Caroline McGeorge, d/o James McGeorge? Posted by: Jack Bailey Date: December 07, 1998 at 09:57:45 of 261

In Harlan County Marriages 1818-1825, we read the following marriage record:

Caroline McGeorge married Izrael Mercy, 26 February, 1818, Harlan County, KY.

Remarks: Records show there was only one McGeorge household in Harlan County when it was formed from Knox County, KY in 1819, and that was the household of James McGeorge and wife Ann LaForce. Previously I knew of only three children born to James and Ann: 1) Nancy Agnes McGeorge b. 1795 VA (possibly Botetourt Co.); John (Jack/Jackie) McGeorge b. 1804 Harlan Co., KY; and 3) Patrick Henry McGeorge b. ca 1814, Harlan Co., KY.

It appears likely that Caroline was a heretofore unknown daughter of James McGeorge and Ann LaForce. Regretably, we don't know Caroline's age at marriage, but if she married in her late teens or twenties, her approximate birthdate would fit perfectly within the children of James and Ann.

However, there is one other possibility that cannot be excluded: Between 1816 and 1822, James's brother Thomas McGeorge from Botetourt Co VA, lived for a short time near his brother James; but by 1822, Thomas had moved on to Warren Co., TN. At some point in his travels, Thomas's wife Judith died, and he evidently remarried a Miss Goodlow. So, its possible that Caroline was the daughter of Thomas and his first wife Judith LaForce.

Nevertheless, I suspect Caroline was the daughter of James and Ann.

Does anyone else have any information on Caroline's family origins?

McGeorge, Madison , Confederate Infantry, 25th Regiment, Tennessee Infantry

25th Infantry Regiment completed its organization in August, 1861, at Camp Zollicoffer, in Overton County, Tennessee. Its members were recruited in the counties of White, Overton, Putnam, and Jackson. The unit fought at Fishing Creek and Perryville , then was assigned to General B.R. Johnson's Brigade, Army of Tennessee. In November, 1863, it was consolidated with the 44th Regiment. The unit participated in the conflicts at Murfreesboro and Chickamauga , served in the Knoxville operations, then moved to Virginia. Here it saw action at Drewry's Bluff , took its place in the Petersburg trenches, and ended the war at Appomattox .

In January, 1862, this regiment reported 683 men present for duty, had 55 disabled at Fishing Creek, and suffered 8 casualties at Perryville. It lost thirty-six percent of the 336 at Murfreesboro and thirty-nine percent of the 145 at Chickamauga. The 25th/44th reported 95 casualties of the 259 engaged at Drewry's Bluff.

On April 9, 1865, the 25th surrendered 4 officers and 21 men. The field officers were Colonels John M. Hughes and Sidney S. Stanton; Lieutenant Colonels Samuel Davis, George G. Dibrell, R.C. Sanders, Robert B. Snowden; and Majors Josiah H. Bilbrey, William A. Duncan, Samuel H. McCarver, and Timothy H. Williams.

    Notes (1)

Researching the Tennessee 1850 Census makes sense because his child, Nancy Jane George [7241], was born in ABT. 1847 in TN and his child, John Mack George [7262], was born in ABT. 1854 in White Co. TN. The 1850 census is important because it was the first U.S. census to list all family members, not just the head of household.

Some background on Madison Mack George [7258]: He was born in BET. 1822 - 1824 in TN / N.C., and he died in GSEST. 1885 in Fayetteville, Lincoln Co. TN.
