    Notes:

Excerpted from "From The Beautiful Ben Lomand To The Great Southwest", by Howard S. Jones, Chapter II, pp. 5-7, date unknown:

" EARLY LIFE OF MY MOTHER

My mother, Nancy Elizabeth Merriman, was born August 10, 1854 in the small mining town of Dunlap, Tennessee.

She had three brothers and three sisters. Her brothers were George, Dick and Lee. Her sisters were Josie, Simmie and Ella.

The coal mining town of Dunlap, Tennessee was an early day "Boom Town" and considered a very tough place to live.

My mother's description of life in Dunlap, the way she remembered it as a young girl was certainly not a very pleasant memory. We might compare Dunlap with the Oil Boom towns of Oklahoma and Texas. However, according to all reports, lawlessness in the coal mining town of Dunlap, Tennessee far exceeded that of amy of the "crime ridden" oil boom towns of the Great Southwest.

My Grandfather Merriman worked in one of the business establishments in downtown Dunlap.

My mother recalls that on one occasion her father witnessed a "feuding shoot out" on Main Street. When the smoke cleared ten men lay dead.

My mother's brother Dick worked in the coal mines all of his active adult life He was never married. His mother and sisters, in fact all of the folks, were very concerned about him, because of the health hazzards and the "ever present" danger of mining accidents.

Her brother, George, was the "practical joker" of the Merriman family. My mother told me about some of her brother's "so called practical jokes." It was quite clear that my mother did not share her brother's idea of a "practical joke." I remember when Uncle George visited our family. I was a very small boy, but I do recall the pleasure he seemed to get in telling us about some of his practical jokes. One of them took place in South Pittsburg, Tennessee. It seems that Uncle George had a team of horses hitched to a wagon and was driving down the street when he saw a man with a small stand on the sidewalk, selling some kind of gadgets to make a living. So Uncle George thought it would be very funny to pretend that his horses had suddenly become frightened and were running away and completely out of his control. So Uncle George
managed to hit that small stand with the wheel of the wagon, destroying the stand and scattering the gadgets all over the place, to say nothing of almost scaring that poor salesman to death.

After Uncle George ended his visit my mother said her brother conveniently forgot to tell us the outcome of his practical joke. She said he was arrested by the police and forced to pay all the damages he had inflicted upon that poor sidewalk salesman. She said it was a substantial sum considering that period of time. My mother said she hoped this would teach Uncle George a lesson about his so called practical jokes, but of course it did not! The trouble with Uncle George was that sometimes his practical jokes were neither practical nor jokes.

My mother's brother Lee was shot and killed in an argument with a Dunlap man. This shocked and grieved my mother very much. Uncle Lee was her favorite brother and he was only in his twenties.

As mentioned before, mother's three sister were Josie, Simmie and Ella. Her sister, Josie, married a man by the name of Smith. They had three sons and three daughters, two of the daughters were born deaf mutes. My mother visited Aunt Josie and her family quite often and she said the two girls who were deaf mutes were (to use my mother's words) and "smartest things she ever saw".

The state of Tennessee provided a school for those who could neither hear nor speak. The school started with the elementary and went through college. One of the girls married a college instructor and the other girl was on the college faculty and taught for many, many years.

My mother's sister, Simmie, married a man by the name of Vonner. They had one daughter and two sons. The sons went into military service when they reached the proper age. My mother did not know very much about sister Simmie's family. After Mr. Vonner passed awary, Aunt Simmie married a Mr. Dugan. Aunt Simmie and her husband did visit our family one time.

My mother's sister, Ella, who was named for Grandmother Merriman's sister, Aunt Ella Kesey, married Mr. Joe Harmon. They had four children, three daughters, and one son.The daughters were Josie,Lula and Frankie. The son was Billy. My mother was very close to her sister, Ella and family. They seemed to have a lot in common and enjoyed being together very much. However, this wonderful association was to last only a few years. They were all saddened and grieved by the sudden death of Aunt Ella. The children were young when their mother passed away, but uncle Joe, who was a very fine man, did a marvelous job in taking care of them. He realized the difficulty he faced in trying to be both a father and mother to his children, but he was determined to meet the responsibility. My mother said Joe Harmon was such a good and kind man that he put the welfare of his children above everything else. Uncle Joe devoted his life to his children and denied himself the possibility of happiness in another marriage. He lived on a farm in the Smyrna Community, but it seems that he was more interested in the timber business. However, this was all changed by an accident involved in hauling a load of lumber. One leg was so badly injured that it had to be amputated. As a result of this accident Uncle Joe was forced to turn to something less active. This he did by opening a country store. Since he was such a nice, friendly person, his operation of the country store proved to be very successful."

    OLD ROBERSON CEMETERY

This cemetery was so overgrown and in the woods, that it was impossible to get to all the graves. It was late in the afternoon and when we reached the cemetery, we stumbled into a yellow jackets nest and had to leave immediately. Several relatives indicated that this was where Rufus Allen and Margaret Roberson Merriman are buried. On the next trip to Bledsoe County, I plan to revisit this cemetery and get as much information as possible. I do know that Margaret's parents are buried there, Col. Isaac Roberson and his wife, Elivira Cole. I was able to get a faint picture of their gravesites before being stung several times.

I am curious to learn more about this branch you mention. My family came down from Virginia through North Carolina, and Franklin Co., Georgia before moving on to Rutherford Co., Tennessee.

Do you have more information on John CHRISTIAN who was married to Mary BRYANT?

Perhaps this John is the grandfather of my ancestor Peyton CHRISTIAN.

I'm almost certain Peyton's parents were Drury CHRISTIAN and Sarah PEYTON but that's as far back as I can take it.

In the early 1800s in Rutherford Co., Tennessee a Drury and John CHRISTIAN lived together with their families in one household. I assume they were brothers. Perhaps they were children of John CHRISTIAN and Mary BRYANT.

I would appreciate anything you can tell me. Thank you.

    Vickie,

Drury CHRISTIAN, the son of Robert Thomas CHRISTIAN and Lucy BRADLEY, did move to North Carolina. He died in Warren Co., North Carolina in 1785. They have his will on file at the State Archives in Raleigh. The will was written on 26 April 1780. The will was proved at July Court in 1785 and witnessed by his widow Lucy (WILLIAMS) and his son-in-law William BALTHROP (husband of daughter Mary). I’ve been trying to find a connection between my earliest known direct ancestor (Peyton CHRISTIAN b. 1810 Warren Co., TN) and the Amherst Co., Virginia CHRISTIANS. For a long time I thought Drury CHRISTIAN of Warren Co., North Carolina was the father and then the grandfather of Peyton. I do not think there is a direct connection now. Below are the children of Drury and Lucy as I have found from wills, census records, land records, etc.

Children of Drury CHRISTIAN and Lucretia “Lucy” WILLIAMS (b. 6 May 1727 Prince George Co., VA d. after 1790, dau. of Charles and Ann WILLIAMS):

Mary CHRISTIAN b. 1753 VA m. William BALTHROP 1772 Warren (Bute) Co., NC d. 1837 NC? (William died in Dickson Co., TN)

James CHRISTIAN bp. 23 April 1758 Goochland Co., VA m. Mary CHRISTIAN (dau. of Robert CHRISTIAN and Mary BRADLEY) 6 December 1790 Amherst Co., VA

Gideon CHRISTIAN bp. 16 August 1760 Goochland Co., VA

Ann CHRISTIAN bp. 3 March 1764 Goochland Co., VA m. James DURHAM 26 August 1783 Warren Co., NC

Drury CHRISTIAN bp. 18 August 1766 Goochland Co., VA m. Betsey BREWER about 1790 Warren Co., NC d. before July 1826 Dickson Co., TN

Frances CHRISTIAN b. about 1769 Warren (Bute) Co., NC d. December 1789 Warren Co., NC

William CHRISTIAN b. about 1772 Warren (Bute) Co., NC m. Tabitha HOUSE 8 July 1794 Warren Co., NC d. Madison Co., TN?

Jesse CHRISTIAN b. about 1777 Warren (Bute) Co., NC d. 13 October 1836 Edgefield Co., SC

That’s what I know! I have some info on some of their kids too. Regarding James G. CHRISTIAN, I don’t know who that was. I can’t seem to find a James in my records that approximates that date. But if you come across any of the CHRISTIANS that left North Carolina and headed to Tennessee via Georgia, I’d appreciate hearing about them. Good luck.

Margaret Lillian, a Rutherford Co., Tennessee PACE

I have some information on my family that might be helpful. I am descended from
    a Rutherford Co., Tennessee PACE.

My ancestor is Margaret Lillian PACE. We think that she is the daughter of William PACE, Jr. and Isabella FORTENBERRY mostly by the process of elimination (she cannot be the offspring of any of the other PACEs in Rutherford Co. at the time) but we also have some clues from the names that have been passed down through the family. Through my own and my mother's research as well as family stories we know the following facts:

    1. Margaret Lillian PACE is named thus because my mother's cousin, Margaret Lillian CHRISTIAN, was named after her, though we have found no record of her middle name.

    2. Margaret Lillian PACE was born about 1814-1815 in Rutherford Co., Tennessee.

    3. Margaret PACE (Maggie) married Peyton CHRISTIAN (born 1810 in TN) and they were issued a marriage bond on February 4, 1833 in Rutherford Co., Tennessee. James PACE was the bondsman.

    4. The CHRISTIAN family was living in Rutherford Co. at the time of the 1810 US census but were in Warren Co., TN by the time of the 1820 US census. Peyton must have gone back to Rutherford Co. to marry a family friend or neighbor.

    5. Maggie's eldest daughter, Frances Ann TATE nee CHRISTIAN (born June 24, 1837), named one of her children Isabella (born April 12, 1857).

    6. Maggie PACE named another of her children William Britton CHRISTIAN (born May 18, 1839 in Warren Co., TN) who could have been named after the Brittain PACE that died in 1825 in Rutherford Co. (possibly her brother) and/or perhaps that was the full name of her father.

    7. Peyton CHRISTIAN died about 1869 in the Cumberland Mountains on the border between Warren and Grundy Cos. They had 11 children; one died as a small child.

    8. On August 23, 1871 Margaret PACE CHRISTIAN married Isaac HILL, Sr. On October 16, 1871 Isaac HILL, Sr. died at the age of 73. He is buried at Hill's Creek Cemetery.

    9. Maggie died on January 10, 1901 and was buried January 11, 1901 in Cartwright Cemetery, Warren Co., Tennessee. She was 87 years old and 5 ft. 9 in. tall. The bill for the funeral was rendered to J.T. Hennessee. Her last residence was at Guide in the 5th District.

Another family story is that we have Cherokee Indian blood through Maggie's line. I haven't been able to make a connection though I know some PACEs received land in Arkansas based on claims of Indian blood.

If you want any more information regarding her children, let me know. William Britton CHRISTIAN was my great great grandfather. He took his family to Fountain, Colorado in 1888. I was born and raised in Colorado Springs.

Look forward to helping in any way.

    David,

Yes, I have a Ida Jane listed as a child of Lowra Monroe Merriman. I will give you all I have - this info came from my great aunt who is still living in Bridgeport, AL

William Alan Merriman married Malita Curby and they had the following children:

Lowra Monroe; William; Rufus; Milton Owen; Walter Lewis; Carolyne; Jane and Adeline.

Lowra Monroe Merriman married Martha Ann McGarr and they had the following children:

John Floyd; William Luther (my gg-grandfather); Tom Polk; Charles Richard; Homer Sewell; Annette Loyd; Ida Jane; Lillie Mae; Ethel Lee; Mollie Edna; Mattie Lowra and Josie. ** the date 1873 showes up beside Ida Elliott's name. . . could this be her birth year?

The father of William Alan Merriman was a Demarcus Merriman born about 1760-1770 in Lancaster Co., VA. He died in 1850 in Bledsoe Co. TN. He married Elizabeth (ukn) who was born about 1772 in N. C. So far nothing on Demarcus' parents.

I do have a tidbit on Martha Ann McGarr. . . her father William Issac McGarr came to America from Ireland as a stowaway during the potato famine. He married a Susan Shumake and Martha Ann was born in Pikeville, TN April 1852 and died on Feb. 13, 1925.

I hope this helps you. Debbie

William married Malitia Margaret Kirby on 13 Nov 1823 in Burke County, North Carolina. Malitia (daughter of William W. Kirby, Patriot and Eliza LNU) was born on 15 Apr 1806 in (Surry County) North Carolina; died on 1 Mar 1886 in Bledsoe County, Tennessee. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

A very kind researcher forwarded a will abstract to me some months ago for John Kerby of Burke/Wilkes County, NC. In that will, John names the children of his brother, William, and his sister, Sarah?, as well. Apparently, John and his wife never had children and he left everything to his nieces and nephews. Among his nephews, a boy by the name of Bailey Kerby. A girl, Lettie, is who I am hoping is my Malitia. She would have been Bailey's sister and I know that my Malitia was born around 1806. So it is very probable that Bailey Kerby, the person listed in John Kerby's will, is one in the same. AND IF Bailey is my Malitia's brother, that would make their parents William and Eliza Kerby. Notice, Bailey Kerby named his second daughter Eliza. Just thought I'd share my donated tidbits with you!

Dorothy, do you have anything on a Malitia Margaret Kerby, whose mother was named Eliza. She was born 1806 in the Surry County, NC, area. She married William Merriman in Burke County, NC in the early 1820's. He was from Wilkes County, NC. They moved, with her mother, to Bledsoe County, TN, around 1830. I suppose I'm looking for a will or deed that names her and her father. Thanks!

I have some information on my family that might be helpful. I am descended from a Rutherford Co., Tennessee PACE.

    5. Maggie’s eldest daughter, Frances Ann TATE nee CHRISTIAN (born June 24, 1837), named one of her children Isabella (born April 12, 1857).
