    Hello Nadine,

For close to 20 years I have been researching the McPeak McPeake family. It is not an easy task. My grandfather James Andrew McPeak said that all McPeaks were related. I too feel that there is an element of truth to this but it is much more complcated than he or even I thought. It is generally thought that we all originated in Ireland, However I have been told all my life that it was a scotts-irish surname.

In ireland there is a townland called Ballimacpeake. It has both upper and lower sections. To my understanding a townland is like a large ranch. When the McPeaks came to America is beyond me, but there must be a common ancestor that we have not found yet. For me, I can go back to 1714 when my gggg grandfather Daniel McPeak was born. He died in 1787 possibly in Tennessee.

Not having the information in front of me I don't remember what his wifes first name was but her last name was Thacher. His son John was my ggg grandfather and he was married to Esther Miller and it appears to be that he was in York County, South Carolina where his Son William my gg grandfather was born on March 24, 1784 in South Carolina. He married a lady by the name of Martha. Her maiden name, I don't knnow. she was born in September of 1782? I think. His son was Andrew Jackson McPeak born May 5, 1820 in Sparta, Tennessee. He died about 1903-1906 in Macoupin County, Illinois. He married Emily Lemay who was reportedly French Indian. what tribe, I am not sure. It may have been Cherokee as I do have that blood line through my mother.

Andrew had a son James Andrew McPeak my grandfather. He was born December 5, 1871 in Humboldt, Kansas. He died in Springfield, Illinois on August 25, 1958. He was married to Olive Idella Gray who was born January 7, 1874 in Shipman, Illinois. She died in Virden, where they were living at the time in Illinois, on February 11, 1947.

My father was Melvin Edgar McPeak who was born on Febraury 9, 1917 in Illinois and died in South Carolina where he pastored a church at the time, on December 24, 1973. My mother was Wilma Fredlene Smith McPeak who was born October 12, 1919 and died here in Asheville, North Carolina were I live on November 22, 2001.

Hope this may encourage you in your genealogical search

    Hello Fred McPeak:

Recent research via rootsweb.com shows that Patrick McPeak is likely my great great great great great grandfather who was born in Ulster or Northern Ireland. When he came to this country, I do not know. He had a son called Danial or Daniel McPeak and Daniel had a son Called John McPeak whose son William McPeak (born March 24, 1784 in York County, South Carolina) was my Great Great Grandfather. William later settled in White County, Tennesee with his brother James. He married a woman by the name of Martha and James married a Jane Potts. William and his family migrated to Macoupin County, Illinois in 1826 and there are descendants there to this day or near there. I don't know if they are still in Macoupin County. There William's son Andrew Jackson McPeak and his wife Emily LeMay McPeak are buried as well as my fraternal Grandfather James Andrew McPeak and Grandmother Olive Idella Gray McPeak. Believing that there is a connecting link to a lot of McPeaks yet to be discovered, I am wondering if that link could be Patrick.
I would love to hear from you.

McPeak Family Surname: Meaning and Origins?

I am a Gaelic speaker, not quite fluent yet, but I and read, speak decent Irish. What I know about the name is that in Irish it is written Mac Pâeice. That is the genitive form in the surname, the surname take from the name Pâeic. It is very old, the meaning and origins are not known, though Woulfe says they are from the English word Pic, meaning a 'thickset man.' Could be. Gaels, i.e. the native Irish loved to borrow names from people the bumped into, so you have names like Seâan, Inneirghe (Henry), Seamus (James) all being adopted by Irish families. Woulfe is suggesting that this is the case with the name Peak... it is a given name which was turned into a clan name.

It would be interesting to see if all McPeaks are related, you can do this via a DNA test. I posted earlier on this today on the McPeak Message thingy. I have a McPeek man that I am a DNA match to, my surname McCain, this tells us that the McCains of Antrim/Derry are paternally related to the McPeak family, most of whom are from the Ballymacpeake/Maghera area of Derry.
