Londonderry Northern Ireland
Passed on 8/17/1782 (per registered NC will) SAMUEL HILLIS WAS BORN IN 1707,IN FREEHALL,DERRY IRELAND, TO JOHN AND RACHEL HILLHOUSE (JOHN 1655-1716)-(RACHEL 1667-1716).SAMUEL HILLIS WAS ABOUT 9 YEARS OLD WHEN HIS PARENTS DIED.

SAMUEL CAME TO AMERICA AS A YOUNG MAN LANDING IN PENNSYLVANIA. HE MEET AND MARRIED ANN LUCKEY, THE DAUGHTER OF ROBERT AND ISABLE LUCKEY OF LANCASTER CO. PENNSYLVANIA.The first time I find samuel hillis' name in print,is in the will of Robert luckey Ann hillis' father, in that he states that he leaves to his daughter ann the wife of samuel hillis, five shillings. ON THE 13th DAY OF APRIL 1754 ANN (LUCKEY ) HILLISES FATHER ROBERT LUCKEY WROTE HIS LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT,HE PAST AWAY THE 21st DAY OF NOV 1757,AFTER HIS DEATH SAMUEL ,ANN AND MEMBERS OF THE LUCKEY FAMILY SET OUT FOR " THE IRISH SETTELMENT" IN ROWAN CO. north carolina. I belive that samuel and ann hillis' sons Robert and sampson were either born in pennsylvania,or on the way to north carolina, because I don't find any record of samuel till he is granted land in north carolinain 1761. WITH SAMPSON BEING BORN IN 1753, AND ROBERT BEING BORN IN 1755.

The book the carolina cradle by Robert w. Ramsey states that the will of robert luckey, written in 1754in the martic township, lancaster co. pennsylvania, referred to sons hugh, john, andrew, james, robert and samuel and to daughters isbel the wife of william sleven, and ann the wife of samuel hillis. also mentioned was agnes luckey the wife of robert pendry. By 1762 john luckey, john luckey jr., joseph luckey, robert luckey, samuel luckey, william luckey, william sleven, alexander pendry and samuel hillis were all residents of the Irish settlement.

Arriving by way of the shenandoah valley from pennsylvania and maryland, these avid scotch-irish presbyterians settled in the western part of the present rowan co.(26 counties were finally carved out of the original county, the present county taking its shape in 1840). About this time the eastern part of the county was settled by germans of the reformed faith. Both groups kept strictly to themselves for over a hundred years.

THE COUNTY RECORDS OF ROWAN CO. NORTH CAROLINA (BOOK 5-PAGE 78) REVEALS THAT ON DECEMBER 21,1761 SAMUEL HILLIS AND MEMBERS OF THE LUCKEY FAMILY WERE GRANTED LAND IN ROWAN CO. NC BY THE EARL OF GRANVILLE;. SAMUEL HILLIS WAS GRANTED 640 ACRES OF LAND DESCRIBED AS BEING ON THE NORTH SIDE OF SECOND CREEK . THIS SECTION OF LAND WAS PAID FOR AT THE RATE OF TEN SHILLINGS FOR EACH 100 ACRES OF LAND,OR $7.80 FOR THE ENTIRE 640 ACRES.

AT THIS TIME IN ROWAN CO. NORTH CAROLINA MANY PEOPLE WERE DIVDED ON THE SUBJECT OF INDEPENDENCE. KING GEORGE HAD MANY LOYAL FOLLOWERS IN THE COLONIES; HOWEVER THE SCOTCH-IRISH IN EVERY COMMUNITY WERE ALMOST TO THE MAN FOR INDEPENDENCE. THEY HAD SUFFERED MUCH FROM BRITISH OPPRESSION IN IRELAND AND HAD COME TO AMERICA, THAT THEY MIGHT HAVE RELIGIOUS AND CIVIL LIBERTY.

All five of samuel hillis' sons Sampson, robert, john, samuel jr. and palser all fought in the war.Sampson fought in the continental line-revolutionary war. robert fought with co. B under gen. griffith rutherford army of north carolina and under col.francis locke reg. comm. and with capt.w.m wilson. samuel jr. fought under griffith rutherford 10th regiment of the continental army at the age of 16 yrs. john hillis served under capt. bell and was present when cornwallis surrender, and served under capt. hyskill. his brother palser also served in the war.

In 1782 samuel hillis wrote his last will and testimony, samuel hillis died August 7, 1782 he is buired in the cemetery of the Thyateria presbyterian church at mt. ulla in the mill bridge area of rowan co. north carolina.(ann luckey hillis is not buired beside him).

    IN HIS WILL SAMUEL HILLIS STATED THAT HE KNEW HE WAS WAS VERY SICK OF BODY BUT OF PERFECT MIND AND MEMORY, AND WHILE BEING IN THIS CONDITION, HE WONTED TO DISPOSE OF HIS WORLDLY POSSESSIONS AS FOLLOWS;

to his loving wife ann he bequeathed three cows, her mare, spinning wheel, bed clothes, and possession of the farm for her lifetime.

to my son sampson, one-third of the farm, the plow, mall and wedges, and one cow.

to my son samuel jr. ,one-third of the farm, the family house and improvements, three cows, mare.

to my son robert, one-third of the farm.

to my daughter elizabeth, her mare and saddle, three cows, her bed and furniture.

to my daughter ann, her white mare.

to my daughter martha, five shillings in hard cash.(65 cents)

    THE HILLHOUSE FAMILY

    LONDONDERRY
    Northern Ireland

An American found tracing family roots can seem a peculiar oddity to people in the countries from where our ancestors immigrated. After all, many centuries of family lineage are still firmly grounded on the land of their ancestors. It may come as a comfort to those who stayed to know that once driven from those well-loved landscapes by persecution or famine, early immigrants landed in 18th and 19th Century America looking for the lay of familiar land. They named their parishes and towns in memory of the life they left behind, names like Derry and Londonderry, New Hampshire or hundreds of other place names brought from Britain, Europe and nearly all of the countries of the Earth. They brought their traditions and their passion in search of a chance to start a new life. The ties remain true whether spoken or silenced to just beneath the surface, ready to reveal itself again through the backward glance of the generations of descendants that follow.

According to Margaret P. Hillhouse's "Historical and Genealogical Collections Relating to the Descendants of Rev. James Hillhouse" (1924) Abraham Hillhouse of Artikelly, Ireland was born sometime before 1639 when he moved from Ayrshire, Scotland to Ireland as a landholder in the Ulster Plantation. The family resided in the Parish of Aghanloo for most of their 120 year stay in Northern Ireland, the townlands where their name appears in historical records include Ballycastle, Artikelly, Free Hall, Streeve Hill and at least 101 days held in siege in 1689 of the city of Derry.

Reid's History - 1644 quote "Abraham Hillhouse, of Ballycastle and a burgess of Limavady with a large number of people took the Oath of the Covenant in September 1644 at Ballycastle, and there met the Scottish Ministers on their return from Londonderry to Coleraine."

Abraham (1) and Janet Hillhouse had three children, Abraham (2), James (1) and John (1). His will is dated 1676 states he was "to be buried in such charges as my dear wife, Janet, and my eldest son, Abraham Hillhouse, shall think fit." Free Hall is first mentioned in the 1667 and was the birthplace that year of their son John.
