    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Religion: Baptist Preacher
    • Alt Birth: 1730-1735, (Perthshire) Scotland
    • Probate: 4 Oct 1839, Warren County, Tennessee

    Notes:

Reverend William McGregor (the "Fiery Old Scots Preacher") was born about 1730-35 probably in Scotland. No records have been found as to when he immigrated to America, but he first appears in North Carolina in 1771 on the Bute County North Carolina tax roll, and was mentioned in the Kehuky Baptist Association minutes in 1774.

He was ordained to preach in June 1776 in Franklin County.

He was the organizing pastor of Mouth of Uwharrie Baptist Church in 1780 in Montgomery County North Carolina.

It is believed by some that when William came to America he was joined by two brothers, John McGregor and Bartlett McGregor, and in fact there are a John McGregor and a Bartlett McGregor in North Carolina, but no evidence has surfaced that proves they are William's brothers.

William purchased land in Anson County in 1778 lying southwest of the PeeDee River near the mouth of Attaway Branch.

He paid taxes in 1780 and 1782 for five hundred acres of land in Montgomery County in the same location. That land is now part of Morrow Mountain State Park in western Montgomery County.

Some internet sites say that William married Sarah (Molly) Flowers, but I have not seen evidence to verify the marriage. The John McGregor referenced above, lived in Northampton County North Carolina and is said to have married Mary Flowers, and in his will his wife was named Mary and he had a son named Flowers. If William and John were brothers, perhaps they married sisters.

Rev. William McGregor and his wife are probably buried in the cemetery above the Kron Cemetery and is called the McGregor Cemetery at the Morrow Mountain State Park.

Rev. William died about 1804/5; it is not known when his wife died but probably around the same time as she was alive in the 1800 census.

There are many internet sites that have confused Rev. William, Sr. with his son William, Jr.

There are sites that say Bartlett McGregor is Rev. William's brother, and others that say Bartlett is William's son.

Some sites say Ezekiel and Willis are the sons of William, Jr. Also, Rev. William's daughters have never been addressed.

Let's discuss the children of Rev. William McGregor, Sr.

1790 Census Montgomery County North Carolina (names spelled Megrigler) (pg 413)
    William McGregor, Sr.
3 males 16+ (Sr. age abt 45-50, Jr. and ?)
2 males under 16 (Ezekiel and Willis)
3 females (Sr. wife, Jr. wife Mary Jane Stiles,
    Jr. daughter Mary Ann)
    4 slaves

    Bartlett McGregor
    1 male 16+ (Bartlett)
1 male under 16 (Harris McGregor)
2 females (wife Anne Harris McGregor and 1st child Avrilla)

1800 Census Montgomery County North Carolina (individual spelling below) (pg 520)
    William Megriger, Sr.
1 male over 45 (William Sr. aged 65-70)
2 males 16-26 (Ezekiel and Willis)
1 female over 45 (Sr. wife)
    6 slaves

    William Megriger, Jr.
    1 male 26-45 (Jr.)
    1 female 26-45 (wife)
    5 children

    Bartlett Megreger
    1 male 26-45 (Bartlett)
    1 female (wife)
    7 children

There is also a William Megriger aged 16-26 and wife on page 501. Could this be the male living in McGregor household in 1790? I don't think it is William Jr.'s son as he named a child William b. in 1805.

By 1810 census there were no McGregors in Montgomery County.

I have not researched any of William Sr.'s grandchildren but have relied on information contained in web sites.

In the 1790 and 1800 censuses, the names seem to have been put in a loose alphabetical order so we don't know how close together they lived to one another.

Bartlett McGregor moved to Stanly County North Carolina where he died .

William, Jr., Ezekiel and Willis moved to Warren County, Tennessee.

William McGregor, Jr. is the son of Rev. William McGregor, Sr. and was probably born between 1755 to 1770 either in Scotland or America and is probably the first son.

I think Bartlett McGregor is the son not the brother of Rev. William McGregor, Sr. William Sr. could have had a brother named Bartlett and he could have come to America, but is out of the picture by the above time frame.

Ezekiel and Willis b. 26 Nov. 1784 are the sons of William Sr. There could have been other sons who were out of the house or not living by the 1790 census.

There are web sites that say Mary Ann McGregor is a child of Rev. William McGregor, Sr. I believe she is the child of William McGregor, Jr. and his wife Mary Jane Stiles McGregor.

Any daughters of Rev. William McGregor, Sr. are probably married by the time of the 1790 census.

I have been told that a daughter named Susan married and moved to Rowan County North Carolina.

There is another who I believe is the daughter of Rev. William McGregor, Sr., and her name is Martha McGregor and she is my ancestor.

William Boyd was 16 years old when he joined the Rowan County North Carolina militia in 1777. He lived in Rowan County, but I have not been able to find his father among the Boyds living there. In his Revolutionary War pension file, he states that he served in the Revolutionary War with Bartlett McGregor. In 1784 he was living in his fatheras house when it burned down. I do not know where William was living in the 1790 census, but I believe he and Martha McGregor were married by this time. On March 18, 1794 William Boyd enters 100 acres great glade of Mountain Creek, border on McGehe. This land lies next to Rev. William McGregoras 500 acres. Also, McGehe is another name for McGregor, although it is usually spelled McGeehee. In the 1800 Montgomery County North Carolina census William Boyd and Martha McGregor Boyd are listed on page 518 as being age 26-45 with 1 male and 4 females under 10.

About 1808 when the McGregors moved to Warren County, Tennessee, William and Martha Boyd went with them. William states in his pension file that locations he lived after his service were Montgomery County, North Carolina, Warren County, Tennessee, Lauderdale County, Alabama, McNairy County, Tennessee, and Washington County, Arkansas where he died. Other Boyds show up in Warren County as well. The McGregors and Boyds are in the 1812 tax list of Warren County, Tennessee. Other families that traveled to Warren County from Montgomery County were Ware, Rowland, Martin, and Burleson.

I donat know the names or the fate of any of William and Martha McGregor Boydas children before 1800; the ones I do know about are McGregor b. 1804, William b. 1806, Willis b. 1808, Ezekiel b. 1811, Martha b. 1812 and another daughter I have not found as of yet. If anyone wants additional information regarding William and Martha Boyd please contact me directly.

The above is a compilation of my own research, web sites, and other sources. I would like feedback on what I have written. If you disagree with my conclusions, please respond and give your reasons and we can have an online discussion. And by all means please respond if you have additional information or know where we can find proof documents. There is so much misinformation on the internet, I thought by doing this we can all get it straight.

I found this very enjoyable and interesting. It looks like you have done a lot of work and research. I appreciate that and your sharing with this site.

I have not done any original work on this family, but, alas, have accepted what I have found that others have done. Now, I will have to find time to retrace your steps. :) I would appreciate any other information you might have to share.

I am a descendant of Avie McGregor and Benjamin Marks. To the best of my knowledge, Avie is William's granddaughter, a daughter of his son Ezekiel McGregor.

Thank you for your comments. I wish there were more records in North Carolina that had survived the centuries.

The MacGregor Clan in Scotland was a warring bunch and one of their favorite foes was the Clan Campbell. However, the Campbells were more political and were able to obtain legal grants for the MacGregor lands. This was a time when religious conflicts between the Catholics and the Protestant Crown of England was at its height. Several clans of MacGregors fought in the Jacobite rebellion for Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1745. On April 3, 1603, the MacGregor clan was proscribed and the name MacGregor was outlawed. The members of the clan were forced to take another surname and hide among the other clans; they were prosecuted and persecuted and were prohibited from carrying any weapon. The procription was lifted a few times, but was almost immediately put back in place. It wasnat until 1775 until the proscription was finally lifted for good. During this turbulent time we started seeing variations of the MacGregor name; the name McGeehee was one of those variations. There are still McGeehees in the United States today.

William MacGregor was a boy during the Jacobite rebellion. Hundreds of MacGregors left Scotland for America or for Ireland and then some of those came to America. Because Williamas name was outlawed, I doubt we will ever be able discover where in Scotland he lived. I have been told that most ships coming into Virginia from Scotland did not preserve the names of their passengers so that information is lost to us.

Information I have on Ezekiel is he married Sarah Ware (twin to Willisa wife) and he died on 9/23/1856 in Warren Co. Tennessee. Children were:
    Temperance
    Willis Nard
    Jason
    Jemima
    Wiley A.
    Avie
    Henderson
    Clinton
    Susan

Can you confirm the above info as correct. Thanks.

I also want to ask you about Avie. Do you know if her name was Avie or if that is a nickname?
    Thanks for your reply.
    Dixie

I really enjoy the historical information. It makes for interesting reading when combined with the family tree.

Avie is the name on her gravestone in Bell County, Texas.

The names of Ezekiel's children are the ones that I have, but I must admit I copied them from other sources and have not verified them. (I have been working on another side of my family.) The name Ezekiel McGregor Marks was given to Avie's son. He was always called "Mack" Marks. His grandson, my grandfather, was named Ezekiel Mack Hale.

The only information I have on Avie is below and was copied from the county history book for Bell County, Texas. It was submitted by a member of her family, George Huckabee.

    AVIE MCGREGOR MARKS HUCKABEE
    (March 6, 1819-October 9, 1897)

Avie McGREGOR was born in Warren County, Tennessee, on March 6, 1819, the daughter of Ezekiel and Sarah Ware McGREGOR. She married Benjamin MARKS in the mid 1830s and had two sons: James H. and Ezekiel McGregor "Mack".
A widow, she married Bartlett HUCKABEE in either Pontotoc County, Mississippi, or Middle Tennessee. Marriage records are not available for these counties for those years.
Avie and Bartlett HUCKABEE had three children: Jason, Charlotte Ann and Martha T. While in Mississippi, the Huckabees were members of the Laodicea Primitive Baptist Church where he was a deacon and often a delegate to the associational meetings. A farmer in Mississippi, Huckabee
also was a member of the state militia in 1864. This group was made up of older men of the home guard. The two Marks sons also served in the Confederate Army, but Jason was too young to serve.
After the end of the Civil War, the Huckabee family, in company with several Wilson families, left Mississippi to come to Wilson Valley in Bell County. Bartlett and Avie moved their church letter to Little Flock Primitive Baptist Church, but were later charter members of Mount Vernon Primitive Baptist Church, located near present Taylor's Valley.
Bartlett Huckabee died in Wilson Valley on March 10, 18??(my error). Avie also died in Wilson Valley. Their marked graves as well as their children, in-laws, and most of their grandchildren are in the Wilson Valley Cemetery.

Much of this information came from a document that my great uncle provided to my mother many years ago. I can verify much of the Pontotoc Co, MA information regarding the descendents of Ezekiel McGregor and his wife. However, my information does indicate that Wm did marry Sarah, but confusion arises that many people refer to her as "Molly", which is not the nickname for Sarah, but for Mary. My mother's name was Sarah. It would not be unusual for Wm to have married Mary's sister, as his twin sons married twin sisters. I would be interested in sharing additional information about his family. I am at a dead-end with Wm. My mother grew up being told she was "Scotch-Irish". I personally believe that Wm and his family left Scotland for Ireland and immigrated to NC from there. I have not proven this theory, but I do research it as time allows.

    Dixie,
I am a descendant of William McGregor Jr. b. abt 1755 in Warwick Co. VA and d. 1839 Warren Co., TN.
I have a considerable amount of information on this line beginning with his son Jehu b. 1796 in North Carolina.

My sources list William Jr.'s children to be:
    Sally b. 1792
    Richmond b. 1794
    Jehu b. 1796
    William b. 1802
    Ezekiel b. 1810
all but Ezekiel were born in North Carolina.

I would love to compare notes and exchange information on this line. As you said, the internet sites are not very helpful as they have so much incorrect information and contradict each other. I've been trying to get this line straightened out for quite some time and would appreciate any and all help.

I am so sorry. I must have overlooked your post or I would have replied sooner!
I'll be happy to send you a copy of my McGregor GEDCOM. Email me at janzgenes@yahoo.com and I'll do it immediately.

I also have the book titled "The Dodson Family of Warren County, Tennessee and Allied Families" by Catherine Gaffin Lynn which includes a section on the McGregors. I'll be happy to share information from it as well. William Jr. and Jesse Dodson came from Virginia together into Tennesse and were closely intertwined during the late 1700's and early 1800's.

Again, I apologize for missing your post and not responding sooner.

Greetings from California! (Hello cousins, Bill & David.)

Trust you are all well. I'm forwarding a response that I received from our Society Secretary (Clan Gregor Society, Scotland), Ms Ishbel McGregor...I had e-mailed her regarding trying to find info on either Apion's Glen or Ossian Glen in Scotland, and she was kind enough to check in w/Dr. Hutcheson (as he does not have e-mail). It's purported that Rev. William McGregor (who came to the colonies to preach in the meeting houses from Scotland) was from Ossian's Glen. Larry, who is a genealogist & new member of our Western USA Chapter (CGS), has been helpful w/this research. He has info that possibly Apion's Glen is the correct location.

In 1994, while Doyle & I were in the Perthshire area, Dr. A. MacGregor Hutchison was kind enough to spend time w/us. At one point, he took us on a wonderful outing/day-trip to a great deal of MacGregor sights. He is learned in history & place names of Scotland. I've asked before about Ossian's Glen, or a place once known as Ossian's Glen. There is a Loch Ossian, which is high above Glen Lyon, one of the glens Gregor took us a tour through, and wonderful experience, I might add. In trying to pin point g-g-g-g-grandfather's origins, traveling every avenue is quite difficult. I still maintain that these MacGregor brothers (William, Bartlett, John & possibly one other, think Andrew) came from an area where they had an opportunity to study...surely one didn't just sail over from Scotland & start preaching in the colony meeting houses without some sort of education, even back in those times.

I would like to research further regarding the ancient town of Dull & a school/college, said to be the first seminary of education mainland Scotland (have not confirmed this). Dull apparently became a famous educational centre - mid centuries schools which was removed to Kunkeld - later St. Andrews.....this town was in the area of Glen Lyon, Rannoch area. Loch Ossian is to the northeast of this, if my memory serves me well.

Thanks for reading through....this is getting to be a lengthy saga on our illusive McGregors.

    All the best,
    Carolyne McGregor Long (CGS/ACGS)

    Dear Carolyne,

Gregor phoned me tonight (perhaps I should say last night) and I asked him about your query.

He has never heard of Apion's Glen but reminded me that there is a district called Appin just north of Oban and there is an area near Aberfeldy called Appin of Dull. Whether either of these have any connection with your Apion ........ We just don't know.

Gregor also informed me that part of what we call the Sma' Glen, between Crieff and Aberfeldy, is called Ossian's Glen. (Ossian was son of Fingal). Well! Just goes to prove we are never too old to learn.

I can relate to your comment about e-mails. Every time I sit down to try and get some work done, I get a great load of e-mails. Once I have answered them, there is no time left to do the work I set out to do. I'm not sure how to overcome this problem. Any ideas?

    Slainte

    Ishbel.

    Dear Ishbel,

Do trust your back problem has improved greatly. I certainly can relate on that one, having some serious issues with mine. I think I probably already knew, in the back of my mind, that Gregor did not have or want computer...some days I'm with him on that. ha! Seems I'm always in hurry due to schedules, family & the like, and everytime I get on-line, there's a mountain of e-mails to sort through. My goodness, technology is getting too fast for me.

About a place once called/known as Ossian's Glen...perhaps it never existed and if it did, possibly, only a handful of MacGregor's knew it as such. This may be a mystery which will stay just that, a mystery. Do appreciate your help and pls do tell Gregor hello for me. Our time spent w/him during 1994, was indeed special, a highlight of our travels that year.

Best to you and yours, aye.
    Carolyne

    Dear Carolyne,

Thank you, yes! I did enjoy my break from the normal routine of life but unfortunately a back problem rather curtailed my activities and I have just been told by my chiropractor that the problem normally takes at least six months to settle. I shall just have to plod on as best I can.

Gregor does not have e-mail and is adamant that he never will. He's not even interested in having a computer, in spite of the enormous amount of work he does. He just passes most of it to me for typing!!!

I will certainly put your question to Gregor. I cannot help on this one as I have never heard of either Ossian's Glen or Apion's Glen. Perhaps he will be able to throw some light on it. He should be in touch with me very soon.

    Yours Aye,
    Ishbel.

    Dear Ishbel,

Hope this finds to well & that you returned home from your brief holiday very refreshed. It's work day for me, so must rush along. I'm hoping that you might be able to help me w/a wee question for Gregor Hutcheson. If he has e-mail, I do not have his address, so am inquiring by way of you as I believe you have contact w/him on a fairly regular basis. Would you be so kind to ask Gregor (or perhaps you know this yourself)... is there now or was there ever an Apion's Glen, Scotland? I have new info on my mysterious Rev William McGregor, reportedly from Ossian's Glen, Scotland, & the possibility that it is not such, but Apion's Glen. Sorry, my curiosity has gotten the better of me. I know you are tremendously busy, but should you get the chance, I would appreciate hearing from you on this very much.

    Best wishes,

The census reports suggest that Mary Jane Stiles McGregor lived to at least the 1830 census. William J McGregor died in 1839 so by the 1840 census, neither individual appear alone or with their children. Not sure why Mary Jane was not enumerated with William in the 1800 Census in Nash County, North Carolina, but she delivered two children, one born in 1800 (Jehu) and one in 1805 (William Jr) so she was not dead.

Mike, this is in an effort to assist your quandry, and that of so many others, that have one of the many senior William McGregors as an ancestor in early America (1820 and before).

The files reveal three (3) separate William McG lines that were noted to be in early NC. It is possible, however and perhaps likely, that one or more of these three have a familial relationship. Hopefully, thru DNA testing we will begin to determine those relationships, if any exists.

I have chosen to designate these three Wm McG lines as follows: 1) "The Preacher", 2) "The Rebel" and 3) "The Warrick". Others have used the two first terms to describe their ancestor and I have selected the third term so that we have a clear distinction about whom we are speaking or writing.

    THE PREACHER WILLIAM MCGREGOR

William McG, "The Preacher" is thought to have been b. @ 1735 in Scotland and is believed to have come to America "to preach in the meeting houses". Our earliest recognized record of the Preacher is with the Bute Co. NC Tax Roles for 1771. We also see mention of him in the 1774 minutes of the Kehuky Baptist Association, again in Bute Co. NC. Subsequently, he is noted on property deeds when he purchases land in Montgomery Co. NC. It is here that he is thought to have preached until his death in 1807.

We are informed that a grave marker exists in NC's Morrow State Park indicating he and his wife's death. Although we have no supporting document, one researcher indicates the wife to have been one Sarah Courtland. Another researcher, who has both observed the grave marker and taken a tracing of same, states that the years are not clear. So, the date of death for William McG the Preacher is in question.

We believe the Preacher had a son named William. This WILLIAM MC GREGOR is thought to have been b. 1755 in NC. He m. 1st Elizabeth Webb and 2nd Mary "Martha" Stiles. Wm the s/o the Preacher d. 1839 in Warren Co. TN. The children of this Wm McG are:

    1) Mary Ann (McG) Stokes b. 1783 m. Robert III
    2) Ezekiel McG b. 1784 m. Sarah Ware; he d. 1856
    3) Willis McG b. 1784 m. Susan Ware; he d. 1861
    4) Elizabeth (McG) Williams b. @ 1789
    5) Sarah "Sallie" (McG) Dodson b. 1792 d. 1868
    6) Martha Jane (McG) Mitchell b. 1794 d. 1872
    7) Jehu McG b. 1796 m. Sallie Dodson
    8) Richmond McG b. 1799 m. Mary "Polly" Myers; he d. 1858
    9) Jay McG b. 1800 m. Sarah
    10) Salina (McG) Shipley b. 1803 m. Raliegh
    11) William McG b. 1805 m. Mary; he d. 1867

    THE REBEL WILLIAM MC GREGOR

Mike, you and others, appear to descend from "The Rebel" Col. William McGregor. However, your 3 distance away on the 67 DNA markers with Robert "Bob" D. McGregor (tst kit # 29834), the brother to Carolyne (McG) Long, suggests a common ancestor exists between the two of you. That is further illustrated by Dr. Richard McGregor's "twig chart" appearing in his 2 Jan '10 posting on the MacGregor DNA Project site. See Note 1 below on last page.

This William McG, b. 1696 in Scotland (where unknown) is stated to have been "attained" in 1715 by the British, and therefore fled to America. See Note 2 on last page. Once settled in Northamption Co. NC he was given the title of Captain of a NC militia company. Upon meeting, the then Governor Gabriel Johnston, he was promoted to Colonel. See Note 3 on last page.

According to Francis Bobbit McGregor, deceased (see Note 4 below), the Rebel Col. Wm McG had two sons: William Bartlett McGregor b. 1730 and John McGregor b. 1740, both in Northampton Co. NC. This, among other information, was what Frank had graciously shared with me concerning the two sons:

    WILLIAM BARTLETT MC GREGOR

This William McG b. 1730 had four (4) sons:

    1) Flowers McG b. 1749
    2) Richmond McG b. 1760
    3) Bartlett McG b. 1770
    4) William McG b. 1789

    JOHN MCGREGOR

And, John McG b. 1740 and wife Mary were noted to have had eight (8) children:

    1) Sarah (McG) Williams
    2) Frances (McG) Sandifer
    3) Thomas McG
    4) William McG
    5) Flowers McG
    6) Jean (McG) Brown
    7) Elizabeth McG
    8) Cindy (McG) Sandifer

My records indicate that Bartlett McGregor b. 1770 in Northampton Co. NC and his wife Ann Harris had the children listed below. Bartlett McG d. 1840 in Stewart Co. TN.

    1) Nancy S. (McG) Hogan b. 1791 d. 1855 TN
    2) Harris Valentine b. 1794 m. 1st Lucy Ross and 2nd Eliza Ann Garnett
    3) Arvilla Ann (McG) b. 1795 m. 1st Wm Thomas Morris and 2nd Uriah Tyson
    4) John "Jack" NcG b. 1791-1800 d. in TX
    5) Mary Lucinda (McG) Stone
    6) Bartlett McG b. @ 1805 m. Elizabeth "Elie" Mann; he d. 1901 TX
    7) Joel McG b. @ 1806 d. 1870 TX
    8) Lucy (McG) Mann b. @ 1807 d. 1863
    9) Noah McGregor b. 1811 TN m. 1st Sarah "Sallie" Allen and 2nd Mahalia M. Duncan; Noah d. 1885

Mike, since you appear to have a strong paper trail back to Noah McGregor, you then would be back thru Bartlett McG b. 1770 NC, William Bartlett McG b. 1730 and on to "The Rebel" Col. William McG. Below are a few researchers descended from this William McGregor:

--Christy (Herndon) Clawson (email unknown) thru Noah McG

--Joe White 55gregor@chartertn.net thru Noah McG

--Lou Gilpin (email unknown) thru Harris Valentine McG

--Melinda Conwell mindylou1118@msn.com thru Noah McG

--William Bartlett McGregor b.mcgregor@worldatt.net thru Bartlett McG

    THE WARRICK WILLIAM MC GREGOR

According to the 1790 Census for Northampton Co. this William McGregor is b. before 1766. He appears in the 1767-84 Warrick Co. VA Tax Lists. Further, a deed for 287 acres purchased on Jack Swamp in Northampton Co. NC indicated this William McG to be from Warrick Co. VA.

From his will dtd in Apr 1809 and a codicil in Nov 1810 we can determine that he had a wife named Nancy in 1809, but she is not mentioned in the 1810 codicil. Their children are determined to be:

    1) William McGregor b. @ 1173 VA
    2) Anthony McG b. @ 1774 VA m. Lydia; he d. 1824 NC
    3) An unnamed female b. 1776-84 VA m. John Little
    4) Nancy (McG) b. 1785-90 m,. 1st Williams and 2nd Hill
    5) Alexander McG b. 1790 NC m. 1st Elizabeth Danielly and 2nd Mary Heath; he d. 1856 GA
    6) Frances Hutchins McG b. 1801-10 NC

The son Wm McG b. 1773 VA first appears in Nash Co. NC as a witness on a 1797 deed. This Wm McG is head of household with family in the 1810 and 1820 census takings for the county. About 1824 he moves his family to Lawrence Co. AL. Before leaving Nash Co. NC a son William McG is born in 1803.

Mike, Though I see no direct connection to the the Warrick William McG line, you may find that you have a distant common ancestor with Scott McGregor (tst kit # 153532) who is descended from this line. Scott and his father William Albert McGregor have both participated in the MacGregor DNA Project. I would once again refer you to Richard's "twig" Chart # 4 mentioned above. You will find Scott on a line at about 11:55pm (on the clock), whereas you are at about 12:10 and Robert "Bob" D. McG at about 12:05. You and Bob are on a separate branch of the "twig" from Scott, but you probably have a distance match in your markers.

You can contact Scott McG at mcgregor@broadcom.com to make some comparisons for a possible connection.

    THE DNA MACGREGOR PROJECT

For those of you receiving this communication that are not yet a part of the DNA Surname project you may want to consider doing so. It could very well lead you thru the gap so many of us find in our paper trails. You can contact Dr. Richard McGregor at chairman@clangregor.org

My apologies for this being the length it is, but found it necessary to sort out the Wm McGs in early NC. Your response will be appreciated and I would encourage interchange by anyone that has been copied on this communication.

Note 2 from the World Book Encyclopedia. "Attainder was a legal term for the loss of civil rights by an outlawed person or a person sentenced to death. According to old English law, such a person lost his rights to property. His land and his personal belongings were taken from him. Because he was judged to have suffered 'tainting' (corruption of blood) he could not inherit property or leave propery to anyone. Parliament put an end to attainder in England in 1870..." We can speculate that this Wm McG was involved in the first Jacobite Uprising that took place in 1715 and thereby was attained.

Note 3 According to NC Archives, Vol II, both the Governor and Wm McG had been friends while they attended St. Andrews University in Scotland. We have no indication of when Col. William McGregor died.

Note 4 Frank McGregor, a descendant of Col. Wm McG, was a prominent attorney in Hillsdale TX (outside Waco). Unfortunately, he was killed in a fire at his home resulting from a gas explosion in late 1998 or early 1999. It is not known if his genealogical materials were extinguished by the fire at his home or whether they were in an office safe at the time of the explosion. My last contact with Frank was in Oct 1998 and at that time his law firm was McGregor, McGregor & Carmichael, Inc. Hillsdale, TX tel # 254.582.7337. I believe that his daughter was a practicing attorney in the firm.

24 Feb 2002: Could this "William" be father of William & John, cited by Catherine Gaffin Lynn? Is a tantalizing find by Carolyne McGregor-Long because familiar names are cited, William, John, Bartlett, et. al., however, it disturbs me that

    Hello Cousins!

Just a wee e-mail to let you know that I've discovered some interesting info regarding a possible connection (place) w/our ancestors, the McGregor brothers...William, Bartlett, John....possibly another brother, whose name is unknown to me.

Over a year ago, at the Bakersfield Scottish Highland Games, I visited one of the usual vendors, Tea & Sympathy, who deal in some very fine, sometimes old books. Being a book lover, I rarely pass up an opportunity to check through the racks. There was one book that took my notice, not that it was fancy or bright, just a wee worn green book w/the title of "The Road to Rannoch and The Summer Isles". I had to have it, so paid over $20 to take it home. Being I'm truly a busy & scheduled person, I've just now gotten round to reading this book. The author is T. Ratcliffe Barnett. The book was printed in Great Britain by Turnbull & Spears, Edinburgh, 1st edition July 1924. I'll send more info later when I have time to find my pages (lost my marker).

What's exciting to me is to find some place where possibly our ancestors went to school. Speaking of Rev. William McGregor...we know he came to the colonies to preach in the meeting houses, he had collateral to make the journey to the new world & to purchase property at some point after getting here. Thus, he was not exiled from Scotland by force (it would seem) & not without another shirt in his bag, so to speak. Where did he get his schooling? Was it at his mother's knee? Possibly, however, rather doubtful as in those days, girls/women normally were not schooled. This place once called Ossian's Glen...where is it today? We do know there is an Ossian's Loch, which is higher up from Rannoch...but, is still in the same locale...mix this in w/Glen Lyon, south...not an impossible idea. I've always thought Glen Lyon played a role in this somehow, having been there, it's making more sense to me. There is a kirk (church) in Fortingal in Glen Lyon....but, what I've just read in this book, makes me wonder about another possibility. A place called Dull. Whether it's there today, I'm not sure, however, where Dull was, a church was built over a burial place of Adamnan (Saint), and a school & college - said to be the first seminary of education mainland Scotland. Dull became famous as an educational center, but in the mid centuries, the school was removed to Dunkeld, and later to St. Andrews.

If any of you have time to research any of this in regards to our line of MacGregors, pls do, & keep us all posted. This is the first "clue" I've found that feels right, in a long time.

Keep searching...we'll get over the pond & documented one of these days, I'm certain of it.

    Love to all,
    Carolyne

Lineage of the McGregors of Warren County, Tennessee

The following is derived from research done by Mary Elizabeth Barnes for The Wiseman Family and Allied Lines by Eugene M Wiseman, now deceased.

Little substantiated proof of the Warren County, Tennessee McGregor lineage exists, however researcher Mary Elizabeth Barnes believes that it appears the McGregors came to Warren County from Northampton County, North Carolina. Her assumption is based primarily on the fact that several families who intermarried with our line of McGregors also left Northampton County, North Carolina area and moved to Warren County.

Mary's research, published in The Wiseman Family and Allied Lines states; There are at least three William McGregor men listed in the 1790 census of North Carolina and two in southern Virginia. The William McGregor born about 1755 of Warren County is believed to be the son of a William McGregor, Sr. who was born between 1730-1735. This William Sr. also is assumed to have a son Richmond MeGregor.

The Wiseman Family book further states; The following information has been gathered in an attempt to solve this problem of the parentage of William McGregor of Warren County, without resolution. It is presented here so that the reader may draw his own conclusion.

The Will of John Gregory Jr., Charles County, Virginia, Westover Parish, dated 1776 names wife Martha Gregory, children Richmond Gregory and John Munford Gregory and brother William Gregory. William Christian was bondsman. (Martha Stiles McGregor is thought to be the name of William McGregor's wife.)

A William and a John Gregory were Revolutionary soldiers in the 6th Virginia Regiment. Bute County, North Carolina 1771

Tax List: William McGregor, Moses Curtis, Drury and John Christian, Green Hill, John Huckaby, James Huckaby, Thomas Huckaby, John Solomon, William Solomon, James Stiles, Thomas Webb, and William Webb. (Stiles and/or Webb is thought to be the name of William
    McGregor's wife.)

Bute County, North Carolina Record Book A, 25 May 1772 Will states; William Solomon to William Solomon Jr. Gift of a negro man to be his at my death. Witness, John Edwards, William McGregor and Green Hill.

In Index to the 1790 Census of Northampton County, North Carolina, shows John McGregor, William McGregor and Flowers McGregor, along with Thomas Webb. By 1796 the above were joined by Green Hill and Rowland Ware. Also the 1790 Census in Montgomery County, North Carolina, shows William McGregor, Bartlett McGregor, Thomas Huckoby and Bennett Solomon.

John McGregor's will is in Montgomery County in 1794.

A William McGregor bought land in Montgomery County in 1782 and 1779, and in Anson County in 1778, although these deeds are not necessarily all to the same William McGregor.

In 1776 William McGregor was given a license to preach in Franklin (formerly Bute County) NC. He served as pastor of the Mouth of Uwharrie Baptist Church.

On 1 July 1778 William McGregor bought the first land of record in Anson County, North Carolina, from Henry Mounger.

In 1795, land was surveyed for William McGregor in Montgomery County, North Carolina

1805 Tax List, Warren County, Tennessee shows: Ezekial McGregor, William McGregor and Willis McGregor

1805 Tax List, Davidson County, Tennessee shows: Thomas McGregor

1811 Tax List, Davidson County, Tennessee shows: Flowers McGregor

1811 Tax List, Maury County, Tennessee shows: William McGregor

1812 Tax List, Warren County, Tennessee shows: Ezekiel McGregor, William McGregor and Willis McGregor

1820 Census, Warren County, Tennessee shows:

    Ezekiel McGregor with 2 males under 10, 1 male 18-26, 2 males over 45, 1 female under 10 and 1 female 16-26
    William McGregor with 2 males 10-16, 1 male over 45,1 female 16-26 and 1 female over 45
    Richmond McGregor with 1 male under 10, 1 male 18-26, 1 female under 10 and 1 female 16-26

1830 Census, Warren County, Tennessee shows the following families:

Jehu McGregor, William McGregor, Jr, Ezekiel McGreggor, Richmond McGregor, Ezekiel McGregor, William McGregor and Willis McGregor

1836 Tax List, Warren County, Tennessee (Dist 4) lists: Jay McGregor (Jehu), William McGregor, Sr., Ezekiel McGregor, Richmond McGregor, William McGregor, Willis McGregor (Dist 9)

1840 Census, Warren County, Tennessee shows the following families: Ezekiel McGreggor, William McGreggor, Richmond McGregger, Jay McGreggor, Ezekiel McGreger (slave schedule), William J McGreggor and Willia McGregger

Mary Elizabeth Barnes' research closes with the following statement:

"It would appear that William McGregor and Richmond McGregor, age 70-80 in the 1830 Census, both of whom lived and died in Warren County, Tennessee, might be the sons of William McGregor, Sr. who was born between 1730 and 1735.

Need Information - Information I find that seems accepted suspect could be wrong.
    .
Haven been told for years now that John McGregor, of Northampton Co., NC d. c. 1794, sp. In will named Mary was Mary(Polly) Flowers d/o Ransford Flowers of same county, who d. 1789.
    .
    And That
    .
William McGregor, of Northampton Co., NC, was married to a Sarah Flowers d/o Ransford Flowers and sister of Mary (Polly) Flowers above.
    .
Just found what is in Ransford Flowers will which cast great doubt on this and on most of the information on the McGregor and Sandefur information found on the web for genealogy research.
Ransford Flowers will (1788) lists living children as:
Sarah Hardan (Hardin husband maybe a John Hardin from some land records but not certain)
Polly Mitchell (husband probably Jesse Mitchell from land records and he witnessed Ransford Flowers will.
    Ann Flowers
    Ransford Flowers
    Elizabeth Betsy Flowers
    .
He also mentions a grandson William McGregor (only grandchild mentioned) the executor of the will was John McGregor
    .
Have John McGregor of Northampton Co., NC will 1794 (Anson Co.) with surviving sp. Mary
    Children listed in will:
    Sarah Williams
    Francis Sandefur (John Sandefur)
    Cynthia (Centhey) Sandefur (Robert Sandefur)
    Flowers McGregor
    William McGregor
    Elizabeth McGregor
    .
(Order of children how they are listed in will am not sure of birth order)
    .
These 2 wills are only 6 years apart. Ransford Flowers daughter Polly (assume this is Mary) in 1788 is married to a Mitchell so very doubtful if she is the Mary sp of John McGregor found 6 years later in Johns will with 6 children 3 with married names.
    .
Who is John McGregors wife Mary is she a Flowers and if so who are her parents?
Who is William McGregor grandson of Ransford Flowers mentioned in his will it appears he was his only McGregor grandchild maybe of a daughter who was dead by 1788
    .
John McGregors will of 1794 also mentions a brother William McGregor.
    .
Have a will of a William McGregor of Northampton Co., NC written 1809 and proved 1810 (again in Anson Co. with sp. Nancy.
    Children listed:
Anthony, William, Alexander, Nancy Williams and Frances McGregor
    .
Who is this William McGregor he left property in his will which is called Jack Swamp. John McGregor (Megreger) (sp. Elizabeth according to deed) transferred property called Jack Swamp to William McGregor (Megreger) of Warwick Co., VA This was a 287 acre parcel which John McGregor (Megreger) had purchased from John Justice is this the same piece of property and then was is the relationship of these men. William McGregor of Warwick Co., VA I have been told went to Warren Co., TN or is he the William with a will stating he was of Northampton Co., NC?
    .
Any Information to help sort this out with documentation would be appreciated. It seems that people put whatever they find on the web without noting that much is speculation and then if becomes urban legend and it will be very hard for people to know that there genealogy is accurate. This is not a good thing for those who love genealogy and are searching for truth. And then you have the nuts out there who are so excited that their DNA have shown them to trace back to Adam please understand just what DNA can and cannot show. There is a McGregor genealogy on the web which is cited for source information and they have all sort of McGregor families mixed up and are a complete mess.
    .
Thanks for any help and for listening to my soap box chat.

The William McGregor you mention as having left a portion of land called Jack Swamp is known as "The Preacher". He was licensed to preach in the American colonies in 1776. A hand written statement in the Sandy Creek Baptist Church records (Franklin County, N.C.) reads as follows: "At a meeting in conference Sandy Creek meeting house of June 1776, ordered that William McGregor have liberty to exercise his right in preaching the Gospel of Christ." At least from this time until his death, he was the pastor of the Mouth of the Uwharrie Baptist Church. He may have also pastored a the Fishing Creek Baptist Church in Bute Co., NC. Some of his descendents headed to GA.

It is believed, but not confirmed, that the McGregor family that settled for a time in TN were descendents of one William McGregor who d aft. 1786, known as William "The Rebel". Ironically, he seems to be the one who served as a Justice of the Peace until his resignation was accepted by the House of Commons of the North Carolina Legislature on November 30, 1786, and endorsed by the Senate on December 1, 1786.

    Hi AmyAnn;

I wondered if you've made any further progress on this line? I believe I descend from the Wm McG you mention, and have the following:

The senior WILLIAM MCGREGOR D. Bef 1815 NC was in Warrick Co. VA 1767-84 before moving his family to Northampton Co. NC prior to the 1790 Federal Census. A property transaction in 1767 is indicated when he buys land from a James Dancy. And, on the VA State Enumerations he appears in Warrick Co. for 1782 and 1784. There is a William McGregor in the Warwick County, VA 1782 enumeration with a family of 7 whites and 12 blacks (obviously prosperous and established).

He receives land (287 acres on Jack Swamp) in Northampton, NC, on 4 Mar 1776 deeded from John MeGreger and his wife Elizabeth (2nd wife for John?) to "Wm MeGreger, planter of Warwick Co, VA". (Deeds of Northampton, Co, NC 1774-1787). John McGregor is his neighbor on the 1790 census, and possibly his brother since John's will of 1794 mentions a brother, William. On 10 Dec 1789 he is a buyer of personal property at the estate sale of Ransford Flowers in Northampton Co. He is head of a household in that county for the 1790 census.

This Wm McG writes his will Apr 1809 with a codicil added in 1810. He dies before 15 Jan 1815 when his children agree that their brother Wm is authorized to sell property of the father; this is land on Jack Swamp. The property is sold to John Sandifer 11 Dec 1816.

In 1809, when the will is drawn, the senior Wm names his (second) wife Nancy (to be an executor with son Wm); the children named are: William, Anthony, Nancy, Alexander and Frances. An unnamed daughter (probably deceased), is one of the three oldest children thought to have been born in Warrick Co. VA. This daughter appears to have married a John Little, as a grandson Willis Little is named in an 1810 codicil to the will.

I have a close DNA match (FTDNA yDNA 35-marker, distance=2) to a claimed descendant of the John McGregor above, suggesting a common ancestor around this time. John and Wm are likely brothers or otherwise closely related. We both also a close match (FTDNA 35/67-marker, distance=1,2,3) to a large number of people with the Monroe surname, suggesting a linkage of some sort in the 1600's or 1700's, but I can't find anything in the paper trail that would otherwise link these two surnames.

I am trying to determine the parents of William T. McGregor (born abt 1798, married Mary "Polly" Allen - 1828) who 1st purchased land in Marengo County, AL in 1833. I believe his father might be the John McGregor (married to Nancy) who bought land there in 1824, but can't figure out which John this is. The 2 of them have ties to Wilson County, TN, which is where you will find Flowers McGregor. A Willis McGregor purchased land in Marengo County in 1825, but I believe that he is one of the Warren County, TN bunch. Lastly, who are the parents of Lucy Jane McGregor who marries Joseph Vaughn in Sumter County, AL in 1845? I am thinking that she is either a child of William T. McGregor (from a previous marriage), or his little sister.

This is interesting... The William who left the land in Jack Swamp was a planter of Warwick Co., VA - his will is from Northampton Co. and was for 287 acres on Jack Swamp in an area of a Quaker meeting house where as the Rev. William was from Montgomery Co and had taxed 500 acres - you have it documented that these two men are the same men?

William the Rebel as you call him - is he the Scot who was in NC from around the 1740's? who wouldn't sware allegence to England but worked with Gov. Johnson of NC?

Thanks for any help with this.

    hi
you mentioned that John McGregor with wife Elizabeth that she was a second wife? Do you know who his first was would have been? Also do you know how old this William McGregor was when he died? You also indicate that this William McGregor's wife Nancy mentioned in his will was his second wife - do you know the name of his first wife? and who is the mother of his children listed in his will?

I am trying to sort through what I have on these lines and will try to post it here.

I am not convinced that John (wife Elizabeth) and John with widow Mary are one and the same people... But this line seems to be tied up with the Flower family and I am at a loss which William would be the grandson of Ransford Flower or by what name the mother of said grandson would have been.

The will indicates that William had a grandson of the name Little? do you know the name of his mother and father?

Has anyone ever found a will in Montgomery Co., NC for any McGregors?

    Thanks

Here is some information that might be relavant to your DNA match to the Monroe surname... from the Library of Virginia chancery records, Fauquier County, Virginia. Index# 1811-038.

John McGregor vs. Admr. of Daniel Monroe (for some reason this is indexed under John McGregor vs. Admr. of Dodd Monroe). Summary of relavant information is this: that Daniel Monroe died abt. 1789 in Fauquier County, Virginia leaving no children. His wife Mary was either deceased or died soon after her husband. John McGregor who proves to be a half-brother to Daniel Monroe, is the only surviving sibling or half-sibling. Chancery case not settled until 1811. This means that John McGregor and Daniel Monroe share a mother. To me, this also implies that this particular John McGregor was probably Virginia born, since his mother married twice and had children in Virginia.

This document can be viewed online @ Library of VA.

I ran across this while researching my own McGregor, John McGregor who married Mary Ridley Irby. They had at least two daughters; Martha Ann McGregor b.1833 and Catherine McGregor. Martha Ann McGregor married into my Henderson line in Person County, NC; but they lived in Halifax County, VA. There are records of John McGregor in Halifax County as well.

Any information about how my John McGregor ties into the larger McGregor line would be greatly appreciated!!

    Residence (Family):
Bute County is a former county located in the state of North Carolina. It was formed in 1764 from the eastern part of Granville County. It was named for John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute, Prime Minister of Great Britain from 1762 to 1763. In 1779 Bute County was divided into Franklin County and Warren County, and ceased to exist. ... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bute_County,_North_Carolina

    1. 38. William "Will" McGregor, Jr. was born in 1755 in (Perthshire, Scotland); died on 6 Oct 1839 in Warren County, Tennessee; was buried in Smyrna Cemetery, Irving College, Warren County, Tennessee.

  4. 96.  Samuel Hillis, The Immigrant was born in 1707 in Londonderry, Ireland (son of John Hillhouse and Rachel LNU); died on 7 Aug 1782 in Salisbury, Rowan County, North Carolina; was buried in Thyateria Presbyterian Cemetery, Rowan County, North Carolina.

    Notes:

    Samuel Hillhouse (wife Ann Hillhouse)

Born 1707 FreeHall Londonderry Northern Ireland
Passed on 8/17/1782 (per registered NC will) SAMUEL HILLIS WAS BORN IN 1707,IN FREEHALL,DERRY IRELAND, TO JOHN AND RACHEL HILLHOUSE (JOHN 1655-1716)-(RACHEL 1667-1716).SAMUEL HILLIS WAS ABOUT 9 YEARS OLD WHEN HIS PARENTS DIED.

SAMUEL CAME TO AMERICA AS A YOUNG MAN LANDING IN PENNSYLVANIA. HE MEET AND MARRIED ANN LUCKEY, THE DAUGHTER OF ROBERT AND ISABLE LUCKEY OF LANCASTER CO. PENNSYLVANIA.The first time I find samuel hillis' name in print,is in the will of Robert luckey Ann hillis' father, in that he states that he leaves to his daughter ann the wife of samuel hillis, five shillings. ON THE 13th DAY OF APRIL 1754 ANN (LUCKEY ) HILLISES FATHER ROBERT LUCKEY WROTE HIS LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT,HE PAST AWAY THE 21st DAY OF NOV 1757,AFTER HIS DEATH SAMUEL ,ANN AND MEMBERS OF THE LUCKEY FAMILY SET OUT FOR " THE IRISH SETTELMENT" IN ROWAN CO. north carolina. I belive that samuel and ann hillis' sons Robert and sampson were either born in pennsylvania,or on the way to north carolina, because I don't find any record of samuel till he is granted land in north carolinain 1761. WITH SAMPSON BEING BORN IN 1753, AND ROBERT BEING BORN IN 1755.

The book the carolina cradle by Robert w. Ramsey states that the will of robert luckey, written in 1754in the martic township, lancaster co. pennsylvania, referred to sons hugh, john, andrew, james, robert and samuel and to daughters isbel the wife of william sleven, and ann the wife of samuel hillis. also mentioned was agnes luckey the wife of robert pendry. By 1762 john luckey, john luckey jr., joseph luckey, robert luckey, samuel luckey, william luckey, william sleven, alexander pendry and samuel hillis were all residents of the Irish settlement.

Arriving by way of the shenandoah valley from pennsylvania and maryland, these avid scotch-irish presbyterians settled in the western part of the present rowan co.(26 counties were finally carved out of the original county, the present county taking its shape in 1840). About this time the eastern part of the county was settled by germans of the reformed faith. Both groups kept strictly to themselves for over a hundred years.

THE COUNTY RECORDS OF ROWAN CO. NORTH CAROLINA (BOOK 5-PAGE 78) REVEALS THAT ON DECEMBER 21,1761 SAMUEL HILLIS AND MEMBERS OF THE LUCKEY FAMILY WERE GRANTED LAND IN ROWAN CO. NC BY THE EARL OF GRANVILLE;. SAMUEL HILLIS WAS GRANTED 640 ACRES OF LAND DESCRIBED AS BEING ON THE NORTH SIDE OF SECOND CREEK . THIS SECTION OF LAND WAS PAID FOR AT THE RATE OF TEN SHILLINGS FOR EACH 100 ACRES OF LAND,OR $7.80 FOR THE ENTIRE 640 ACRES.

AT THIS TIME IN ROWAN CO. NORTH CAROLINA MANY PEOPLE WERE DIVDED ON THE SUBJECT OF INDEPENDENCE. KING GEORGE HAD MANY LOYAL FOLLOWERS IN THE COLONIES; HOWEVER THE SCOTCH-IRISH IN EVERY COMMUNITY WERE ALMOST TO THE MAN FOR INDEPENDENCE. THEY HAD SUFFERED MUCH FROM BRITISH OPPRESSION IN IRELAND AND HAD COME TO AMERICA, THAT THEY MIGHT HAVE RELIGIOUS AND CIVIL LIBERTY.

All five of samuel hillis' sons Sampson, robert, john, samuel jr. and palser all fought in the war.Sampson fought in the continental line-revolutionary war. robert fought with co. B under gen. griffith rutherford army of north carolina and under col.francis locke reg. comm. and with capt.w.m wilson. samuel jr. fought under griffith rutherford 10th regiment of the continental army at the age of 16 yrs. john hillis served under capt. bell and was present when cornwallis surrender, and served under capt. hyskill. his brother palser also served in the war.

In 1782 samuel hillis wrote his last will and testimony, samuel hillis died August 7, 1782 he is buired in the cemetery of the Thyateria presbyterian church at mt. ulla in the mill bridge area of rowan co. north carolina.(ann luckey hillis is not buired beside him).

    IN HIS WILL SAMUEL HILLIS STATED THAT HE KNEW HE WAS WAS VERY SICK OF BODY BUT OF PERFECT MIND AND MEMORY, AND WHILE BEING IN THIS CONDITION, HE WONTED TO DISPOSE OF HIS WORLDLY POSSESSIONS AS FOLLOWS;

to his loving wife ann he bequeathed three cows, her mare, spinning wheel, bed clothes, and possession of the farm for her lifetime.

to my son sampson, one-third of the farm, the plow, mall and wedges, and one cow.

to my son samuel jr. ,one-third of the farm, the family house and improvements, three cows, mare.

to my son robert, one-third of the farm.

to my daughter elizabeth, her mare and saddle, three cows, her bed and furniture.

to my daughter ann, her white mare.

to my daughter martha, five shillings in hard cash.(65 cents)

in addition, samuel asked that he be giving a decent christian burial.

samuel didn't mention john or palser in his will.I belive john and palser left rowan co. north carolina in september of 1779,with Daniel Boone when he lead a large party of emigrants to kentucky.

NOW THAT THE WAR WAS OVER, AND SAMUEL SR. WAS DEAD,SAMUEL JR. HIS MOTHER,BROTERS AND SISTERS DISPOSED OF THE FAMILY FARM AND MOVED. THIS MOVED OCCURRED ABOUT 1786 AND TOOK THEM TO FAYETTE COUNTY ,KENTUCKY.

Burke County (NC) Land Grants, abstracted by Betsy Dodd Pittman, The Burke Journal, August, 1993, p. 17:

"1409. THOMAS WELSHER 100 A. on No. side of Catawba River, on a conditional line between Welsher & Alexander Erwin, adj. McKenny. Ent. 31 Oct. 1779, #1020. CB: Micajah Sansom & Benj. Harris. Early Wilchers...

The name is spelled Welcher, Whelchel, Wilsher, Wilshire, Wicher, Willshire, Whiltshire, Wilsure, Wilkshire in various early VA and NC records. In 1654 John Wiltshire is listed as a Virginia immigrant, and in 1679 several of the Wilsheir family immigrated from Barbados. There was a Thomas Wiltshire in Northampton country, VA in 1672 and in the Isle of Wight Country in 1682. By the mid 1700's Thomas, Dorcas, and Joseph Wilshire are in Caroline County, VA. John Weltshire was in Augusta County, VA in 1762 and David Whiticher is there in 1769.

The name seems without doubt Wiltshire, at first, and shows an English origin - becoming Wilcher in both English and pioneer usage, until Wilcher became generally adopted. Thomas, of Warrant County, signs himself "Thomas Wiltshire" on several county records, one of them among the last he signed, in 1816 - the year of his death. (Copied from "The History and Genealogy of some pioneer Norther Alabama Families" by Mary N. Gibson - Brittain, Marie Brittain Craig, and Marjorie Craig Churchill.)

Research on the surname "Wilcher" shows it to be a variation on the name "Wiltshire," a county in SW England. About 90% of all people with that name 200-300 years ago came from there. Wilshire, England, is probably where the American Wilchers came from.

The vast majority of the Wilchers (or other spellings) who came to the New World in the 1600s and 1700s came as indentured servants, usually as an alternative to other punishment for petty offenses.

The first Wilcher in America showed up in Virginia in 1635 as an indentured servant. Over the next 150 years a couple dozen others showed up in various places: Maryland, Pennsylvania, and the Bahamas.

About of the Wilchers came to Virginia in the 1600s and 1700s.

One of these early Virginia indentured servants was likely the progenitor of the Wilchers in Amherst-Bedford.

Died: Between 8 Aug 1816 and 7 Oct 1816 in McMinnville, TN (about age 74)
Buried: Buried in the Liberty Cumberland Presbyterian Church Cemetery, but exact location unknown.

The earliest records of Thomas Wilcher, Sr. are in Amherst County, Virginia and were two court cases which were started in Dec 1767 against Thomas Wilcher for slander decided in Wilcher's favor. The other was for trespass and assault, but it was dismissed by the plaintiffs. He was probably born in the 1740s in Virginia. A good assumption might be that he was about 21 years old when the court order on road work was issued on 2 Jun 1766. Thus, he might have been born about 1745.

On 5 Feb 1776 he was appointed as 1 of 4 appraisers for a personal estate in Amherst County, VA. During the 1770s in Amherst County no court cases could be found. He did buy and sell land with the purchase of 174 acres on 16 Apr 1770 of part of tract which had been conveyed by Peyton Randolph and Lusford Lomax, Jr. to Philip Grymes. In 1770 he bought 150 acres which he and his wife Anne sold on 13 Feb 1779. He bought 200 acres in Amherst County on 2 Jan 1785. On 7 May 1787 he sold 481 acres in Amherst County. Thomas Wilcher Sr and his wife Anne sold 681 of his 855 acres in 1787 and 1788. He and Anne sold 81 acres on 2 Jul 1787. On 4 Nov 1788 they sold 600 acres. He also sold 200 acres on the south side of Berry's Mountain which he had bought in Oct 1785. Also on 4 Nov 1788 Thomas Wilcher and Anne sold 400 acres on both sides of Harris Creek.

In May 1787 he served on the Amherst County Court grand jury. The court orders of the late 1780s and early 1790s show that Thomas Wilcher was the defendant in two suits and was the plaintiff in six suits. None of these appear to be overly significant. There were other suits for amounts of about $100 or less, some of which were ruled in Wilcher's favor, and others dismissed. A case in court in May 1791 mentioned that Thomas Wilcher was "not a resident of Amherst County." In an Aug 1789 case it was state that "it appearing to the court that the said Thomas Wilcher hath removed to the State of North Carolina . . "

He died in 1816 so he would have been about 71 years old at the time of his death. He moved to Burke County, NC in 1789, and to Warren County, TN in 1807.

Thomas Wilcher, Sr purchased land on John's River in Burke County, NC as early as 1778. He moved there from Amherst Country, Virginia in 1789 (the suit against David Tinsley proves that Thomas Wilcher moved from Amherst County, VA, to North Carolina prior to Aug 1789).

Thomas Wilcher's wife is thought by most Wilcher researchers to be Anne Walton.

William Walton, Sr., was a Revolutionary Soldier, born 1735 in Virginia, son of William and Susannah Walton who were in Amherst County, VA by 1761 and in Burke County, NC 1792.

Thomas Walton purchased 600 acres at the mouth of John's River from Thomas Welcher (later a plantation belonging to Colonel John Sudderth).

Thomas Welcher's land in Burke Co., NC was granted to him by the State of North Carolina (copied from Burke: The History of a North Carolina County, 1777-1920). Thomas Welcher and William White were overseers of John's River in 1796.

Patrick Hennessey lived on the south side of John's River. After Thomas Wilcher Sr's death it was conveyed in 1818 by "Joseph England, Thomas Wilcher, Jr. and Benjamin Wooten, all of Warren County, TN to William Erwin of Burke County, NC" ... "tract adjoining the lands of John and Samuel Franklin, William Erwin and the children of William Walton",. This was a tract of land granted to Thomas Wilcher Sr. in 1799 by the State of North Carolina. This deed is recorded in Deed Book C, Warren County, TN.

Thomas Wilcher Sr moved to Warren County in 1807 (actually was White County that became Warren County about 1817-1820) from Burke County, NC. His business life is very well documented with many legal proceedings, including land deals and various disagreements with associates (see Moses Park reference). On 4 Dec 1807 he was 1 of 12 men appointed or commissioned as Justice of the Peace by the Tennessee General Assembly as part of the first County Court of Warren County [McMinnville at a Milestone 1810-1960 in the Birmingham Public Library written by the Southern Standard in McMinnville].

Thomas Wilcher Sr first arrived in White County in 1807, part of which became Warren County in late 1807. About 1807, Thomas Wilcher assignee of three Revolutionary War Soldiers, Martin Armstrong, John Nelson and Grady Byinham, entered a part of the land called for in the warrant of each. This was land extending south from the Barron Fork river to beyond present day Liberty Lane. Wilcher built a two-story brick home sometime after 1807, a portion of which exists recently as the home of Dr. B.C. Smoot. Thomas Wilcher Sr. died in this house. His earliest land grant records were in Aug 1808 in White County. There were six in the amount of 75 to 240 acres. He had 4 land grants for land in Warren Country of 33 to 125 acres on 24 Aug 1808. There were numerous other land related transactions. It is noted in the Warren County, TN marriage records prior to 1852 and court records prior to 1848 were lost or destroyed leaving quite a void for researchers.

When Warren County was organized in 1807, according to the laws of the State, a temporary log house and jail were erected near the center of the county, where the courts were to be held until the citizens of the county should elect commissioners who were to select a proper place for a permanent county seat. In 1808 a small log courthouse was built on top of a high hill, near a big spring just above the Barron Fork - at the towns southeast fording place - and where the Looney's Trace then crossed the river. From 1808 until sometime in 1811, circuit court was well as the other courts, met in the little log house twice a year at which time other lawyers from other towns with the circuit attended.

From Laughlin's "Reminiscences of McMinnville "as it was in 1811, he says "On occasions when the courts met in the log court house across the river, the judges and lawyers boarded about in the neighborhood as best they could. Most of them stayed in the home of Thomas Wilcher Sr. - two miles from the place of holding the court. After the death of Mr. Wilcher in 1816, the late Joshua Coffee occupied the house until his death in 1842 (Mr. Coffee didn't occupy the house until after Mrs. Wilcher's death).

On 7 Oct 1818 the executors sold 333 acres for $1,053. They sold about 183 acres of land in Burke Co. NC on 25 Nov 1818 for $100 (was originally granted on 7 Jun 1799).

One of the best known and first organized churches of Warren County was Liberty, a mile or so from McMinnville. As shown by his will, land was given by Thomas Wiltshire (Wilcher), the church house built and the church, Cumberland Presbyterian in doctrine, organized all in 1815. William Cheek Smartt is the reputed founder and he and John Allison, a Revolutionary soldier, were two of its first elders. On August 8, 1816, Thomas Wilcher gave the land to build the Cumberland Presbyterian Church at Liberty.

Thomas Wilcher Sr and his wife, Anne Walton, are likely buried in the Liberty Cumberland Presbyterian Church cemetery. He donated the land for the cemetery. Liberty is 1 mile south of McMinnville off Highway 55 on Liberty Lane. Turn left going south on Morrison St on Old Morrison Hwy then Liberty Lane and the Liberty Cumberland Presbyterian Church will be on the right as well as the cemetery.

    Joseph M. Bragg and his wife, Richard M. Bragg, and other family members are buried here in order: Richard M. Bragg 14 Jun 1833 - 11 Dec 1858; Joseph M. Bragg 25 May 1798 - 9 Jul 1879; Clarissa T. Bragg 25 Sep 1806 - 16 Aug 1851; Hugh T. Bragg 25 Nov 1831 - 22 Dec 1845; and Martha Bragg 8 Feb 1845 - Jun 1845.

In summary Thomas Wilcher was probably born about 1745-46. He moved from Amherst County, VA, to Burke County, North Carolina (near Morganton), whe he was approximately 44 years old, in before Aug 1779. He moved on to Tennessee when he Thomas Wilcher, Sr. (cont'd) was about 62 years old.Thomas Wilcher died in Warren County, TN, Oct 1816 when he was about 71 years old.

    Given at office the 7th June A. D. 1823

This will was proved in open court on the 7th day of June 1823 and registered 9 June 1823. Thomas I and Ann had 7 daughters and 2 sons, all of whom received bequests from his will. [See "Siblings," p. 4]

On 7 Oct 1818 the executors sold 333 acres for $1,053. They sold about 183 acres of land in Burke Co. NC on 25 Nov 1818 for $100 (was originally granted on 7 Jun 1799).

Per "The North Carolinian Journal by Wm. Perry Johnson editor in March 1960 the North Carolina Revolutionary War Pay Vouchers listed Thomas Wilcher (or Welsher) from the Morgan District, Burke Co., NC. No further information is available, but this shows clearly Thomas Wilcher Sr was a Revolutionary War soldier from the state of North Carolina. He was in North Carolina from 1789 - 1807.

    Early Wilchers

From "The Wiseman Family and Allied Lines, Vol I" found in the Warren County, TN genealogical library. The ancestors for the Warren Country, TN family by the surname Wilcher are difficult to assertain.

(Copied from "The History and Genealogy of some pioneer Northern Alabama Families" by Mary N. Gibson - Brittain, Marie Brittain Craig, and Marjorie Craig Churchill.)
    Thomas Wilcher, Sr. (cont'd)

About 3/4 of the Wilchers came to Virginia in the 1600s and 1700s. One of these early Virginia indentured servants was likely the progenitor of the Wilchers in Amherst-Bedford.

    A summation of early Wilchers...

    Peggy,

Below is a message I posted a couple of years ago to Geneva Anderson. She apparently has the "link" I'm looking for which puts my John Wilcher (b. 1783) in KY at the right time. However, we haven't connected yet. I think she sent me a monumental, several megabyte database dump in 1999, but nothing specific on the link.

I've posted this to her again in hopes she will be more specific. It doesn't look like my John and your John are the same guy, although they may have been from the same family before that.

    Brett (previous posting below)

I am descended from a line of Wilchers that found its way to the Pacific Northwest in 1868. I can trace back five generations (including myself) to a Stephen Wilcher, who was born in Casey Co. or Lincoln Co., KY, in 1810. He moved to Missouri in the 1840's, then on to Clark Co., WA, in 1868. His descendants all live in the PNW.

Stephen's father appears to have been named John Wilcher, who was 67 years old in the 1850 census and claimed to have been born in KY. That would put his birth in 1783, pretty early for KY, but possible if his parents were there with Daniel Boone and George Rogers Clark (and a whole lot of Indians).

The family seems to have been from Virginia. Your Amherst, Bedford Co., connections look promising because of the same set of names-- John, Joseph, Charles, etc.-- and because of the dates. They were there in the late 1700's and the same names show up in Casey-Lincoln, KY, in the early 1800's. This doesn't do much for John Wilcher's claim about being born in KY in 1783, but works well for connecting Wilchers in KY and VA.

I've also been looking back further to try to figure out how Wilchers got to Amherst-Bedford in the late 1700's. Most of my conclusions are based purely on statistical probablilities. For example, research on the surname "Wilcher" shows it to be a variation on the name "Wiltshire," a county in SW England. About 90% of all people with that name 200-300 years ago came from there. I'm inclined to think that Wiltshire, England, is where the American Wilchers came from. The vast majority of the Wilchers (or other spellings) who came to the New World in the 1600's and 1700's came as indentured servants, usually as an alternative to other punishment for petty offenses. The first Wilcher in America showed up in Virginia ca. 1635 as an indentured servant. Over the next 150 years a couple dozen others showed up in various places: Maryland, Pennsylvania, and the Bahamas. About three-quarters of the Wilchers came to Virginia in the 1600's and 1700's. I suspect one of these early Virginia indentured servants was the progenitor of the Wilchers in Amherst-Bedford.

    My challenges are:

    1) to verify the connection between my Stephen Wilcher, born KY in 1810, with John Wilcher;
    2) connect that John Wilcher with the Amherst-Bedford, VA, Wilchers; and
    3) figure out the who, when, and how of the Wilcher migration from England to Virginia and then to Amherst-Bedford.

Any information you can provide that might help fill in the "middle years" would be appreciated.

    Later response...

    Hi Brett

Do you have further info on the Amherst County, Va Wilchers which you could share with me? I have come across references to Charles and John W. Wilcher being sons of Joseph and Barbara Wilcher of Amherst Co, Va (late 1700s time period). There was also a Thomas Wilcher who may fit as another relative. Thomas Wilcher, formerly of Amherst co, Va, is listed in land records of Burke co, Nc along with Charles Wilcher. This same Thomas had issue who removed to Warren and Cannon Counties, Tennessee.

I would appreciate any details you might have on any Amherst co, Va Wilcher family, which might help me verify or add to the limited Wilcher info I have...

    Hey cuz,

I was looking at your notes for Nancy Anna Walton and looking at the sources... I was wondering if you realized that the Family Search sources link back to trees that give her parents as the William who married Susannah Cobb? Even so, I still don't think this is correct because there is no proof that she was even a Walton let alone the daughter of William and Susannah. Also, I have seen (but not sure if it is sources) that Anne, the daughter of William and Susannah was married to someone else. Again, I don't know if that had sources or not but it is worth noting. I thought you might want to know in case you want to alter or remove those cited sources. So far I haven't found anything regarding her parentage or even real surname. I have definitely ruled out William Walton and Elizabeth Tilman as her parents. They were married on 1 Dec 1758. I found the record proving their marriage date and therefore proving they aren't her parents.

I have found quite a few deed records for Thomas Wilcher. I wasn't really thinking about Warren County having been formed from White County before. A lot of the land deeds for him are in White County...something to keep in mind when searching for records for Warren County. I will have to change the format from jpg to pdf for you so it may take some time.

Here is a plat map that shows his land in Warren County:

A note regarding Thomas Wilcher's death date... it is given by everyone as 08 Aug 1816...but that was the day he made the will. The transcription of his will indicates his will was proved in open court during the Oct 1816 term so his death date is sometime between when he wrote his will (08 Aug 1816) and when it was proved (Oct 1816). Then there is a note at the bottom which reads:
Given at office the 7th June A.D. 1823
So I am not sure what that is about.

Interestingly, on the page opposite to one of the Thomas Wilcher land deeds was one for James Cain. The name is mistranscribed as Caise but when you look at the bottom of the document it is more obvious that it said Cain. I also found this tidbit in the White County Minutes on GenWeb (this site also has lots several mentions of Thomas Wilcher suing various people for money owed).

Collins River is the main stream of the county. this stream rises in Grundy County, passes near McMinnville, just below the town receives the waters of Barren Fork, and empties into Caney Fork. Hickory Creek is a branch of Barren Fork, and Charles Creek empties into Collins River, they, with the two named and Mountain Creek composing the principal streams of the county.
When the pioneers came to what is now the territory of Warren County, they found the valleys and coves covered with an almost impenetrable growth of tall cane and the mountains and hills with heavy timber. Game was plentiful and many are the stories of exciting bear and deer hunts handed down and now told with keen relish by the sons of the hardy pioneers.

    Tragedy for the family...

I am descended from Archibald and your post was not quite correct on what happened to him.
It was not Archibald Sr. but his son Archibald Jr. who was killed in the massacre. His wife Ann was initially captured, but escape, and received a frosty reception from relatives when she arrived to reclaim the family property from them.

Quite a few of Ann's relatives were also killed in the massacre. As for Archibald Jr. and Ann's children, this is a somewhat confusing point:
-- An oldest son named John is said in some accounts to have been killed, but in others to have escaped. I have seen some researchers claim to be his descendants.
-- A baby was kidnapped and eventually killed. One version has the baby killed immediately when Ann escaped. Another has a Shawnee family adopting the child, but killing it a few years later. Both versions describe a gruesome death by the child's head being bashed in.
-- Jane Clenndennin was the young daughter of Archibald Jr. and Ann, who was captured by the Shawnees. She was held captive by near Pittsburg for nine years. At the age of 14 she was released in a hostage swap or some such arrangement. According to one version, she was with child and Ann intially would not accept her as her daughter.

Jane married a Mr. Davis. Her daughter Mary Gray Davis (wife of Congressman Ballard Smith of Virginia) is my direct ancestor.

Since one version of the story implies that Jane's oldest child was not really a Davis, I would be very interested in learning more about whether that is accurate and whether that was Mary or an older sibling (half-sibling).

    THE HILLHOUSE FAMILY

    LONDONDERRY
    Northern Ireland

An American found tracing family roots can seem a peculiar oddity to people in the countries from where our ancestors immigrated. After all, many centuries of family lineage are still firmly grounded on the land of their ancestors. It may come as a comfort to those who stayed to know that once driven from those well-loved landscapes by persecution or famine, early immigrants landed in 18th and 19th Century America looking for the lay of familiar land. They named their parishes and towns in memory of the life they left behind, names like Derry and Londonderry, New Hampshire or hundreds of other place names brought from Britain, Europe and nearly all of the countries of the Earth. They brought their traditions and their passion in search of a chance to start a new life. The ties remain true whether spoken or silenced to just beneath the surface, ready to reveal itself again through the backward glance of the generations of descendants that follow.

According to Margaret P. Hillhouse's "Historical and Genealogical Collections Relating to the Descendants of Rev. James Hillhouse" (1924) Abraham Hillhouse of Artikelly, Ireland was born sometime before 1639 when he moved from Ayrshire, Scotland to Ireland as a landholder in the Ulster Plantation. The family resided in the Parish of Aghanloo for most of their 120 year stay in Northern Ireland, the townlands where their name appears in historical records include Ballycastle, Artikelly, Free Hall, Streeve Hill and at least 101 days held in siege in 1689 of the city of Derry.

Reid's History - 1644 quote "Abraham Hillhouse, of Ballycastle and a burgess of Limavady with a large number of people took the Oath of the Covenant in September 1644 at Ballycastle, and there met the Scottish Ministers on their return from Londonderry to Coleraine."

Abraham (1) and Janet Hillhouse had three children, Abraham (2), James (1) and John (1). His will is dated 1676 states he was "to be buried in such charges as my dear wife, Janet, and my eldest son, Abraham Hillhouse, shall think fit." Free Hall is first mentioned in the 1667 and was the birthplace that year of their son John.
